new handle, new focus!
hey everyone! Most of the content I share here will be Wheel of Time gifs (either my own or others), but I realized having my account be exclusively gif-focused was cramping my style a little bit, especially since most of my contributions to the fan community so far have been recaps I wrote for The Mary Sue. I'd also like to write the occasional fanfic, promote fanart, etc. But if you look at my post history that's what I've been doing anyway, I'm just admitting that my tumblr is just my twitter, but longer lol.

Wheel of Time Screentime, s1e1-2-3
I recently shared the screentime breakdown of the first three episodes of the Wheel of Time (see e1, e2, e3 for details). As those episodes were all released on the same day, many of the initial reviews of the show were based on the combination of these episodes (the only exception being from critics who got to see the first 6 episodes early).
So I thought it would be interesting to look at the screentime breakdown for those first three hours of the show, and potentially to look back at some of the comments people had on the show.
This is a very dense graph, but it contains all of the characters named on IMDb for those episodes. Most of those characters have very minor roles: half of them don’t go above 4min of screentime. Some of those characters were only seen for the first episode (maybe we will see them again in a later season), while others got briefly introduced in episode 3, to them be developed in later episodes.
Here’s the same graph, but restricted to our 8 main characters. While Rand hasn’t been the top character of any episode so far, he was 2nd to Egwene in ep1 and ep2, and 2nd to Mat in ep3. That consistency pushed him to the top of our list, with Mat 6min behind and Egwene 9min. Perrin is a bit further from Rand, with 18min less screentime than him. We then see our Aes Sedai/Warder duo, 23min and 29min behind Rand. Nynaeve is far after the others, which makes sense, as she was mostly absent in episode 2.
While the first episode of the show was well balanced in term of men/women screentime distribution, the second and third episodes were not (which is not a critic, as this was perfectly understandable considering the context of those episodes). As a result, screentime is shared between women and men at 40% women to 60% men, which isn’t too far from the distribution between men and women in our main cast: 3 women for 4 men actually gives a 42% women / 57% men division.
Which leads to my next point. when the first three episodes of the Wheel of Time came out, many comments and critics followed, some from book-purists and non-book-purists. Some of those notes were along:
Moiraine takes too much space.
The show focuses too much on Egwene as a potential dragon.
The younger folks of the Two Rivers don’t get any development.
[spoilery] We don’t pay enough attention to the Dragon Reborn.
To which I will share the following percentage chart and ask: “Or did we?”
As always, here’s a link to check all those numbers directly. Thank you for reading, I hope this was interesting!
Facts, not feelings.
I thought we’d have more time. We always think that. Don’t we? One day we will. In this life or the next.
I want some emotional White Ajah. I do not care what is in the books, philosophers can also be wild fuckers.
I want some Brown Ajah and White Ajah who are the college professor academic types. Sure some are uptight and straight stoics. Others are just feral nerds. A Brown Ajah and a White Ajah have been feuding about an obscure theory, through research papers and screaming matches in the halls, for at least 100 years. They are also a couple.

A Brief Overview of the Ajahs
One of the long-term entertainments of WOT fandom is deciding which Ajah you’d be in (long before Hogwarts Houses were a glint in anybody’s eye) so, for the benefit of new show people, here is a brief summary of the seven Ajahs Aes Sedai can belong to, sans any other plot or character spoilers. However I guess by definition these are worldbuilding spoilers since we haven’t heard of all of them in the show yet. (This is, in case it’s not obvious, somewhat satirical but I hope not inaccurate in terms of ~vibes~.)Â
Keep reading
I spent *months* researching the various Ajahs so I could come up with an accurate-as-possible personality quiz and I heartily concur with OP.
My quiz is based on 7-10 separate and distinctive values and traits for each ajah, yet requires no "book knowledge" to take. If you've seen up through episode 4 of the show, you know enough.
You are an initiate of the White Tower, about to become an Aes Sedai. Which Ajah should you choose?
It’s hilarious though because people clearly think that Siuan hates Moiraine and Siuan can’t lie so I’m just imagining Siuan around the White Tower just making horny comments about Moiraine that sound like threats like “if Moiraine were here right now she wouldn’t be able to leave my sight until I gave her something to scream about”
I HATE THIS SHOW because I can't stop imagining Birgitte finding little kids who accidentally stumbled into Tel'aran'rhiod and protecting them until they leave and maybe occasionally one lingers a little too long and talks to her and she's like "ok I already broke the rule about interfering so I might as well talk to this kid" and so there are kids just all over the place that think Birgitte Silverbow protects them while they sleep because she does and I'M CRYING FUCK YOU RAFE
