this ai byler fic incident happening multiple times with incredibly popular byler fic feels like a lesson in trying to make a fic canon, a way of thinking that feels incredibly dismissive to fics that do not have that type of popularity in the fandom.
people read 'the big 3' and then think the fandom is dying. it's not!!! there are thousandssss of well written fics real people put their heart and soul and time and effort into, and this whole 'byler fic canon' and 'big 3' mindset is so silly. ESPECIALLY when incidents like this happen because now one of the big 3 fics is *allegedly* written by ai.
thereโs nothing wrong with celebrating an author or enjoying a fic with other people. community is what keeps fandom alive! but we have to spread that enthusiasm, rather than concentrating it onto a select few works.
use the tag system. stop treating ao3 as an algorithm. give a chance to smaller fics and build community. fandom won't feel so dead when you do so!
I find it really funny how every single person collectively decided that Kaz would be the brightest, bubbliest, "I'm a goddamn ray of sunshine" bastard to ever live if Jordie hadn't died.

i really really enjoyed it!! Itโs a very quick read, i read 3/4 of it in about 40 minutes and finished the rest off in 20-30 mins??, the illustrations are beautiful, and i really like how each character has different handwriting

itโs a fic writerโs goldmine - good moments with incredible fic potential but i am particularly hyped about the exceptionally detailed map of ketterdam which is also imo a lot easier to decipher. finally i can get them accurately moving around ketterdam in my fics ๐ฅณ๐ฅณ

also jes and inej being worried about kaz and inej asking jes to keep an eye on him- if i wasnt in a train carriage i would have been making some insane noises of utter delight this was adorable

and also the idea of kaz, jes, and wy working on the sheet music together, it makes me happy that theyre spending time together, even if kaz was writing a code for inej

kaz being insane as usual, the reveal that he IS emiel kroon?!?!?! and that he was essentially poisoning himself to do it??!?!?! like bro i shouldve seen this coming but im always blindsided by kaz's plans and also kaz WHY must you constantly do things that are bad for you, he's just fucking insane (affectionate)
"we're all slowly dying, i'm just doing it in style" he's still a drama queen (but also did this make anyone else a little sad?)

also the banter between the two investigators genuinely had me giggling (on the inside tho bc i was on the train)
marx's reveal at the end was very cool. i love the concept that the whole book is made of lost documents that he buried to keep kaz from spilling all his dirty secrets.
i was very happy to open up the little packet at the end and find inej's pirate flag inside. also the cards and the coin and the sticker are very cool. i have commitment issues and have no idea where i will put the sticker.
my main criticism is i wanted MORE lmao i could actually read about the crows doing the most mundane things ever and not be bored
no limb payment necessary i am MOREEE than happy to yap about this book its so so so goodโฆ little spoilers, proper spoilers or no spoilers version???
in their letters, they discuss the concept of happiness, in which inej tells kaz that she thinks sheโs happy being out at sea but she doesnโt always know, and what does it mean to be happy anyway? kaz responds in typical kaz fashion, poking fun at her for being so philosophical, but also he tells her that he bought a farm, where two boys he once knew used to play in the apple orchid. he says that one day she might come to this farm with him, and that they might be beautiful with the right light and company
kaz sits down and forces jesper to notate wylanโs sheet music before he sends a copy to inej, so that he can write a secret code only she can understand
not strictly just a kanej one, but jesper tells inej that kaz hasnt been well and is insisting heโs fine, and inej tells him to keep an eye on him because he wonโt ask for help until itโs too late.
Inej is worried that kaz isnโt telling her everything, and teasingly jabs at him for withholding information from her thatโs worrying him, because it worries her that heโs worried
Inej misses sitting on Kazโs window sill and feeding the crows
She also misses listening to the scratch of Kazโs pen

Theyโre badass together and team up to kill slavers

absolutely stunning kanej illustration. im not sure if its post the book or like them imagining being reunited but the art in this book is gorgeous.
