The investments that made us, the investment we owe to those yet to be
Everything that came before you read this has shaped you. Dwell on that for a second and feel the weight that comes with it. It gets heavier. You were not the only one being changed, molded. Lives innumerable are intertwined to your own in ways few even think of. Your apartment exists because in 1912 a group erected it using the skills and experiences of their past. The coffee you are sipping, helped pay for the barista who served it stay off the street. It is the height of hubris, of ignorance to believe our life is so special that it exists outside of the time we belong to. That our actions do not impact the world around us. There are few who truly hold such hubris and ignorance to believe they are above it all. Most of us though exhibit it in much smaller ways. That one cigarette you flicked out your car window is not hurting anything, anyone. Treating the latest drought, wildfire, or flood sweeping an area as just some everyday event. I mean we are only human.
I am so tired of us hiding behind the “we are only human” argument. I refuse to believe that our humanity is a curse and is something to use as an excuse, a crutch for our actions. Humans are capable of so much more. We have to be. I can think of nothing that would cause more despair than living in a world where humanity can not rise above the darkness surrounding it and bring forth new light, new hope. Hope is not a fantasy but is made true through action. Our actions now will determine the future, if any, the generations to come will be born into.
Will we seeing being “only human” as our curse or as our challenge?
