Closes his eyes.
"Hmm."
"Are you alright? You look spaced out, please be careful at the traffic here..."
One Kazuya Minegishi has finally arrived home, and the first thing he does after stepping off the train isâ
â⌠accidentally fall asleep while waiting for the next bus to his apartmentâs general area.
Oops.
Should that guy be sleeping there at the bus station? She just saw one drive off that could have been his. Tentatively she reached out to shake his shoulder gently.
"Uh, hey...I...think you just missed your bus. ....hey, please wake up..." With a nervous chuckle she added. "...please don't be dead."
"Whoâd have guessed you could pull such a face?â
"Ah- Hibiki-san!"
"âŚnot a word, please." He caught her in a situation she hoped he wouldnât see. It embarrassed herself, buts he couldnât help doing such a face. But now it was too late, he saw and all she could hope was it wouldnât make him think poorly of her. "Please donât judge me."

Occult pals | A-ya & A-no
For that he wasnât expecting. In the same apartment that he lived in for a while, in a different room was a girl who could get curious at the things that A-ya loved. A-ya can remember her at least, from the moment when he got his hedgehog, the girl who wanted to pet Yui and stuff. At first he wouldnât say that the girl liked or would get interested in those kind of things, since she fawned over his hedgehog and seemed like those girls who just fawned over everything that was cuteâŚ
But anyways. Luck got stuck on A-ya and that was the time to get the chance to do something fun. Fun for A-ya wasnât something which everyone thinks it is for A-ya. For him, itâs different. Doing scary rituals that could take your life always? Fun. Summoning a spirit? Fun. Thatâs A-yaâs sense of fun, everyone.
He stared at the girl, a small curve in the corner of his mouth.
"Really didnât expect curiosity on these things coming from youâŚ" He gave a pause. "Whatâd get you curious into these things?"
The reason A-no has been walking around gathering information and reading mystical, mythological and urban legend books as they were available in Toshi City was because of investigation and research reasons. She didn't pay much attention to her surrounding that day, though and the least one she though she would run into was her former house mate from a different apartment, A-ya, the guy with the cute hedgehog , who loved to talk about the occult and strange, creepy rumors.
...actually, he was the ideal guy to ask but he and his friends moved into a villa sometime ago, so she lost contact with him.Not that they had much to begin with but maybe it was time to change that.
"Oh, long time no see, A-ya.kun." His eyes were more on the book she held than on her and she chuckled. "Oh, this? You know, I am a member in Theater Arts, the drama club of Toshi's high school and I'm helping out with the plot and the script. The theme is occult and urban legends..." She almost grinned because she could see A-ya's ears perking up and his eyes sparkling. "And since I don't mind research work and AM a little curious about this field, here I am. Is it so surprising?"
The boy hadn't changed ever since the four friends had left Peony Apartment. He still had messy black hair and bags under his reddish eyes but all of this combined had some cute charm. The same cute charm her favorite cell phone mascot had.
"Hey, do you have any nice rumor or legend on Toshi City? I think a local mystery that isn't just about the mayor and doves but a bit creepier would be interesting for the play's plot..."
"Ahh they have a Sushi bar? Iâd love to go there! Maybe we can go there and walk along the coastline? Itâs a nice day after all!"
Ittoki loved the beach scenery. It was one of his favourite places to be on a warm day! He loved the feel of the soft sand beneath his feet, the sound of the crashing of the waves on the shore, the smell of the salty sea, everything was just great! It was even great to play some volleyball!
"Then let's go! It's more fun exploring the city with a friend than on your own, in my opinion. I think we need to take a little ride with the bus to the coast, though..." They walked a moment to the next bus stop that would lead them to the beach and luckily it would only take a few more minutes until the next scheduled bus arrived.
"How about we first head to the sushi bar, eat there, then have a little walk down the beach and through the walkway there to digest. And get ice cream on our way back? Ahh, the bus..." They boarded the bus that was semi-filled. It was time for people to get off work, after all, more people than just the two of them must have gotten the idea to have a nice evening out at the beach on such a nice day.
"Ahh I am quiet hungry already. According to the map, the sushi bar should be just 5 minutes of walk from the bus stop...woah, look at the nice view at the ocean, Otoya-san...!"
All those compliments A-no was throwing at Hibiki were unexpected, but they were appreciated nevertheless. Hibiki was just happy they managed to solve the riddle in the end. That was one less thing to keep him out of his sleep.
"Ah, thanks. Iâm glad you think it was fun too. And donât apologize. That we didnât get it right at our first try wasnât your fault alone. Weâre both to blame for that tiny mistake. Everyone makes mistakes, at least we learned from ours."
Hibiki had now learned to not let his own excitement get the better of him, alright. Always think with a clear head when itâs about something important.Â
"Do you like the stuffed animal? You can have it if you would like. If Iâm going to hug an animal I would rather have the real thing and Iâve got my pat rabbit for that," he joked, then suddenly remembering said pat rabbit had been alone at home for quite some time now.
"Oh, shit. Whatâs the time? I just rememberedâŚÂ Err, lets exchange numbers real quick. I would like to hang out again in the future as well, but Iâve got to go."
A-no looked at the plush animal and smiled.
"Well...it's cute, it surely would get along with my collection of cute plush animals, and if you are sure...a pet rabbit? Sounds cute-" She was a bit startled when a rush of hurry and anxiety seemed to rush over the boy and he whipped out his cell phone in light speed.
She pulled out hers and indeed, they spent more time on this riddle than they realized. She also had to do some grocery shopping before the convenient stores closed.
"Right, here is my number..." It was on record time they exchanged numbers and Hibiki rushed off quickly afterwards. A-no looked at the boy's retreating back, only now realizing that his jacket had two long fluttering...somethings that could very well resemble bunny ears.
"See you, Hibiki-san..." she said, well-aware that he couldn't hear her anymore but her mind was stuck on how she couldn't unthink Hibiki as bunny anymore.
Ah well. She smiled and petted her new plush animal. A snake wasn't everyone's cup of tea but A-no thought snakes were pretty cool, perfect in her collection of cute (read: strange) plush animals.

To say Hibiki hadnât expected any of that was⌠an understatement. He was aware this particular phone booth was known for being odd and mysterious, but this was something else.
When the music finally died down and he could hear himself think again, he flipped his notebook open again and leaned against one of the windows as the same slight frown from before appeared on his face.
"Looks like we got it wrong," he said, smiling apologetic to A-no before returning his gaze to his notes again, "Is there something we missed? I felt like we were on the right track. What did we do wrong?"
"OhâŚ" Suddenly, the penny dropped. âThe last digit should be a 4 instead of a 5âŚâ
They must have been so enthusiastic about solving the mystery that they accidentally miscounted the last digit. Such a tiny mistake and at the very end as well. It was like backing bread without salt.Â
"This correct phone number is 2244180184. Iâve got some change on me. Would you like to try calling again? If so, would you mind if I did the talking? Thereâs something I want to say to our Mayor. Give him a taste of his own medicine, if you will."
When you dial the number, the line makes a few beeping noises until you hear a click. Could it beâ?
You hear a masked voice.
"Moshi moshi, Mayor desu! You finally solved the mystery, oh how delighted I am! How great! But you werenât the first. How unfortunate!"
A slot of the phone pops out, making a lot of items fall out. Oh boy, what is this! Upon investigation, you find the following items;
Leftover confetti
The stuffed animal from earlier
A pile of amethysts, each engraved with the letter [N].
Some glitter
Congratulations on solving the mystery!
A-no picked up the amethysts, unsure what to do with those, ignoring the glitter and the confetti, before lifting the stuffed animal pet snake.
"That was quite a ride," she laughed. "Sorry, if only I had paid more attention, we might have been the first to solve it. You have done an amazing job, Hibiki-san and it was lots of fun trying to solve this riddle with you. Ehh...what...do we do with this stuffed animal, thought? The dove said it's for the both of us but we aren't sharing an apartment room, nor an apartment..."
"But...now that this riddle is over, I'd love to hang out with you just like that. And become friends, you know? If you don't mind, I mean."
"Mhmm! Ahh, theyâre always doing something like that to me! They get really excited everytime they see me and always show me new drawings or something theyâve made or done and it makes me happy to see them being so creative! I know theyâre all gonna be great when theyâre older! A-Ah you think Iâm kind?"
Ittoki blinked and blushed, rubbing the back of his head in embarrassment. What a nice comment!
"T-Thank you! Youâre really nice yourself, A-no chan! Iâm glad weâre friends! Ah, I had nothing planned.. how about we go somewhere cool?"
"Ehehe," A-no chuckled, happy the compliment made Otoya happy. "Thank you, too." Friends...yes, they were friends now and she was glad she had people she could call friends now.
"Somewhere cool, hm? What do you have in mind? We could eat some ice cream, it's pretty hot. Or Toshi has some nice cafe, I heard. Or a walk to the Cafe Walkway near the coast. Uhm..." A-no was using her cell-phone to check out Toshi City's location. "A sushi bar sounds nice, too..."
"I leave the decision up to you. Since I haven't done much of any of these, I practically am up to everything this town has to offer."
"Sorry, sorry, I'm back. It's time to resume interacting with my friends tomorrow, I will go to bed now. See you soon!"
Hibiki nodded at A-noâs reply. Without doubt the phone booth had something to do with it. This had to be the right location.Â
"Ah, well⌠I think what weâre looking for is a phone number. âEverything starts from zeroââ Couldnât that be the first digit? And then thereâs the last sentence of the riddle⌠Why would they start each word with a capital letter?â
Just for this occasion, Hibiki had taken a tiny notebook and a pen with him. He took them out of his pocket and flipped the notebook open on an empty page. With a light frown on his face, he started to write something down.Â
"Would you have a look at this. If we take just the capital letters from the last sentence we get WEESASE, but seeing as weâre looking for a phone number⌠wouldnât it make sense to count the letter from the alphabet? A is one, B is two, C is three and so onâŚ"
After a moment of counting together, A-no and Hibiki got the number: 2355191195. For good measure they added the zero they had gotten from the first part of the riddle in front of the number, but they then faced a problem.Â
"No good. The number has one digit too much. Iâm sure weâve got to do something with that zero, though⌠What could it be?"
They thought about it for quite some time. They even started counting from Z to A to see if they then would end up with a phone number of 10 digits, but it was to no avail. However, suddenly the solution came to them.Â
"Of course! Weâve got to start counting from zero! In that case weâve got⌠2244180185. Thatâs has to be it A-no! We did it," Hibiki cheered, happy they had somehow found a solution, "Now the only thing left to do is the call the number, I guess. Would you like to make the call or should I? Weâve got no idea whose phone number this is. Kinda creepy now that I think about it."
A-no didn't do much, it was Hibiki that did the most explaining, she just executed what he found out to solve the riddle. "That's makes tremendous much sense, so...!" They counted and made sure they were right but with the additional zero, it was indeed too much digits. But trust Hibiki to realize what could fix it. She just watched in awe as things slowly started to fall into place.
She was amused, though. His eyes seemed to glow as his brain worked smoothly from one problem to the next. He was excited but at the same time calm and collected, which was why he could work out the problem so smoothly.
"We really have a number now...I have small change right here, let's call the number together? Especially because it is kinda creepy, who knows what will answer us, let's call together!" Since they were both teenagers and didn't take up much space, anyway, they fit both into the phone booth. Admitted, it was a bit tighter than comfortable for a boy and girl who just met but this wasn't about comfort, it was about solving the mystery. With shaking hands A-no took off the receiver, leaving Hibiki to input the number they figured out.
And then they both pressed their ears against the receiver, hearing the first dial sound. What could they expect? Were they right? Were they wrong? What would follow now?
"Oh, no I didnât take it as offense!"
"I donât mind it here! Though itâs kind of weird with all the strange things going on.. sometimes it leaves me through sleepless nights and then my sleeping pattern gets mixed up! But I assist the nursery downtown now! I was raised in an orphanage and I really enjoyed looking after the kids there! Yeah, Iâve already graduated! Is today your day off?"
"A nursery, huh...?" A-no looked at the tall redhead and tilted her head with a smile. "Imagining Otoya-san with kids hanging off him is really cute. You grew up in an orphanage, huh? I assume it was a nice childhood there despite all, because you decided to help other orphans now? You're really kind!"
"But yeah, I really wonder what is up with the gate and the mysteries these days. The city is so excited. I am sure the kids want to go exploring, too? I know I would have if I was still in my childhood."
She looked at some citizens running around with letters, avidly, excitedly discussing with each other. A fluttering above them startled her and she looked up to see doves passing the sky. "The doves sure are excited, too...ah, anyway, what did you want to do again, Otoya-san? I don't want to keep you from doing what you planned to do in the city, after all! It is my day off, yeah, which is why I am kind of lazying around as you can see..." She laughed sheepishly.

Hibiki gaze turned from the letter in his hand to the young girl next to him upon being addressed by said young girl. He looked over her to try and recall if they had met before, but seeing as he couldnât remember her face and she had introduced herself the very moment she had approached him, it was very likely this was their first time meeting. In that case, there was only one thing he could do.
"Nice meeting you, A-no. My name is Hibiki Kuze, but you can just call me Hibiki if you would like," he introduced himself, a hint of a smile touching his lips, "And youâre right. Iâm also trying to solve this amethyst mystery, but so far itâs not making all that much sense to me. It seems like there are more parts to the riddle. We could see if maybe we can combine what we have."
Hibiki moved so that he was standing next to A-no and held his letter next to hers. At a glance he saw how the two pieces of the riddle fitted together.Â
[1] Return to your calling! The place where privacy is pretend Everything starts from zeroâ
[2] The alphabet wasnât heaven-sent. With Every Eventual Sunset, Another Story Ends.
"Hmm⌠Itâs something, alright. I can tell Iâm going to break my head over this. Any thoughts on it?"
A-no was glad she managed to find someone nice. His blue eyes were so clear that she was sure he had a nice head on his shoulder, too. ...unlike her, who looked at the now combined riddle and had to smile sheepishly.
"Well, I must be honest with you, right now, I am still confused. The 'calling' part sure sounds like it is connected to a phone booth..." She looked at it because Hibiki had been looking at it, so she assumed it was part of the hints of this riddle (and if she checked the Toshi Board later, she would see that it indeed was). "A pretended privacy could also be a phone booth, but maybe a hotel as well? What does it have to do with an alphabet, though...? And what or where do stories end whenever a day passes? Maybe I don't think broad and abstract enough. But...you look like you have some kind of idea. Let's hear it!"
Hibiki hadnât gotten to having a look at the mysterious riddles going around yet, but today was different as he had some time to spare. He folded his piece of the (supposedly) newest riddle open to reread it as he wandered around Toshi City.Â
"Return to your calling. The place where privacy is pretend. Everything starts from zeroâŚâ he read out loud, perhaps hoping the words would make more sense to him if he could hear them, âThe riddle starts with a one, so I guess there are more parts to it.â
The question was how he was going to find the other piece of the riddle. He couldnât really go around asking every random stranger if they knew something about this, so he better go somewhere where his chance of running into people participating in this game (because thatâs what it was, he had realized) was bigger.Â
"If I had to go somewhere I would say I would have to go to⌠the Phone Booth. âReturn to your calling.â That has to be a hint, right?â
And as such Hibiki made his way to the Phone Booth.Â
Since the other mystery didn't make much sense to A-no yet, she decided to try her luck on the next, whose letter had arrived by now.
"The alphabet wasn't heaven-sent...with every eventual sunset...another story ends...," she murmured, walking through the streets. That didn't make that much sense to her.
She noticed the dark-haired boy only in the passing, standing by a strange phone booth. Strange, because it was about the only existing phone booth of this city, as far as A-no could tell. And he was holding a piece of paper, looking thoughtful. What if...?
"Uh, hey...my name is A-no. Are you perhaps...also trying to solve the amethyst mystery that came in today? My part alone doesn't make so much sense...maybe we can join forces...?" She willingly showed him her letter because, who knew, maybe they could work together despite not knowing each other.
