It was a silent night. And Asher Sweetly was taking advantage of it.

Right now, they were in the HFPD (Hatchetfield Police Department) building. They had easy access to the inside–mainly because their dad who's a cop wasn't too watchful of his keys.

Asher looked through countless documents and files. Grabbing a pen, they began their tedious work. Forging signatures, writing information in the wrong places... Just the usual for them.

So they really weren't expecting some guy to be there. Especially with a gun loaded and aimed.

It was some low-stake mission. Something to occupy his time that had no real time urgency, something on the back burner of his mind. A simple mission, even an amateur could do.

Get some files, get out.

Simple.

So the sight of someone else had his gun trained immediately and rightly held. A wrench in the plan, but something Curt didn’t turn away. He liked when a plan had a bit of.. Fun. An added risk.

“Who are you?” He questioned.

Asher quickly set down their pen, raising their hands in the air. They had to at least act scared, even if a gun pointed to them wasn't all that serious to them.

"What, are you some kind of cop?" They asked, tilting their head. "Officer Bailey-?" They squinted. They couldn't exactly see that well in the dark of the building. Should've brought a flashlight, they thought.

“Who?” Curt raised an eyebrow. He wasn’t familiar with the people in this town. Not that he cared. He wasn’t going to linger long. He stepped closer, gun still pointed.

“Look, just step away from the desk. I’ve got a few things to grab and I’ll be right out of your hair. I don’t even care what you’re doing.” His eyes briefly flicker around the room, trying to figure out where his own damn files would be.

Asher shook their head. "These files have to be tampered with. I'm the only one who can get away with it," they spoke in a hushed tone, their hand reaching for a small pistol on the desk behind them.

"This is important."

Curt shoots, but not at Asher. It’s aimed to where their hand had been heading. A warning shot.

“And I won’t stop you completely. You can do it once I’m out of here with what I want. So either move and comply, or you’ll be having some bullet holes in your body real soon. What’s the choice you taking, kid?”

"..."

Asher barely flinched at the gunshot.

Their hand grabbed the pistol, shooting at the glass near the front door, making it shatter. Quickly, they grabbed the files and ran. This wasn't the first time they were chased, anyway.

Curt didn’t flinch or run, rather aiming at Asher again. With a steady hand, he aims and shoots twice. Nothing fatal, but aimed for the back of their legs.

He now moved, swiftly running after them to catch up.

Asher quickly jumped. Typical. Everyone always aimed for their legs.

They ran up the stairs to the second floor, hiding underneath a desk in the far corner, one that almost nobody looked under.

Worth a shot. Curt tucked the gun away, continuing to follow. The stairs are fine, he’s physically fit so he gets through them with ease. Once on the second floor, he glanced around. He didn’t need the kid, so he doesn’t bother looking for them.

He began his way back down, to where the files he actually needed were.

Asher hid under the desk, listening for the man's footsteps. When the coast was clear, they climbed out.

Heh, punk. They took all the files. Including the ones the spy needed.

Quickly, Asher hurried to the third floor.

Descending down the stairs, he’s returning to the original room. Moving around to peek at some of the desk drawers, then some of the filing cabinets.. He managed to find a few, but not all of it. His eyes stare down at the now small amount of manilla folders he held. He knew it wasn’t everything, after all.

He went to give the room a double check. Just in case he missed them.

From the third floor, Asher grabbed a lighter. This should destroy the files for good, they thought.

They began to ascend to the rooftop, documents tightly crumpled in their hand as they sprinted up the stairs.

Eventually, they made it to the top of the building. It was smaller than the other structures in Hatchetfield, but it'd do.

Slowly, Asher held the files over the flame from the lighter, ready to drop the contents below once the papers caught fire.

Curt’s finishing up his search of the place, eyes blinking at the lack of files. He held the ones he could find, close to his chest. He then made his way back to the stairwell.. When he sees the kid holding a now-burning fire up on third floor. By the stairwell.

“Hey!”

He exclaimed, now running up the stairs once more.

Asher looked behind them. Shit.

"Don't try to stop this, man," they exclaimed. "What I'm doing is better than whatever mission you have to achieve."

They held the lighter in a firmer grip, slowly lowering the papers to the flame.

“You’ll burn down the damn place!” Curt exclaimed once more. He couldn’t care if the files ended up not in his hands, if it meant the place didn’t burn down. His ass would be handed to him if that went horribly. It was supposed to be simple!

And he didn’t want to shoot the guy again. It didn’t work before.

"No. I'm just gonna burn the files. Then I'll get outta your fur," Asher held the pages higher in the air along with the lighter below it.

"This is the only way I can be free. Free from- whatever they wanna do with me!"

“What’s your issues?” Curt finally got up the top of the stairs, breathless. He didn’t stop running, going straight for the guy.

What he did next was.. Not his usual.

He lunged for Asher, attempting to tackle the guy.

Asher quickly dodged, though they nearly tripped over their laces in the process.

"You don't get it, man-! This police department is corrupt!" They huffed, moving farther from the spy. "My dad's one of them–a cop. He wants to forcefully take me. He's using his excuse as an officer to do that!"

Asher held up the files again. "These documents? They contain all the information to twist his words so he can get me! I don't want to stay with him, he's awful!"

“I need those, idiot! Just don’t burn them!” Curt replied, scrambling to get back up and look competent again. “I was going to take them and just— Rid of them. I guess. You’d never see them again. I promise.” He offered.

Well, his agency needed them. Not like they’d return them to this little police station anyway.

“But— Jesus, yeah. I get it. Cops suck. Easier to do the work yourself sometimes.”

Asher hesitated, gripping the files a bit tighter. "Why would you want to destroy them yourself when I can do so right now?" They asked, squinting. "What's your deal, anyway? Your occupation? Are you some sort of American Spy, or something-?"

“Because I need them for something first!” Curt interrupted. “I need to do something with them first and then I’ll rid of them, okay?” He sighed.

He wasn’t going to reveal his occupation. That’d be stupid. “I’m not a cop. If I was a cop, I’d be in uniform and shooting you more. It’d be terrible! I’ve only attempted to shoot you once!”

"So you're probably a spy then," Asher pointed to the man. "I'm glad you're not Officer Bailey."

They held the documents to their chest. "Are you gonna use all this information against me?" They questioned.

“I’m not a spy. For all you know I could be a private investigator.” He didn’t even know why the kid was so insistent. Curt didn’t even say anything close that could imply he’s a spy!.. That he’s noticed. “And who is this Officer Bailey guy, anyway?”

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’m not using the information against you. I don’t plan to.”

Asher squinted. "And for all I know you could be lying," they muttered. "I'm pretty sure I've seen you in the papers before."

"Bailey is this jerk of an officer. Always throwing things all over the place, always aggressive..." They sighed. "I do not like it when I'm chased by him. Besides Neil."

They paused, looking down at the documents still in their grasp. "...Don't tell my dad about this, ok?" They whispered. Their voice was serious, but also held a sense of... Fear, maybe?
