randomly thinking about an alternate s4 where steve witnesses the first vecna victim, not eddie
after the game he goes home with a girl named chrissy carver, jason's older sister, back from college on spring break and desperate to get out of her house so she can stop drowning in her mother's voice for the night. when she's killed, steve runs not because he's afraid, but because he knows this has to be connected to the upside down, and so he goes to get robin and nancy instead
nancy still goes to investigate with fred, she just knows a little bit more about what happened now. jason still rallies his friends to hunt down steve, who has been branded as an outsider because he hangs out with those kids, and also because of his association with robin, and jason has heard more than one rumor that she's gay
steve doesn't go to the library or to pennhurst with robin and nancy because he has to lay low. lucas still tags along with jason and co until he finds an opportunity to bolt and warn the others. max is still marked as a victim, and steve is losing his mind all day long driving her around town, trying to protect her while also trying not to get caught
steve isn't there when they gear up at the warzone, and jason confronts robin instead--until nancy steps between them and gets him to back off
out in the field before they head into the upside down, robin just keeps thinking about how she has no idea how they'll clear steve's name, even if they win. she tells steve that she has this terrible feeling it's not going to work out this time
they split into pairs in the upside down, steve and dustin dealing with the bats while robin and nancy go to the creel house. it's a parallel of the junkyard scene in season 2. he's insane. he's awesome.
steve dies protecting dustin and giving robin and nancy enough time to attack vecna. robin comes back to dustin crying over his body. nancy barely manages to get all of them out of the upside down safely
in season 5, dustin works at the radio station with robin, and they never fail to keep things running smoothly, but they struggle to so much as look at each other. jonathan and nancy's relationship is still a mess because jonathan saw how affected nancy was by steve's death, and he feels like he's competing with a ghost. nancy is dealing with the weight of the world, planning crawls and keeping robin's head above water and dealing with jonathan and then having her family torn apart
but then robin spends time with will, and she's able to be this safe space for him the same way that steve was for her, and she thinks about him so much, about how steve was with dustin and how she is with will now, and it hurts so much, but it also hurts in that way that feels sort of like healing
and dustin and the others return from the upside down (where he probably had a freak out where he got so pissed at nancy for almost dying before hugging her), and they hear about everything that's happened while they were gone, and he hears about robin almost being killed by a demogorgon, and robin being in the hospital basement hunted by demodogs, and he walks straight up to her and robin winces because she never knows what to do for him anymore, but dustin just hugs her and cries and apologizes and tells her how glad he is that she's okay
