"Without urgent support, we donât know how much longer we can continue"
Cork Cat Action Trust (CAAT) has one goal: to stop the cycle of "suffering caused by uncontrolled breeding of feral cats". To do this, the rescue has a humane Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programme, meaning that they safely trap feral cats and bring them to a vet for neutering, before returning them to their home territory.
A single pair of breeding cats can produce up to 20,000 kittens throughout their lives. Without the charity's intervention, feral colonies can grow rapidly, leading to suffering for the cats and challenges for local communities.
CAAT also provides much-needed veterinary care for sick and injured cats, covering everything from vaccinations to amputations, and has already helped over 600 cats this year. The rescue is a volunteer not-for-profit organisation and does not have a sanctuary, meaning that their space is always limited, especially when it comes to fostering in-need cats and kittens.
With vet bills costing the volunteers âŹ11,000 every month, the charity has been forced to launch a GoFundMe campaign in the hopes of keeping them afloat - and able to help more cats. They wrote: "Despite working tirelessly to keep costs down, our funds are nearly gone. We rarely launch appeals like this, but we must be honest without urgent support, we donât know how much longer we can continue...
"Together, we can keep saving lives. With your help, Corkâs most vulnerable cats will have a future worth living."
The charity says that every donation, no matter how small, goes directly to:
- Veterinary bills, including neutering, emergency care, surgeries and medicine
- Food and litter for foster cats and kittens
- Equipment and supplies for Trap-Neuter-Return

An Open Letter to All Puppies With Parvo Virus (That Were Unvaccinated)
Dear Adorable Fluffs,
Iâm sorry.
Iâm sorry that you donât understand what is happening to you.
Iâm sorry we have to poke and prod you every little bit so we can make sure you stay alive and get the treatment you need.
Iâm sorry that your intestines is literally and continuously sloughing unto the puppy pad diapers that you are surrounded by.
Iâm sorry I canât explain to you why we have to draw blood so often or why you are hooked up to so many tubes and fluid lines.
Iâm sorry that you feel so crummy that you wonât eat. Puppies should be able to love to eat.
Iâm sorry that instead of a bright, hyper puppy you are reduced to being a miserable and dull corpse-like ball of diarrhea.Â
Iâm sorry that your entire body might begin to shut down and you might go into septic shock.
Iâm sorry that even around the clock care might not be good enough.
Iâm sorry that even the best medicine might not be good enough.
Iâm sorry that even if you walk out of here alive and possibly eventually happy, you had to endure even a single second of this awful, cruel, debilitating disease.
Iâm sorry that that this was most likely preventable (Yes, there are exceptions, but they are rare and almost always has a valid reason why the vaccine didnât work- i.e. didnât store the vaccine correctly, giving it only once without a booster, expecting it to miraculously work immediately right before or during a pravo infection etc.).Â
Iâm sorry that your owner didnât believe in vaccines or that âwe just want to give them for money.â (Hint: iF we ACTUALLY were in this career for the money, then why in the absolute world would we give a $20 vaccine when we could refuse to vaccinate and make $1,000-$7,000 ++ on each critical parvo patient that walked in the door?)
Iâm sorry that you could have been playing with your siblings and being snuggled as a puppy should but instead Iâm trying not to sob I might have to put your tiny, emaciated body into a body bag.
Iâm so sorry. You deserve so much better than this.
since it's now summer in the northern hemisphere and i am the owner of two dogs with long, thick double coats, i want to take a sec and address an extremely prevalent, often repeated phrase i see float around the internet (and IRL) in dog circles:
"double coats keep dogs warm in the winter and cool in the summer!"
the part about winter is true. the part about summer is not. this website does an excellent job discussing why this is the case and has plenty of sources cited. if you're interested in the topic, please give it a read. or, if you want the basic summary, here's mine:
Fact #1- a double coat is comprised of two layers - a topcoat, which is longer, sleeker "guard" hairs that act as a sort of shield against exposure to the elements. and an undercoat, which is shorter, softer, denser hairs that act as insulation. double coats are found on breeds of dogs such as collies, huskies, and labs. conversely a single coat, which lacks the thick undercoat layer, would be the type found on a dog like a pitbull.
(this collie is shedding its undercoat - note the lighter, softer hair pulling away from the longer darker hair. source.)
Fact #2 - dogs are mammals which obey the laws of thermodynamics, meaning they are constantly producing body heat. a dog's average body temperature is normally right around the 100f (38c), and they are constantly radiating heat. this is important.
in the winter, a double coat works fabulously for keeping a dog warm - the topcoat repels moisture and blocks wind, while the thick undercoat traps body heat and keeps it close to the skin. there's a reason why cold-weather animals like wolves and foxes and bison all have thick double coats - they work great at trapping body heat!
but then the summer. part of the myth that gets so often cited is "the undercoat traps cool air and keeps the dog cooler" to which we have to ask - what cool air? if it's 90f outside and my dog is radiating 100f heat, there's no cool air to be trapped. and even if there were, air trapped in the undercoat would be getting constantly warmed by the body heat escaping from the dog's skin. the phrasing of "traps warmth in winter and traps cold in summer" sounds nice and neat, but it's ignoring the fact that your dog is constantly producing body heat. this theory works fine on non-living objects, like a thermos full of cold water. it does not work on an object that is radiating 100f heat.
IF double coats truly kept dogs cooler in hot temperatures, we would expect to see scientific studies backing this up, right? well, the studies we've done on dogs and susceptibility to overheating say the opposite. studies show that dogs with thick double coats are MORE likely to overheat than dogs with short single coats.
here's a list of sources saying exactly this, from the blog post i linked earlier:
"Contrary to cold environments, increased insulation of fur is not beneficial to maintaining heat balance in warm environments." - Seasonal Changes in Heat Balance of Dogs Acclimatized to Outdoor Climate Yasuyuki Sugano
âPredisposing factors for heatstroke -thick haircoat" - Short technical Report on Thermoregulation in Dogs and the Pathophysiology of Hyperthermia Jerilee A. Zezula, DVM
âPredisposing Factors for Heatstroke â thick haircoat" - Heatstroke â thermoregulation, pathophysiology and predisposing factors Carey Hemmelgarn DVM ChristI Gannon DVM DacVecc
âFactors that inhibit heat dissipation: Thick, dense coat â increased insulating effectâ - Hyperthermia and Heatstroke in the Canine, Lori E. Gordon, DVM
âWell-insulated breeds with thick fur and fat may struggle to maintain a normal body temperature, especially during hot summer days and in a warm ambient environment.â - Hyperthermia during anaesthesia, Author : Clara Rigotti, Marieke De Vries 2010
âWell-insulated breeds, such as Chow Chows and St. Bernards, may struggle to maintain normal core body temperature, making them more prone to hyperthermia, especially in a warm, stressful environmentâ - Hypothermia in a chow chow under general anaesthetic, H.Jones, K.Robson ,2022
âPredisposing factors that decrease heat dissipation: Hair coat â Thicker coats decrease radiation and convectionâ - Heatstroke in small animal medicine: a clinical practice review, Scott I. Johnson, DVM, Maureen McMichael, DVM, DACVECC and George White, DVM
âa thick insulating pelage is a disadvantage in situations where energy supply is unlimited and expenditure is constrained by the capacity to dissipate body heat. This is because the pelage insulation becomes the primary constraint on heat loss. â - Maximal heat dissipation capacity and hyperthermia risk: Neglected key factors in the ecology of endotherms, Journal of Animal Ecology  79(4):726-46 J. Speakman, E. Krol
ALL of these studies are saying the same thing - animals with thicker coats struggle to not overheat when in a hot environment, and are more at risk for overheating and heat stroke.
so now here's tumblr's favorite part - nuance. does this mean that every dog with a double coat is completely intolerant of heat, and you should shave them all bald instead?
no.
the double coat DOES offer some advantages in hot weather - primarily relating to the topcoat. it blocks UV radiation from reaching the dogs skin, and keeps the heat of the sun off of direct contact with the skin. this is extremely useful! my old dog was a greyhound, who had a short, black single coat. he was miserably intolerant of heat because even mild sunshine would rapidly heat his surface temperature. the topcoat is VERY useful, and shaving a dog is ridding them of this natural barrier.
however. the undercoat is almost entirely detrimental in hot weather. again - it's entire purpose is trapping heat, and your dog is constantly radiating 100f heat.
look to nature - what happens when those fluffy, thick-furred wolves and foxes and bison hit summer? they shed out almost their entire undercoat. they get downright nakey.
(ex: arctic foxes shed dramatically - all that white fluff is the winter coat. if it kept them cooler in the summer, they would have evolved to keep it. source.)
the ideal way for a double-coated dog to deal with heat is not to shave the whole coat, but instead to brush and brush and brush the absolute crap out of their coat, and remove as much undercoat as possible. when the undercoat is reduced, it becomes looser, and allows air to flow throughout the coat. that circulating air is the key to staying cool! it wicks away the dog's body heat and provides critical cooling. instead of acting like a snug winter sweater, the coat can now act like a loose, flowing shirt.
but! if that undercoat is not thoroughly and continuously groomed and bathed and brushed, and allowed to stay heavy and thick and block airflow, then you're right back to having a dog that's broiling itself with its own body heat.
(you gotta get that undercoat out if you want any chance of not overheating. source.)
so, in conclusion: double coats are great for keeping warm in cold weather. they are NOT great for keeping cool in warm weather, and in fact can be actively harmful UNLESS you take great care to brush thoroughly to remove undercoat and allow for airflow. IF that is done, then a double-coated dog should be either just as good as, or only slightly worse off, than a dog with less hair. however, the blanket statement of "double coats trap cool air and keep dogs cooler in summer" is grossly oversimplifying the topic and not true at face value. in fact, the thing that keeps a double-coated dog the coolest is removing as much undercoat as possible - AKA, making it as close to single-coated as possible.
again, i recommend reading this blog post for more in-depth discussion and more sources.
(and no, if you do shave your double coated dog, the myth about 'the fur will never grow back the same/be ruined forever' is also just that - a myth. dogs get shaved every day for medical procedures, it grows back fine unless there's a pre-existing medical condition. it can just take ages. for more info, i recommend reading the latter part of this post).
This! And since most farmers aren't going to be constantly brushing their Great Pyrenees and other thick-coated LSGDs, many of our clients just sheer them like their sheep/goats. Especially since we deal not only with heat here, but humidity as well, and a thick, wet, matted coat is great for hot spots and fly strike đ¤˘
We are losing nearly ten percent of the planetâs insect population every decade due to human influence. If you have taken even an entry level biology course you understand how terrifying that figure is for not just humans but all life on Earth. As EO Wilson put it,
âIf all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaosâ
Even despite the urgency of this issue, there are few conservation initiatives focused solely on preserving invertebrates. The Xerces Society is one such organization! If you share my concern about insect population decline (and you are able to do so), please consider donating to their current fundraiser to help protect our most vulnerable neighbors. They are still short of their fundraising goal!

That user is a part of a dropshipping advertising scheme and are being paid to advertise these scummy websites. These websites are usually malicious in the manner that they sell cheaply products. In the worst case you'll get a bootleg or flawed product, or even a different product completely, or in even worse cases, you'll never get it at all.

Donation / Mutual Aid scams. (by @kyra45)
One of the most common and well known scams on tumblr to this day. These scams mainly revolve around brand new accounts made within a day or week reblogging very few posts and then suddenly asking for money via donations through PayPal. These blogs will send out the same copy/paste ask en masse to dozens if not hundreds of people, change their name frequently over the course of days if not weeks, and will even lie about being Palestinian, stealing stories from legitimate gofundmes, and even having conditions such as diabetes while not even knowing how it works.

Scammers pretending to be Palestinian v6 by @kyra45
Speaking of breed standards, would you be able to give me some context on what the heck is up with the German Shepherd "stack"? I see a lot of GSD owners saying it's breed standard and therefore fine, but the slant looks so extreme in some dogs that I have some skepticism about it (and also because, of course, breed standards have nothing to do with animal health).
This is a pretty hot button issue and youâre right that there is a ton of bickering back and forth about it online. Iâm happy to share my thoughts, but keep in mind that as a veterinarian I am biased towards function over form. I care way more about if a dog can do the things it wants/needs to do than how it looks. I wonât get into it here but I actually have real qualms with the distinction between âworking lineâ and âshow lineâ in some breeds.
My quick takeaway opinion- There are several orthopedic issues in the German Shepherd dog (specifically show lines) that have likely been exacerbated if not entirely caused by breeders striving for the classic âsloped backâ look that is considered breed standard.
Now that being said, it is a fact that the three point stack (how a dog is positioned when standing) greatly exaggerates the angulation of the back and hind legs. You will often see comparison images like this one that show a dog in stack versus standing square and you can clearly see the top line looks more sloped when the dog is stacked. This image is from a GSD subreddit, a pretty dog here nicely demonstrating how the stance can change the appearance of the top line.
This phenomenon is what certain hardline GSD breed standard loyalists will point to when discussing this issue. They posit that the sloped back is essentially an optical illusion caused by aesthetic posing, and therefore a German Shepherd is no more prone to orthopedic problems than any other large breed dog. This is where I disagree.
You can easily find stark examples of a poorly put together dog in any breed or mixed breed out there, so when discussing my concerns with the GSD I will only use photos of titled dogs that are accomplished within the show ring. These are not random backyard bred shepherds, but champion dogs from acclaimed lines that will almost certainly be bred to pass on their genes. When breed clubs like the AKC award these dogs as exemplars of the breed, they tacitly endorse the conformation issues Iâm about to discuss. So my beef is not with German shepherds or dog breeds in general, but specifically with breed clubs that refuse to examine whether their standard harms animals. An important disclaimer, not every breed club is like this and many take health concerns extremely seriously.
Dogs have a very different limb anatomy and gait to humans and a healthy dog is meant to walk on their paw pads. The âankleâ or hock should be upright and angled as you can see here in this nice-looking champion shepherd from 1902.
German shepherds can sometimes have a problem that is colloquially called âdropped hocksâ where that joint is abnormally loose and in more serious cases can even be touching the ground, which is completely abnormal and something I would consider a serious physical flaw. A dog having dropped hocks/tarsal hyperflexion like this is proven to cause medical issues for these dog, but unfortunately the sinking joints also help to give the dog that âclassicâ sloping look that breed clubs love.
This dog âCh Kysarah's Pot of Goldâ won best of breed at the National dog show in 2015. You can see his hock is literally flat on the ground even when not stacked
And itâs not just one dog. Here is another champion dog (Cruaghaire Catoria), who got some controversy for winning best of breed at Crufts in 2016 despite an extremely abnormal gait.
Perhaps we could excuse the low hocks when the dog is standing as being the result of the stack, but it is glaringly obvious when she moves that this is no trick of her positioning. Her entire tarsus rests on the floor as she runs and in close ups you can even see bald patches there to suggest this is a ânormalâ gait for her. In this video, the announcers agree that this is the ideal gait for a shepherd. If I saw this gait in a friendâs dog Iâd politely express my concerns for long term mobility issues and recommend an orthopedic consultation. To see it win best of breed is galling to say the least.
And lest you think the problem has been solved, hereâs another from the National Dog Show in 2023
None of these dogs could charge athletically into a field and effectively herd sheep. If we are prioritizing aesthetic over function to the degree that a dog cannot do what it was bred to do, or more importantly that it cannot do the simple things that dogs love to do, then we have veered unforgivably off course. Not to put too fine a point on it but what the fuck is the point of a breed standard if it impedes the dogâs function in any way? We have no right. German shepherds are an incredible breed of dog that have stood by us humans in some of our darkest moments; I think the breeders and kennel clubs who claim to love them the most should work harder to ensure the âchampionâ dogs they are producing can live long pain-free lives. If we have to adjust our notion of what the breed is âsupposedâ to look like then so fucking be it.
This is too long already so Iâm not getting into hip dysplasia, DM, carpal laxity, elbow dysplasia or other conditions that exist in the breed. If German shepherd clubs want to distance themselves from the notion that their breed standard is causing problems with canine health then they will need to stop publicly lavishing awards on dogs with medically concerning gait issues and start focusing on breeding dogs that can run around a ring without causing even the most casual of onlookers to realize âsomethingâs not right thereâ
Important! Your pet's RFID chip number might have been disconnected this week.
The Texas-based company, Save This Life, has ceased operations and that could become an issue for pet owners.
Is your pet chipped? They should be. Do you know who made the chip?
Pet RFID chips are so small that there's really only room on them for a serial number. When your lost pet is brought to a shelter or a vet's office, they can scan the chip, read that number, and then type it into a program that draws from a series of linked databases to find your name and phone number. That's how they find you, and tell you that Silly Lilly von Wigglesbottom has gone wandering, and she's safe and sound, and would you come get her, please?
Texas-based Save This Life, which provided chips to vets and shelters all across the US, has all at once and abruptly gone dark; their database is just gone. Their customers were not given warning and so did not know to change their registration to another company. A lot of animals have basically become anonymous now.
If you don't know what company you've been using, call your vet's office and ask what pet chip number they have on file. If the chip number starts with 991 or 900164, it's probably a Save This Life chip.
If it turns out yours is one of the affected cases, the chip itself will still be fine! There's no need to add another, or anything like that. You'll just need to transfer the number to another company, and your vet should be able to recommend the one that they like the best.
Reblogging this info to add that my local rescue org recommended this free registry, which is connected to the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool:

Please please please PLEASE keep your cats indoors right now. H5N1 (HPAI, highly pathogenic avian influenza) is zoonotic to cats, and it is just as deadly for them. Additionally, if you have a way to keep your shoes away from your cat(s), or sanitize them after being out in the world (bleach footbath for example), a little biosecurity wouldn't hurt.
A sanctuary in Washington just lost 20 of their rescue big cats to this virus. It is not getting less dangerous for your cats this year than it was last.
The people who run this sanctuary here on Harstine Island say the death of the cats feels like a death in the family.
It has ALWAYS been dangerous to let house cats free roam without supervision, but it's becoming dangerous right now to be taking them on leashes if they will have access to ground birds have recently been on, or water they have accessed. Catios might be okay, if they're covered and well-screened, but I would take a moment to subscribe to your local state ag department's email or phone alerts for HPAI in your area, and react accordingly even for covered outdoor areas.
I would like to thank you very much for your wonderful donations that enabled me to help a large number of sick cats and dogs, including a cat suffering from this skin disease, and she began treatment at the vet.
My goal now is to buy a tent to contain the innocent voiceless souls from the cold and provide them with shelter and food.
Your small donation can make a differenceđđđđľđ¸

This is my beloved SpyBoy. He is a very sick little dude. He was diagnosed with diabetes recently, which has resulted in half a dozen vet visits, an extended stay at the cat hospital, and seriously devastating vet bills.
My husband was recently laid off, and I'm disabled, so we currently have zero income and zero savings.
The vet has let us make partial payments, but the balance is coming due on the first.
Our gofundme is stalled out at $2700, and we need $5200 by January first, just to catch up with what we currently owe.
So I am going to start selling my treasures.
Starting with my signed script from Star Trek TOS, The Trouble With Tribbles.
Today is Saturday, Dec 21, 2024. At midnight ET on Monday the 23rd, whoever has made the largest new donation to our gofundme will own this fabulous signed script, complete with a tribble doodle!
Please help my SpyBoy if you can, and score yourself this little piece of Trek history!

I have personally witnessed so many instances of pet owners forcing beloved animals to continue living far beyond the point of their quality of life hitting zero that the whole "Deux Face" situation was absolutely nothing new to me, except for the wave of genuine nausea I experienced at the social media reaction to her existence.
I can honestly say that I feel a palpable sense of relief, knowing that that calf is no longer being forced to live in that condition, and there's no amount of "well, she had vet care!" or "it doesn't seem like she's in pain!" that would have mollified me. I have been in hundreds of QoL consults with clients who parrot the exact same sentiments while their animal lies, completely recumbent and unresponsive, on the examination table. It's the exact same thing, except compounded by the ghoulish addition of the calf's value as a sideshow act.
Any normal presenting newborn calf that failed to thrive as she did would have been euthanized on welfare grounds long before the 26 day mark. A dairy calf is literally supposed to be able to walk away from its birthing site, a calf whose only developmental milestone was that it "can kinda lift its head" is a calf that has something inherently wrong with it. If Deux Face wasn't deformed in a way that makes well-meaning assholes spout that stupid poem, then she probably would have been put out of her misery ages ago. I keep thinking of the grotesque congenital deformities that domestic cattle can present with, twisted spines and fused joints and extreme hydrocephalus and cleft palates, and how, if Deux Face had presented with QoL reducing examples of any of those conditions, people wouldn't have even batted an eye at her euthanasia. She was literally forced to keep on living, just so people could keep "consuming" her continued existence. She was forced to live, not because it was to her benefit, but for the benefit of the farm, who romanticised and profited from her, and the benefit of idiots who think a goddamn newborn calf should be a source of inspiration in their own lives.
The people on this site who mourned that we didn't get to gawk at this animal a little longer disgust me. The only difference between you and the woman who keeps her 19 year old constant DKA, cushingoid, and severely arthritic Shih Tzu alive is that she, at least, has the excuse that this is an animal she has loved and cared for for decades. She's blinded by love, and needs to be counselled towards the realisation that the dog's existence is now more for her benefit than his. You're just upset that there are no more juicy pics of a recumbent, half-dead calf that you can caption with "TWice aS MaNY STArs As UsuaL!!!!!" in goofy ass fonts.
The only sad thing about Deux Face's death is that it took so long. Fight me on it, I don't care. Your gross parasocial relationship with a dying farm animal you've never met was not worth that animal's enforced suffering.
For years now, scammers have took to stealing info from legit fundraising posts to steal funds from actual users. So what do they do? It's quite simple to explain the process as someone whose been tracking those I've seen or spotted while searching around. Scammers reuse and redo these so often you can usually find a pattern and catch it before you reblog their post. This post is quite long, but should be useful.
tl:dr - An ask to reblog a pinned post is generally a scam related to pets and the pictures used are stolen from other sites and any info the scam post uses was stolen too with only minor adjustments like the scammers own info that may use the name of someone real.
Scammers do as follows:
Saves a pfp from a blogger and copies the blog info from someone else by copy/pasting it and saving it
Turns off asks
Searches a tag to reblog random posts to look relevant, generally about 10
Hides their blog so it can't be seen outside of desktop and archives aren't easy to access
Searches Facebook for publicly accessible posts where pets need help and may seek it from other sites. They will save photos of a cat but also will copy any information from the post or a different post with minor adjustments if needed
Once they have followed those steps, the scammers will then start to find random blogs. Some blogs may be past targets who fell for the scam and as a result may fall for it again. Or in other cases, blogs that have been targeted before by them and answered the ask without finding out its a scam. Some asks sent go as follows.
Hello there! Just wondering if its okay for you to check the post i pinned and reblog/boost it? Im in desperate need of help im really sorry for coming across your inbox (pls answer this privately) only if its ok đ thank you and stay safe

Hello there! Just wondering if its okay for you to check the post i pinned and reblog/boost it? Im in desperate need of help im really sorry for coming across your inbox (pls answer this privately) only if its ok :( thank you and stay safe
Hello! Im sorry if I did bother you by coming across your inbox. Just asking for some help if you can share/boost my post or pinned post rather. It means a lot!
hello! can you pls boost my post about my dog? tysm if u do!
hi ⥠can you reblog the post about my cat? tysm!â
The scammer will send several asks at once to many different blogs and wait to see how many will answer and reblog their scam post. They rely on no one looking up the info the post has, because doing so would show that the post is not in good faith and has stolen it's contents from somewhere else. Those who have no searched the post will likely share it and their mutuals will also share it not knowing the post is actually a scam. Often, these scams do get found out fast but unfortunately some will fall for it. It is likely many have donated money before the scam is found out. If you get an ask or see someone reblog a post that looks suspicious, do the following in tumblr search.
Search the username to see if there's any warnings
Paste the ask and see if others got it
See if the listed paypal has pre-existing alerts for it
Checking the blog sending asks will likely show it is a few days old, though some cases may be an older blog that was broken into and reused and repurposed into a scam blog so the actual owner will never know of it happening since they likely abandoned the website.
Once you know a blog is a scam, please alert your followers by explaining it's a scam and detailing why it's a scam by showing blogs the scammer used that are gone now or linking to previous warnings. It's advised to then report the scam blog like so:

If anyone has seen this post or variations of it floating around on social media, just know that itâs complete rubbish and has no scientific basis. Yes you shouldnât cool down a dog suffering from heat stroke too fast, but letting them lick/eat and ice cube wonât do that.
The only real risk of giving your dog ice cubes is that they may choke on them.
If this story about the dog dying has any truth in it at all, the dog either has some other issue going on OR was already suffering from heat stroke. Heat stroke is unfortunately sometimes fatal despite intense veterinary treatment.
"Some of their tails are missing, they had been eaten. Others lack an eye, an ear," one expert said.
Authorities on Wednesday started hauling away 177 lions, tigers, jaguars and other exotic big cats that were found at an animal rescue center in the mountains on Mexico Cityâs south side.
The federal Attorney Generalâs Office for Environmental Protection said 202 animals in all, including monkeys, dogs, donkeys and coyotes, were being taken to other locations.
Dozens of heavily armed city police raided the âBlack Jaguar White Tigerâ animal sanctuary Tuesday after images of rail-thin, distressed and injured lions circulated on social media.
The founder of the reserve told local media that he had rescued some of the animals and that some of them arrived in bad shape.
âIt all started with a worker who had been laid off recently and he had lots of video evidence showing abused animals,â Association of Zoos President Ernesto Zazueta told Reuters. âWe tried to approach (the sanctuaryâs) area at the back, where you can see animals in very bad conditions â animals down to their bones, with mange, maimed, some of them had had their tails cut out, some with bugs.â
Mexico City police chief Omar Garcia Harfuch said the property had been seized âfor the crime of improper use of property and mistreatment of animals.â
City police said in a statement that âaccording to the inspection, the property where the animals were kept is zoned for agricultural or grazing purposes, not for keeping the kind of species found.â
Under Mexican law, private individuals can register to keep exotic cats and other animals in supervised wildlife management units. The facility raided Tuesday appears to have filed such paperwork.
Glad this dreadful place has finally been shut down. Sick of seeing so-called cute viral photos and videos from Black Jaguar White Tiger all over social media.Â
