So as a white leftist you claim that you want to learn from black people, that you want to listen and change but as soon as we get emotional (we literally have to talk about our pain) or the conversation gets uncomfortable, you change your mind and get defensive? Yeah this is how I know you’re just performative.

So we all know purity culture exists mainly to shame, belittle and oppress women. Purity culture is only harmful to us women. However I’ve realised something that I wanted to share. A part of purity culture is shaming women for having sex or multiple sexual partners, dress in a sensual way, talking openly about sex however you can mostly apply that to white women. As a black woman the things I listed are almost excepted from you by a young age. To keep it short I think that purity culture shames white women the most because of the Madonna-whore complex. Black women are typically seen as the “whore” so there’s no need in keeping black women pure by forcing purity culture upon us. When white women talk about purity culture as a universal issue for all women, I never feel included. My reality is completely different because of my Blackness. I don’t present myself in a sensual way yet men assume I must be someone with a high Sex drive. Sometimes men even tell me to my face that I must be sexually active BECAUSE I’m a black woman.

Over the past few weeks I’ve seen a lot regarding white feminism, white queer spaces and safe spaces for black people (especially black women), therefore I have some thoughts to share. First of all we as black women have to be more careful with letting white women into our spaces. We tend to forget that white women are still white, therefore possibly harmful to us. Women’s safe spaces are dominated by white women, in these spaces the default are white women so as a black woman (women of colour in general) don’t think this space is a safe space to you. And to go back to queer spaces, it’s the same principle however men enter these spaces as well because of their queerness. It’s really important to mention queer men, because from what I’ve learned as soon as their identity gets harmed, they don’t hesitate to get racist and sexist. Queer white spaces are never a safe space for non white queer people. The lack of self reflection because they got harmed so it’s fine to discriminate other marginalised groups is TERRIFIC.

Let me tell you why racism is that deep. Racism shaped my thinking and self perception, to an extent where I’m extremely careful with how I act, react, live but also love. But I wanted to talk about a rather banal example on how racism shapes black people. I thought about buying a shirt from Paul frank, while debating whether to buy it or not I decided not to, but not for the reason a non black person would think… but rather because there’s a big monkey on the front. As a black person you are the one that must be careful to not give non black people the chance to say something racist. But it’s NEVER the case that a non black person gives you the room to be yourself and takes the fear from you of being racially attacked. So no I didn’t buy the shirt because I was scared of what a non black person might have to say about it. Even if nobody would say anything, racism still limits me from expressing myself in any shape or form.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but saying women should cover up because “there are children” is purely sexualisation and misogyny. Children don’t see the female anatomy as something sexual, we learn this while growing up. Matter of fact children should see female bodies in a non sexual way, so they won’t have misogyny indoctrinated in a young age.
