Using a Late 2012 i5 Mac Mini in 2019
Not to bore you guys to death but recently went on a destroy all my debt vendeta lol. Sold both my 2019 iMac an 2018 i9 MacBook pro and all my camera equipment and promised my self to not buy anything major until my debt is completely done. I still need a computer to do minor things and my iPad Pro just does not fill my necessity to sit in front of a desk and big monitor. In a jam I didn't realize how fast my iMac and MacBook would sell on eBay, So I bought a 32 inch on deal on amazon for $179 and decided to hook it up to my Mac Mini late 2012 i5 with yes only 2 cores.... I had to finish editing pictures for my last clients and I was just down right impressed this 7 year old weak Mac Mini handled it self. it wasn't blazing fast but with the SSD I had in it and the 16 GB RAM it did the trick and I managed to edit a batch of photos on LightRoom and photoshop with this Mac Mini. I can confidently say anybody looking to get into a mac on the cheap and you already have a good monitor get your self a late 2012 i7 Quad Core it will be more than capable to get things done as I used to own one of those back then.
64GB RAM upgrade for my 2019 i5 iMac 3.7 6 Core!!
Purchased 2X 32GB RAM kits from amazonÂ
After upgrading my RAM at first almost had a heart attack iMac would not boot up but after simply removing the new RAM and replacing it making sure everything was firm and steady everything booted right up!
Using my main applicationsÂ
Chrome
Lightroom
PhotoshopÂ
Final Cut Pro XÂ
My iMac is a dream! not missing my 2018 i9 MacBook Pro one bit!!
This iMac is a work horse and with the price amazon has it right now it is simply a steal!!! If you canât wait like me, go to your nearest Best Buy with the amazon ad and they will price match it! I recommend this pre configured iMac all day long for all creative content producers will not disappoint!
Trying windows after being a long time Mac OSX user
I've been an iOS and Mac OS user for a long time!! Here is a quick back story to why I gave windows another chance.
I am a photographer and will be traveling to shoot so I purchased a 1TB iPad pro to off load my images safely from my SD cards. Only draw backs are that even though the iPad has Lightroom it does not have full Photoshop yet so there are some edits I cannot complete while on the go. And while iPad OS has still not been released iOS 12 cannot transfer videos from my SD card as I shoot with a Sony A7RII and the way Sony saves videos is simply ugly lol.
Those 2 reasons hindering me for this coming up trip I thought I would look into these 2 in 1 windows offers as I can flip it into a tablet making it a small foot print and much more comfortable to carry around.
I found a sick deal on a HP X360 2018 i7 8565U 4K display 16GB RAM 512 GB NVME SSD storage which is easily upgradable for $1,250 at Best buy so I said why not give it a shot a MacBook similarly specd would be around $2200 and without the comfortability of flipping it into a tablet. I went ahead and bought it!
Went home cracked it open had a really nice design and color it was blue and gold with a diamond cut design chasis. Very interesting and expensive looking for a Windows laptop I was very impressed. Things were looking pretty good so far.
After hours and I mean hours of setting it up updating it and updating the drivers and the OS I was finally able to load up Lightroom and Photoshop and give it a whirl.
First thing I noticed the track pad was absolute garbage! Wow this thing was bad it would speed up jerk around jump around just a terrible terrible experience but ok I said no big deal I could use the touch screen.
Well coming from an iPad the touch screen was a disaster as well! Applications are just not optimized for touchscreen use especially Adobe apps which is the only thing I would be using on this machine.
Not being beaten yet I pushed on and used the laptop to download my images from the cloud and get to some editing.
Just opening Lightroom would cause this laptop to kick the fans up to full blast and boy this thing was loud and obnoxious.
That wouldn't have bothered me much but now while using it the OS ran horribly it was jerky jiterry nothing was smooth and seamless like on my Mac!
I was shocked that at this price point I was having such a horrible experience!!
Everything ran slow and laggy on such good hardware. I just cannot figure it out and so many reviews rated this laptop as a great product.
At this point I have to wonder who buys these products? Because it was an overall bad experience I don't see anybody enjoying this experience at any capacity!!
Final verdict windows 10 well on this machine at least was an absolute no go! Will be sticking to Mac! If you use a windows laptop what are your uses and how do you enjoy your experience? Have you ever used a Mac?
Separating Fusion Drive
WARNING THIS IS A LENGTHY PROCESS IN THE EXTREME RARE CASE THAT THINGS GO WRONG I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE BROUGHT ONTO YOUR SYSTEM BY THIS DO THIS AT YOUR OWN CAUTION!
This was done on a 2019 i5 3.7 6 core iMac with 2TB fusion drive
Things you will need
-Back up everything as we will be deleting your drives!Â
-16GB USB 3 or USB C thumb drive I used this one
-External SSD I used this one (optional but highly recommend)Â
-Wired mouse and keyboard (very Important)
-Patience as this can take some time!Â
Insert USB DriveÂ
Proceed to the app store and download Mojave it will take some time to download as it is a big file.Â
after it is downloaded proceed to this website and download the disk maker
After DMG file is downloaded open and place application in applications folderÂ
after opening application open and allow security questions until arriving to this window and select âuse this copyâ
select option as followsÂ
your USB should be listed if not format it to HFS+ in Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and it should appearÂ
press install and follow all directions as followed it does take time so be patient enter your password when requested
after the install grab that wired mouse and keyboard plug them in and restart your mac
while your mac screen goes black press and hold the option key (alt in a windows keyboard)Â
you should see your main drive and a install Majove drive select that one and wait for your iMac to boot into installer (will take some time be patient progress bar will be full and restart that is normal!)Â
once in recovery mode select utilities in the top left as on imageÂ
in terminal type inÂ
diskutil apfs list
Look in the outer containers and look for âfusion Driveâ Mine will not show it because I have already deleted it but you will see it on your screen make note of what disk your fusion drive is mine was disk2 so in the command line I put as follows
diskutil apfs deletecontainer disk2
and press enter it will delete the fusion and separate your drives into 2 separate drives you may now quit terminal and open the disk utility and format your drives the (SSD should be APFS and the mechanical hard drive should be HFS plus) as in following imagesÂ
make sure all options are the same as in these images!!!!Â
once done reformatting drives quit disk utility and install Mojave
this will take a pretty long time your mac will restart a few times and the progress bar will restart it self a few times completely normal just be patient and that is it now you are using your mac with the fast SSD which will be night and day difference. I do suggest using the external SSD as storage or even as your home folder click here for instructions how to do that.Â
Do not use the mechanical drive as your home folder as it is very slow if you decide not to purchase the SSD which i strongly suggest you do use the mechanical drive as a regular external drive for files and such.Â
I hope I have been able to help you get the best out of your new mac this was done on a 2019 i5 3.7 iMac I cannot speak for other macs and the size of their SSDâs and again as stated before I am not liable for any damages that might come to your system for doing this do at your own caution!!

Replaced my 2018 i9 MacBook with the 2019 3.7 i5 iMac Best decision I could have made!!!
If you received your iMac and hate how slow it is Do not Return it! split your Fusion Drive!! this will release the fast NVME 128GB storage this iMac has and will allow you to install the OS on that fast drive and use an External SSD as your Fast storage or assign your home folder to that drive like I did and this thing will be blazing!!! you can also use the 2TB HDD as storage but i wouldn't recommend to use it as your home folder as it is slow. I upgraded to this iMac from an i9 2018 6 core MacBook pro! yes that may sound crazy but this computer actually outperforms it all day and that is simply because my MacBook would never surpass 2.7 GHZ because of thermal throttling!! my MacBook would hit 100C all day which is absolutely horrible. This thing sits at 4.2 GHZ with out breaking a sweat 50-60C all day long. this thing runs circles around my 2018 i9 MacBook Pro. Anybody considering this upgrade go for it!!!!
