ย ย ย Itโs been over a month that Henry and herself have been captive within Hawkins Lab. After several failed escape attempts โalong with multiple beatings and electrocutions โ Nancy is tired.ย
ย ย ย Itโs not a feeling she lets Henry see; heโs struggling enough, what with being chipped again, not to mention being back here โ and itโs her fault, so the very least she can do is put on a brave face.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Even if sheโs terrified.
ย ย ย This is the second time sheโs come across this woman, and while their conversation had been brief and somewhat bleak, Nancy was grateful for the small bit of assistance. Sheโs not in the mood for harsh realities today, though โ Nancyโs skin burns from being hit too hard, and the longer they stay here, the more of Henry she sees disappear.ย
โ Itโs not only about escaping. โ She doesnโt know how much the other knows about Henry, or about any of the children here, but it doesnโt seem as though this woman is privy to all of the doctorโs intentions. โ If we only escape, heโll just come after us again. โย No, escaping alone isnโt an option โ they need to remove Henryโs chip, and Nancy knows he wonโt leave until this place is in ashes.ย
ย ย ย Even so, she does have a plan; and though itโs one that makes her stomach churn, it may very well be the only shot she has at catching one of the guardโs mistakes. Nancyโs memorized the schedules by now โ she knows the man who looks at her too long will be in the infirmary later tonight, and if she makes herself known during that time โ well. Whatever happens will happen, but sheโs hoping a scalpel or some kind of tool can be procured.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย And then theyโll be free, and Henry wonโt keep disappearing.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย I just wish I could save you.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย You have, in every meaningful way a human being can save another.
โ โI donโt get it, you know; how you can work here with these people, how you can help them. โ Itโs perhaps too bold, and Henry certainly wouldnโt approve of her antagonizing any of Brennerโs staff, but the words hold no malice.ย
ย ย ย With her back slumped against the wall, Nancy lets her misted eyes close โ itโs a brief reprieve from pain even to just sit and exist on the floor without being dragged around, gawked at, tortured, or made to watch Henry suffer. And the woman doesnโt seem to pose a threat to her โ at least, not at the moment, and this is what prompts Nancyโs next words:
ย โ You just donโt seem like a terrible person; not like everyone else Iโve met here. โ
ย ย ย โ Depends who you ask, โย May replies.ย She wonโt pretend to be a good person, but at least she can say that sheโs not actively trying to hurt people.ย The rules of the street donโt translate to this sleepy little town;ย in Hawkins, she can afford to relax somewhat.ย No turf wars.ย No bombs being launched through her windows.ย No seedy men sitting on the balcony across from hers, just waiting for her to fall asleep.ย โ If you keep trying to fit people into โgoodโ and โbadโ boxes, youโre going to wind up hurt. โ
Part of her snippiness is because of who she is.ย Sheโs been raised to not take shit lying down.ย People can only intimidate her if she lets them.ย Part of it is because Nancy seems to know a lot about her boss that she herself doesnโt, and the niggling sensation in her brain ever since she shook the doctorโs hand has only grown worse since they crossed paths.ย Doctor Brenner has always made something in her prickle, like a hedgehog on the defensive, but sheโs convinced herself that heโs harmless.ย Heโs a little intense when it comes to the workload, but hell, she supposes sheโd be intense if she gave a fuck about the Russians too.
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Sorry, Doc.ย Iโve got people in my own country to smoke out.ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย I donโt have time to worry about guys who wear fur hats of their own volition.
May folds her arms tight across her chest, one hand fiddling with a loose thread on her sleeve.
ย ย ย ย ย ย โ โฆ I donโt know anything about what happens here, โย she admits, voice now hushed.ย Sheโs outspoken, has been described as crass by far too many, but she knows when itโs time to lower her voice.ย โ I noticed that a lot of people who work hereโฆย they donโt leave.ย Itโs like they live here.ย Like theyโre dumb little drones in lab coats.ย It gives me the creeps.ย But Iโm not one of them. โ
And as long as she has a choice in the matterโย which, as far as sheโs concerned, will be always, for sheโd sooner kill a man than bow to himโย itโll stay that way.
ย ย ย ย ย ย โ I just translate things.ย Messages.ย From another country. โย Careful. ย โ Itโsโฆย like doing assignments at school.ย I just tell him what they say, and then I leave.ย Thatโs all there is to it. โย The look she gives Nancy is vaguely disapproving.ย โ You think Iโm hanging around these hoighty-toity PHD-having-fucks for fun?ย Shit isnโt free.ย I need cash.ย This place delivers.ย It beats what I used to do. โ
Or at least, she tells herself that it does.ย The similarities between her and her now-dead father are staggering, and as long as she can do something to steer her destiny, she wants that gap between them to keep increasing.ย Being a street assassin with her brother-in-arms may sound like an exciting life, but thereโs a reason she packed up and left.ย There has to be something else she can offer the world.ย She may not have finished school, but she knows all that she needs to and then some;ย what she doesnโt understand in mathematics and science, she makes up for with intensity and street smarts.ย A second, valuable language, too.
ย ย ย โ Itโs this or live on the streets. ย I donโt have any family to turn to, and no friends that would be able to help me, because theyโre as poor as I am. ย What else could I do? โ
