i don’t understand this. the term transsexual predates transmeds pretty significantly, and even when used by transmeds it’s not used as a slur. i understand not wanting to use this term for yourself, that’s fine, but labeling it a transmed slur seems a bit ahistorical.

And, for those cases, had incredibly stringent criteria for dysphoria. We still don’t have access to HRT. I am my doctor’s first HRT patient. I am 37 years old. Planned Parenthood exists here but does not prescribe or dispense HRT. There is one gender clinic for all of Ontario, in Toronto. Trans healthcare in Canada is closer to what the UK has than what the US has.
If you’re from a place where GAS has always been accessible and not gatekept, then I can see why you might not find the term offensive. But please don’t suggest others are stupid (that is what you say when you suggest I am ignorant of history) for speaking on their truth
I don't really want to touch on either side of the "transsexual is a slur" discourse with a ten foot poll, except to say that I have met trans people older than me who use it as an identity, trans people younger than me who use it as an identity, and people in both camps (majority, even) who are explicitly not transmed. If someone makes it clear to me that they only identify with being trans in the sense that it is something they feel is strictly medical for them, that is their business and as long as they aren't using it as a means of lateral violence against other trans and nonbinary people, I don't really get to tell them that their identity is somehow incorrect; I get enough of that pointed in my direction when I tell people I am queer, and would really like to just...not be hypocritical.
What I actually wanted to respond to is your assertion that there is a single gender clinic for all of Ontario, located in Toronto. I do not know where in Ontario you live, OP, but I am 38 and am closer to Ottawa than Toronto. Ottawa has Rainbow Health, and I know they prescribe HRT, but that's all I know because there are other ways to get HRT in Ontario.
The route I took was talking to my GP, who then gave me a referral to a trans-specific endocrinologist in Ottawa. Once there, I believe I had the option to do informed consent, but personally opted for the psychologist assessment and gender dysphoria diagnosis so that I could wave a paper at any family members who wanted to insist that I was confused or doing this for attention.
Once I had that diagnosis, I made a new appointment with my Endocrinologist and she had me sign the informed consent papers, had a talk with me and then sent me downstairs to fill my first T prescription so I could bring it and everything else I'd need back upstairs so a nurse could walk me through giving myself subq shots. From that point onwards, it was a matter of getting the correct dosage, and now I see my endo once a year to go over a blood test.
It's for sure a big province, and I absolutely understand if you are nowhere near Ottawa, either. But you do have options. I was also my GP's first trans patient, and after a conversation with her she told me that it's pretty standard that doctors across Canada refer to Rainbow Heath's freely available literature and that if your GP does not feel qualified to prescribe you testosterone or monitor your levels for you, standard practice is always referral to someone who is comfortable and qualified to manage this for you.
If both you and your doctor are unsure of who fills those roles in your city or township, you might have some luck asking around in city specific reddit groups for names of endocrinologists who have experience with trans people and are taking new patients, and then its just a matter of handing off the name of the endo and their practice's phone number and/or address and then your doctor can get you a referral from there.
I went through this process over the course of 2015. My first appointment with my endo was in February, and I started HRT in December. I understand that wait times can be longer now, because there is such a huge demand for these services and not enough people to fulfill them, but there should be avenues for you to persue, and the wait times for those are in no way comparable to what's going on in the UK right now. It is better here, and it is better in Ontario specifically than it is in most places in the US, too.
I have been in this system for approaching 8 years now, and I get that it can really feel like you have no options if you're not sure where to start looking. It shouldn't be this hard. It absolutely should be easier to access, and there should be more easily available avenues to that access, as well. But we are nowhere near as bad off as the UK, we are nowhere near bad off as some other provinces in the country that we do live in, and we are no where near as bad off as an increasing number of states (or really, any of them considering that most of our care in Ontario is or can be covered by OHIP and isn't something that we need to go into medical debt to access), and it feels weirdly disingenuous to let the statement that we are nearly as far up shit creek as our trans siblings across the pond sit out there in the open as fact when it is demonstrably untrue.
I am not attacking you! I am legitimately confused about where you are getting this, and am honestly concerned that your doctor might be keeping you from resources you should have access to either through ignorance, unwillingness to follow up on information that is new to them or because they want to actively discourage you or prevent you from accessing these resources. I hope literally anything I have said above helps you get to where you want to be re: accessing HRT in Ontario faster!
Sharing this because these are important points about accessing HRT in Ontario! It’s great to hear it’s better out there than some of our experiences are in Toronto
I am not surprised by what you said about Rainbow Health… here in Toronto it’s CAMH’s gender clinic that does those consults for GPs. This system is still unsustainable, more doctors need to be trained in trans health care and be confident in providing it… we just get the runaround forever and end up getting referred to other services that aren’t set up to help and may even harm like psychiatry

Land snail mating behaviour is quite complex, featuring courting dances, three or more -somes, and half-siblings born in the same clutch of eggs.
We leave this kind of speculation in Namekians to fanfic authors, but suffice to say that Namekians’ earthen relatives are anything but asexual.
According to Dragon Ball Z mangaka Akira Toriyama, Piccolo’s species is gender-nonconforming.
(cn: both older and contemporary translations feature the slur ‘hermaphrodite’ to describe Namekians, where intersex/nonbinary/trans masc would be better fitting words)
The “strange method of reproduction” is that they lay eggs out of their mouths. This recalls snails, whose mating apparatuses and ovipositers are located on their ‘necks’. So, a snail in the act of laying eggs might appear to be ‘spitting out’ the eggs.
Many other invertebrates and non-mammalians reproduce via eggs or other methods besides pregnancy and live birth.
It doesn’t make these animals ‘asexual’.
Fertilized egg clutches can be laid after mating with another conspecific adult snail and/or when the snail is alone/in captivity, using sperm stored from a previous mating.

The idea that Piccolo (and all Namekians) are ‘asexual’ is grounded in the patriarchal, homophobic and cissexist idea that conflates gender identity with sexual orientation: thus, the only valid type of “sex” is between cishet men and women and involves the possibility of fertilization and pregnancy.
This doesn’t exclude the possibility that Piccolo or any other individual Namekian’s might identify as asexual/aromantic.
It’s also compatible with canon, which explains that in recent Dragon Ball history, only select Namekians have been tasked with birthing eggs (Grand Elder Guru, Moori):
It is arguable based on canon that Piccolo himself may be ace-aro.
But, we have no reason to believe all Namekians share the same sexual orientation as Piccolo. This is like cissexism/cisheterosexism among humans.
Sexual orientation ≠ gender identity!
So, now that we’ve established that sexual orientation and gender identity are separate things, we can describe Piccolo’s orientation as ace-aro, gay, queer etc., and identify his gender as gender-nonconforming, trans masc, intersex or any other terms that recognize his presentation and self-identity as masculine or male.

We support this reasoning. We also object to the terms’ use in dialectic settings (discourse) as we don’t believe it is our place to police whether any other person is “transmisogyny exempt”:

As Serano points out, TMA/TME are too frequently invoked in place of ASAB (these invocations generalize everyone not deemed ‘TMA’/“affected”) and are used to erase, render invisible, and silence the voices of trans people classified as “exempt”
We would like to add that like Serano, we see a utility for the terms in the context of theory, for example in a piece that explores the experiences of a specific trans femme compared to a specific butch trans guy. In any other context than this, the terms do more harm than good.
Okay but can we not forget the lead up to this particular tweet too? Because she’s being transandrophobic as shit still, claiming trans men have privilege over trans women because we *check notes* are bothered by our lack of visibility within and without trans circles and are “embracing the F in AFAB to emphasize their marginalized status...”
... you know Serano, maybe if people took trans men and their issues seriously, some trans men wouldn’t be trying to highlight their AGAB to remind everyone they get hurt too! But nope, we’re evil men who are inherently privileged over the poor trans woman.
And Serano continues, as do many other people, the demonization and harm trans men face at TERF and anti-trans hands. Just because it’s quieter doesn’t mean it’s not there.
I am...really curious where all these trans men are who are saying this. Like, I know B*ck Angel and the dudes who signed his shitty little letter have said that but... I've not actually *seen* any other trans men actually *say* that the hypervisibility that transfemmes have is privilege. I am not saying there are none but ???
The other part of this is that 'transmasc' doesn't mean 'trans men'. transmasculine people include non-binary, bigender, genderfluid, and other multi-gender people whose identities do contain that F. Mine doesn't, but many do.
And as @thequeer-quill said, if people would actually listen to us about our experiences rather than insisting that we all have "male privilege" and are never affected by misogyny, we wouldn't have to keep repeating "seriously, though, people still treat us like women, we still are affected by institutional misogyny and interpersonal misogyny," over and over.
This is what has been throwing me too.
I keep seeing it stated that there are transmascs (including within the transandrophobia movement) saying things like, 'trans women have male privilege' and 'the hypervisibility transfems have is a privilege'.
But I've not come across a single example of it so far beyond Buck Angel and his shit crew. Again, that doesn't mean that it's not happening. I'm just not sure where. The people within the transandrophobia discourse that I follow have been very adamant and careful to explicitly state that trans women do not have male privilege and neither hypervisibility nor invisibility are privileges.

More than once I've seen someone who says their issue is with the term transandrophobia specifically cite transmisandry as a better option so why oh don't trans men & mascs (& allies but we don't talk about them) use that instead? And I'm always fucking flabbergasted because I remember people using transmisandry literally about 10 years ago and getting the exact same kind of backlash. Like. Who do you think you're kidding? You'd have the exact same issue with transmisandry, and we know that bc in the not too distant past plenty of people did. You just want trans men & mascs to shut up.
