Interviewer: So we have AJ here with us to give an exclusive on her first EP. **Alyssa smiles awkwardly as she looked from the female interviewer to the camera before waving and looking back** Alyssa Jessica started as an idol in the music industry, but after her exit from that scene in December of 2016, her presence in the underground has been more than welcomed. In high contrast to her pop group’s fresh pop and youthful image, AJ’s album is compiled of neo-soul, r&b, lo-fi hip-hop, and jazz inspired jams.

Alyssa: Yeah. **Alyssa nods her head, and the interviewer laughed prompting her to say more with her hands** Yes, it is called Émotif, and it is available on Naver Music for download. **she added laughing at herself.** This is going to be awkward because I’ve never done an interview unscripted. 

Interviewer: Well, I’m glad to be the first. **laughter between the two**

Alyssa: **she hums softly** Cherries is the sweetest. **Alyssa covers her mouth.** Can I say that? Oh my. Cut that out.

Interviewer: Well... Today we were hoping we could do a question speed round with you, but I’m scared now that you will get our video demonized with your perverseness. **points question cards**

Alyssa: **smiles down** I’m a really gross person, but I will try to be chill.

Interviewer: Alright What is the reason you released your album as an independent artist? What are the biggest differences from K-Pop to the underground? Is there anything you miss?

Alyssa: My reason for moving out of the idol scene to indie is because I wanted to have freedom over fame. I was not at a bad label or anything, but that is a process to create packaged goods. I wanted to have more control, and that is the biggest difference. *she told smiling before she sighed* I miss my girls. At labels, you can’t really make friends until debut because we are competitors, but once we did, we were sisters. We fought hard to get there and we had to work together to get farther. I miss practicing late nights and comforting each other.

Interviewer: Your album is a pretty different sound for even the underground. Who and what are your influences?

Alyssa: My parents. I was adopted by two music producers heavy into the business. Even more so, my parents come from a different ethnicity than me, so I had a lot of exposure to music out of my heritage. Still, taking Korean education courses until I moved to Korea and being a ballet student and going to an art school all were big influences on my style and sound. I wish I could give you names, but everything has inspired me. There is not a thing in my life that hasn’t really influenced my sound. **she nods satisfied with her answer**

Interviewer: The album is very sexual. Are there any ties to that in your real life? How do you feel about sexuality portrayal in Korea versus the US where you're from?

Alyssa: **she laughs loud then covers her mouth** This is a rude question. I feel like you’re trying to get me in trouble, but of course, there are ties to it in my real life. Women, even Korean women, have sex and a sexual drive. I think no matter where you go, you will find sexist separation on how men are praised for their sexuality while women are not supposed to have one, and I don’t think all people in Korea do it. I just honestly hate when people tell me I am not “Korean” because of that. I was born to Korean parents in Korea. I speak the language and know my ancestors’ history. I am Korean, and I like sex. **she told nodding**

Interviewer: Are you single? What does it take to date a girl like yourself?

Alyssa: **she cringes slightly** Well, I am single, but I’m not really trying to be in a relationship right now because I want to focus on the music. I guess if you're really longing to, be interesting. I love in depth talks and weird people. I don’t honestly have a type, but if you aren’t authentic, I’m good.  

Interviewer: Are there any underground artists you are longing to collab with?

Alyssa: There are, but I will say no names because they haven’t earned it. **she told doing a finger gun at the camera** Honestly, though, I’d love to work with Jooyoung after his enlistment, Sam Kim, Dean, Crush, BeWhy, Jay Park, Reddy, Kisum, Jessi, and so many more. There are so many talented people.

Interviewer: What are your goals for the future? What do you think are your biggest hurdles and strengths?

Alyssa: I want to make music I’m happy with it, and be happy with that. I don’t care about selling out stadiums anymore, but that would be nice. **she laughs** I would say the biggest hurdle is myself. I need to keep confidence in myself and doing what I want, and a big strength I have is my support system. I love my friends and family.

Interviewer: And I would get in trouble if I didn’t ask, so I have to. Are the rumors true? Is this album about someone?

Alyssa: **she frowns and looks to the camera directly** She lied to me and said she wouldn’t ask before I got here. **gets up and walks to the camera until she was so close it was just black.**

ÉMOTIF was released April 8th, 2017 from the former K-Idol, and has already created buzz in both the mainstream and underground. With her, at times raunchy lyrics and new sexy style, many fans and anti-fans are sharing their opinions of the now indie artist.

Tracklist

이해 - Starts album showcasing the sultry tones of the liberated artists. The song is a flirty tune alluding to her sexual desires.

My Ocean - Showing off her neo-soul/jazz-infused sound, she talks about escaping with someone into paradise.

오리온자리 세 별 - Sex appeal reaches another level on this song. She continues to show she is an artist not afraid to dive into sex appeal.

Learn - Being completely under someone’s spell can be a tragedy when things break. She pleads in this song for herself to move on or for him to take her back.

Anything - She ends on her expression of self-collection. It contrasts the rest of the album where she seems to be talking about finding herself with others or trying to validate others. In the end, she seemed to find her own self-worth.

“Somewhere nice, but not overly nice. Like a house in Mapo that was renovated in the last five years,” she told a smile growing on her face. “A place that if I were to have a family, we could live happily with love,” she admitted further. “Cliche, right?” Alyssa questioned.

“I pretty much paint my face until I’m a different person, and think of where and what to give said person,” Alyssa noted. “I hate the type of girls who expect their partner to do everything. Plan things, be romantic, and keep things alive. I want to give what I get or more. If someone takes me out, I want to take them out too,” she informed. “I plan that and also makeup.”

He finally spoke up, the silent man. It wasn’t that the other talked to much, perhaps it was just that he was interested in the way she spoke to defend herself. Defend. What was there to defend again? No, share. She shared a piece of her life, and oddly enough, it piqued his interest. He was always up for a nice story, anyway. Standing firmly, the male soon realized that he had completely let go of his camera to listen, after having looked down at the device which had its strap around his neck. In that split second he couldn’t help but chuckle to himself, reaching up to scratch at the back of his neck in disbelief. He was completely pulled away from his quiet activity.

“Leci n'est pas une pipe. That was my first Magritte.” With his hands once again surrounding his camera, he took a step closer towards the female and looked around idly, not really in search for anything, just attempting to muster up whatever else he was going to say. Too much. Far too much. He struggled within those very few seconds, but it all fell into place the very moment his gaze fell on her, again. “You don’t ramble, it’s fine – I have students who are far more talkative like yourself. However, I do apologize for perhaps sounding.. I don’t know.. uptight, at first? Is that even the right word.”Another chuckle. Realist. “I, too, have experienced that sort of feeling.. Giggly, and hopeful. I guess they are quite similar to the feeling you experience when you “fall in love” at first sight, but they’re not quite the same thing. To me, love at first sight isn’t shallow. It just doesn’t exist at all.”

To seal his response, he donned a little smile and even bowed his head, the gesture out of utmost respect as he realized they hadn’t even exchanged names yet. It made him feel as if he was being outright rude. “My name is Taewon, though, miss. Camera man is fine but I prefer my name.”

Alyssa felt the pit in her stomach grow as he spoke to her. Every word made her hyperaware of what she had done. She made herself a character in his story. Whether she was reoccurring or only in this moment, she ruined this moment for herself. She longed to be absent, unreal.

This caused her expression to change. Her body to straighten, and her gaze to falter as Alyssa tried to string her words together like she longed to. She realized this awkwardness in herself, and she smiled looking back to the male. Was she acting again? She seemed to mirror him too well in this time frame. Ah, no there she was. The self-doubt reminded her of herself. 

So she was found. This was certain, and this made her almost tired. Relaxing her posture, she shrugged. “I like the way you speak as well,” she told him her position shifting from the cars to the river. She stretched out her hands and made a frame looking for a moment that didn’t exist in the dying day. “Some would think you doubt yourself with your pauses, but I think you come to a lot of realizations in your head before you speak. It makes me want to trust what you say more,” Alyssa went into depth. 

“I like you, Kyusoonim. I bet your students don’t like you, though,” she told him with a gentle smile to his direction and the indication she did not see them on the same wavelength of her to call him his name just yet. “You seem too hesitant and uptight, and maybe that is unfair to say. You have said so much to me, a stranger, but I have that affect on people, really,” Alyssa revealed speaking to herself and him. 

Sighing, her thoughts seemed to channel to one thing now. “I want to make you fall in love at first sight. With moments, with people, with things,” Alyssa informed softly looking to his camera now. “I’m... confused on what to tell you of my name as I have many,” she expressed still locked on the device. “AJ, Alyssa Jessica, Alyssa, Jess, Al, Ally, Tiger, that Asian girl, that bitch, Princess Peach.... and Ara,” she told her eyes looking to his now.
