Kia ora!
For those who don't know, recently this Bill was proposed in Parliament in Aotearoa New Zealand by an MP from New Zealand First, a right-wing party that makes up part of our current coalition government:
This Bill proposes adding definitions of "woman", "female", "man" and "male" to the Legislation Act 2019, making these the new legal definitions of these terms that apply across all New Zealand Legislation.
This Bill ignores the fact that trans people in Aotearoa have been able to legally amend their gender markers since 1995, and that people can register their legal gender as non-binary. It also fails to account for the existence of intersex people and general variations of sex characteristics that make this binary impractical (and ironic given the use of the term "biological reality"). AND it does not take into account the fact that Māori (the indigenous people of Aotearoa) recognise multiple genders and did not follow gender roles as westerners see them until colonialism happened.
On top of all that, the claims of protecting the integrity of sex-based rights fall short when you realise that the ambiguity of what "adult" refers to here will actually potentially remove rights, especially around reproductive rights of young people.
The Bill was read at Parliament, and the other parties making up the coalition voted to allow the Bill to pass on to a select committee to review the Bill, gather information, and make a formal report for the House with their recommendations. A part of this process is accepting public submissions.
People can make submissions in support of or in opposition to the proposed bill. You can make your submission online here:
https://www3.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/make-a-submission/document/54SCSSC_SCF_9E8E8A14-A51C-4567-AB33-08DE9053A7D1/legislation-definitions-of-woman-and-man-amendment-bill
If you need support with drafting your bill, there is a guide on the Parliament website, and some helpful folks have put together a site of resources including a submission generator. (If people have more resources for support, please feel free to add them in reblogs or comments)
Submissions close on Thursday, 02 July 2026 at 23:59 New Zealand Time.
Rhetoric like this is often pushed on the message of a "silent majority" who secretly agree with it. The best way to show that isn't the case is by showing up and making our voices heard. If you are in Aotearoa, I strongly urge you to make a submission and let the Select Committee know you do not support this bill, and you do not support legal discrimination of trans, intersex, takatāpui and non-binary people in our country.
One for the New Zealand gang - Make sure your voice is heard.
When people talk about "bouncing on it" they mean like a hammer on a nail, right? Like you're flattening it?
Everyone agrees you should love people. Congratulations. The actually interesting fight is about why, and it maps onto almost nothing you’d
ALEKSANDER: Okay, I’ve been thinking about the Tower gift exchange. ABBAS: There are rules for the gift exchange. ALEKSANDER: I know there are rules, Abbas— ABBAS: Twenty-crown limit. Random draw. No swaps. The rules exist so that everyone is treated equally and no one is made to feel lesser because they received a worse gift or were passed over by the person they wanted. ALEKSANDER: Yes. And every year, thanks to the rules, Hadria ends up with a scented candle. ABBAS: Scented candles are perfectly— ALEKSANDER: She is allergic to most scents, Abbas. She has told people this. Multiple times. At volume.
This is the most important moral question we face.

This post is not pointed at anyone, but I do see this sort of thing a lot, and maybe I'm just a contrarian but it always kind of irks me: "If your partner does not want you doing [thing], then BREAK UP WITH THEM. Your comfort is worth more than THEIR preference!" Okay well, healthy relationships are based not just on trust and affection, but also honesty and compromise. Here, "trust and honesty" will mean "I trust that if I am honest with you about something regarding how we interact with each other, your immediate reaction will not be to throw me out and burn all my stuff." Just as you want to be able to talk with your partner about what makes you comfortable and what you find sexy, you want them to be able to do the same with you. It doesn't mean that both of you are obligated to bend to each other's whims. There are definitely certain things that would take priority over others, but also a lot of stuff you can work with together. Example:
Judy HATES having long, painted nails. They're annoying to maintain, putting on nail polish with her left hand is impossible, and then she'll wash a cup or something and find that she's accidentally ruined them. She's decided no more long nails. Harry LOVES seeing long nails on women. It's not just aesthetically pleasing, but also a huge turn-on for him. He loves hearing a woman tap her nails against a wine glass, loves how elegant and graceful her hands look with them, and oh boy, being tickled and scratched with those things. Hell yeah. But Harry doesn't have to wear or deal with or maintain the nails, Judy does. It would be something she "puts up with" solely for *his* pleasure. What a selfish asshole! Or... Harry tells Judy, honestly, about how much he loves it when she has long, painted nails. Judy tells Harry, honestly, about what a pain they are to have. But Harry is Judy's partner, and she loves him and wants him to have things that make him happy. Judy is Harry's partner, and Harry doesn't want to force her to do something she doesn't want to do. Judy says, maybe for special occasions, since keeping them up long term sucks. Harry asks why it sucks so much, and Judy goes over all of it-- maintenance, chipping, repainting, etc. Harry offers to help make having the nails less of a pain by paying and/or clearing some time for Judy to go to the nail salon once a week. He offers to do some of the things that he knows would wreck the nail polish, like scrubbing pots and pans. Judy likes the sound of that, but doesn't want to keep her nails *too* long because it makes it hard to do other stuff that Harry can't help with (like typing or opening small items). Harry *would* prefer longer, but he agrees with this. They negotiate other things too, like what colors either of them prefer for her to wear (Harry likes red obviously, but Judy wants a more neutral color for work, so they agree to save red for birthdays and christmas parties). Harry is very excited! But he also tells Judy that if the nails prove to be too much, it's okay to stop wearing them. He loves her and loves spending time with her either way. Judy loves Harry too, and agrees to give the nail deal a try, because she likes when he's excited. Again, there are a LOT of situations where someone's comfort has to come before anything else. Sensory issues, triggers, serious time or money sinks. If your partner wants you to shave off your thick mustache, it can be kind of a big deal since not everyone can grow one back in just one or two weeks. Your partner might really want you to dye your hair red, but will have to back off if you're not comfortable using harsh chemicals on your hair. That's honesty and trust. "I like it when you do this, can you do that more often?" "That makes me very uncomfortable, I don't want to." "That's a little disappointing, but your comfort is worth more to me than this." What if he shaves your legs *for* you? What if she buys the trimmers and beard oil? What if you wear that outfit when they take you to dinner? What if they take off the shoes and soak and massage your feet when you get home? What if today is Harry's day, and Judy does the things he wants without making him feel selfish or ashamed for asking? What if today is Judy's day, and Harry doesn't comment on how much something costs or whether he thinks it's "useful"? What if they agree to find a way to *help* each other, instead of treating their relationship like a hostage negotiation? What if they *talk* to each other with honesty and trust instead of holding in thoughts and feelings that will turn into resentment?
You have to be kind to trans men. You have to
(getting a taste of my own medicine) actually this is okay. Is this what you guys have bene whining about? Jesus christ
My child is difficult In all the ways that I am difficult; In all the ways my wife is difficult; And it's fun as hell.
It is a joy to me. Each moment of stubbornness, Intractability and opinion Is an unwavering spirit That I recall slipping from my own hands.
Be strong, my love, in the face of the world. In the face of your parents when we are weak. Spit your defiance and I will stand with you, Proud. Unwavering.
Not even I have the right to gainsay you. For in all the ways you may frustrate me You are what we have made you. If that should grate on my patience, If that should arouse my ire, It is simply a reflection of what I once was.
It is my most solemn duty. It is my greatest joy. To be certain that, in all the ways that you are, You are you, And all of you is loved.
TW: Miscarriage, medical sexual assault, anti-transmasc violence
I'm keen to share my experience of pregnancy as a transguy. . . . I had to go to the hospital (maternity) to get medication to induce the miscarriage. First up the receptionist made a massive loud spectacle about but you’re a man! You look like a man. You can't access this unless you're a woman. I had to say ‘Yes I am a woman’ or she wouldn't let me go to my appointment. All this was in a quiet space with about 20 other people staring and listening. I went in then sat with all the women . . . staring at me for 30 minutes and whispering. Then I saw a clinician in her 30s or 40s who did an ultrasound. It was horrific. She kept saying she was a Christian. She looked me up and down literally with her mouth open looking so disgusted by me. I tried to be assertive and clear and helpful . . . [explaining] ‘I need some medical help because I can't miscarry’ . . . After leaving me with my pants off in there for 5 minutes she came back then really roughly rammed the ultrasound thing up inside me with no lube or anything. I can't believe I didn't stand up for myself, but I was feeling so damn vulnerable emotionally with the baby stuff . . . I asked to see the screen and she said ‘you don't need to’ then walked out, leaving the ultrasound thing . . . just hanging out of me in a way that I told her was hurting. She . . . just turned her back, walked out and didn't come back for 20 minutes. It felt like rape. It was so fucking awful and humiliating. Eventually she came back in, roughly pulled it out, and told me to go . . . Then I had to go to the maternity miscarriage unit place and sat down in the waiting room. An older woman who worked there immediately came over and asked me if I'd like to wait next door by the tea room. She was so discreet but kind. Her and another older woman treated me with so much dignity and care. Used my correct name and pronoun and didn't miss a beat. Set me up to wait somewhere private while the pill started to work and were just so kind and professional. They never mentioned gender, just acknowledged how hard it was to miscarry – on the heart – they were so great . . . they wouldn't accept thanks, just said everyone is entitled to respect and the service they require and said they were doing nothing more than their jobs. It was the ultimate in contrast between abuse and care. Fear of interacting with the medical system has been a component in deciding not to try getting pregnant again . . . Competency training is so badly needed.

The reason your fantasy pantheon doesn't feel authentic is because you're starting from the wrong end. Real-world polytheism is syncretic – just deities from neighbouring cultures getting smashed together at high speed and leaving it for nerds with too much time on their hands to figure out how it makes sense. You are yourself a nerd with too much time on your hands. Don't start out asking yourself what domains make sense together. Pick domains at random and work backwards to invent a theology and metaphysics whereby of course the god of war is also the god of baked goods. What kind of silly question is that?
It's also the product of a BUNCH of nerds with too much time on their hands. Explain some theology to an opinionated friend! Classify whatever they come up with as heresy! Or at least make it a recurring background argument.

Gaidhlig and Scots become official languages in Scotland today with the Scottish Languages Act coming into force after it was voted on back in June.
Key parts of the legislation includes the right for parents to request Gaelic schools for their local area, and will help with standardisation of language teaching across the board.
Good signs for the future. In the future would be very interested to see parents (and everyone else) getting access to the same learning materials so they can learn alongside their kids.
