Coral Cities: The World's Most Liveable Cities Visualized
-
As Taylor said, "The varying patterns of urban forms are inherently dictated by their road network; a complex, seemingly organic connection of links moving people across their city. Like branches of coral they have a pattern and a function, I chose to expose this pattern and manipulate it to become something far more conceptual." Coral Cities took 6 months to complete, and Taylor plans to create a series of prints for sale on the project.
Not long ago urban parks were the oasis of cities, and tax payers not only gladly shouldered the weight of their costs, but saw that responsibility as fundamental. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. As municipal budgets tighten, parks are often the first line slashed from city budgets, and funding the maintenance, operations and programming of these public spaces has begun to rely on alternative, often privately generated, means of funding. 1 What then, is the best way for a private organization to manage a public space? In New Orleans, like most other cities nation-wide, public parks have traditionally been the responsibility of the city’s parks department.2 With the immanent opening of the city’s newest green space, The Lafitte Corridor, Friends of the Lafitte Corridor hopes to bring a new partnership to the table; a partnership that benefits the communities surrounding the new park by “working to build, program and promote the Lafitte Greenway as a great public space.”3 Over the past two decades, there has been an increasing social awareness around the value of public parks to cities and urban environments.
Those living in urban environments, both young and old, are beginning to appreciate the contribution of green space to the social fabric and everyday lives of the community, now more than ever. 4 This value can be measured in a number of ways, but specifically through physical and mental health benefits; benefits to children and youth; economic value; reduction of crime; social and cultural unity; and the environmental benefits that can be provided.5 With proper management and maintenance, along with a sufficient allocation of resources, the value and benefits of green space can be recognized across all aspects of community development and wellbeing and can be sustainable for generations to come.6
While the benefits of public parks in urban communities is understood better now more than ever, the funding budgeted by local authorities continues to decrease. This reduction in resources, combined with the expense of maintaining and operating green space is leading to a situation in which more public resources will be needed in the future to resurrect green spaces that have been neglected and, rather than positively contributing to neighborhoods, have instead negatively affected them.7 The challenge is how those local authorities can find innovative and creative ways to fund green space, as different city departments and programs all vie for tighter city budgets.8 The next step for many communities (and one that has gained a foothold in many places across the country) is setting aside the reliance on traditional funding models in favor of more innovative approaches that increase community involvement. 9 The enhancement of the quality of life of everyone surrounding a green space cannot be argued, and it is not up to cities to find ways for community groups and non-profits to help manage and maintain these resources that are vital to the success of neighborhoods.

Maria Pia Bridge is the most significant abandoned landmark in the city of Porto. It was the first major project implemented by French engineer Gustave Eiffel and a definite breakthrough to its Company. The bridge is the result of an international competition held by the Portuguese railroad authority to complete the rail corridor between the two major Portuguese cities – Lisbon and Porto. Eiffel´s winning structure over the Douro River was completed in 1877 and held, at the time of inauguration, the record for the largest arch in the world (spanning 160m). It served continuously for 114 years up until 1991, when it was decommissioned after the completion of the neighboring St. John Bridge.
Though a bridge might appear to be an extreme place to live, there are several urban sites across Europe that testify this kind of spatial occupation. The Maria Pia Bridge is an ideal place for testing new longer-term concepts of international living and working, trying to bind the local and the global communities.
The proposed addition is positioned atop and along the bridge´s platform and oriented toward distant river views. The complex has been designed as a long and continuous body embracing the full scale of the bridge. Conceptually, it aims at creating the impression of an ethereal moving mass across the river, remnant of a steam engine cloud.
A combination of shifting, box-like units breaks up the otherwise plain surface and creates terraces and balconies while diverting stronger winds. The facades’ design is all about transparency, letting the vista be an integral part of the interior and framing views of the extraordinary river setting.
There are 54 housing units of different sizes and structures, varying from studio flats to 3-bedroom apartments. Other typologies may be possible to implement, as there are few structural elements inside the apartments, thus providing extra flexibility of uses.
Making use of both setbacks and voids, each house comes with at least one private balcony, partly connected with the interior, shady and naturally ventilated. The lower levels of each dwelling are reserved for the living/social areas. The top floor is typically reserved for the master suites and rooftop patios. Access to the units is guaranteed through a public gallery on the lower level. This allowed us to define a collective space with secure access that gives space to the social network and generates favorable conditions for maintenance and care.
The entire complex is made primarily in wood to reduce the global weight. A factory-built module is repeated and associated almost endlessly, being at the same time functionally mutable and capable of providing urban conditions through associative forms of its base element. The prefabricated nature of the design allows for a streamlined construction process, resulting in a reduction of building costs and wastage of materials. The lightweight Kerto structures will be easy to dismantle, ensuring the complex has a reversible impact on the existing bridge. It is also intended that the modular design can be easily adapted to other sites.

No leste de Londres, o The Trampery on the Gantry está o aspecto “criativo” da reutilização criativa.

Attracting new developments like ‘World's biggest airport',' World's tallest structure', amusement parks and shopping malls, the message is clear: If you dream about it, Dubai has an answer for it.
But, the million-dollar question in many of our minds is: How much of this development benefits the common person? Has the city's architecture evolved and responded to the needs and aspirations of the masses? Is it socially responsive? We can start by defining precisely what constitutes a socially responsive environment.
Socially responsive architecture evolves as a direct reflection of the life patterns of its inhabitants, reflecting the collective will of the society. Architecture should employ sustainable design to address client goals and user needs while responding to the surrounding community.
Architecture that serves a community; addresses inequities in society; and responds to climatic, cultural and environmental conditions can be considered socially responsive.
Densification has also led to the disappearance of open green spaces and community parks; empty spaces of land are, all too often, grabbed up by greedy developers looking to build on every inch of land available.
