Tanabrax’s medallion, stated in Spinjitzu Brothers book 2: Lair of Tanabrax to be from Djinnjago, allowed Tanabrax to pull the souls from peoples’ bodies and put them into a new vessel (in Tanabrax’s case he used puppets)

And of course there’s the Djinn Blade, which we all know what it does but as a refresher just in case: Nadakhan used it to trap the souls of his victims in Skybound by either striking them down or tricking them into wishing it all away.

You got stuff on the FSM family? A big difference between the movieverse and the showverse is the fact that Wu and Garmadon ACTUALLY have a mother in the movie. So I’m curious as to how that adds to the overall family dynamic. 👀

Nothing too much, though I do vaguely recall one time establishing Wu and Garm’s mom was an Oni. So I guess Lloyd’s dragon and Oni blood kinda balances itself out from having a little more of each on both sides of his family.

Also I don’t CARE what the movie says we made Garmadon the little brother because… look at him. Look at movieverse Garmadon and tell me that’s the OLDER sibling. Nuh uh. No way.

The FSM himself is much younger than the show, and his defeat of Wojira with Nyad was only maybe like 400-600 years ago. Now, Nyad is still the first Master of Water, but she got put into a deep sleep for a few millennia King Arthur style while her element went down through her descendants before eventually returning to her because Wojira was super pissy about being sealed away and a mortal being given a fragment of her power.

I’m going to take this moment to apologize for this post taking so long. In the middle of typing it I realized Imp and I had an issue with our timeline regarding Nyad being the first Master of Water but the battle was only a few centuries ago- the King Arthur-style coma was the solution.

Anyway, back to the post!

The Wojira thing happened because of the FSM raising Ninjago from the sea. Same reason he did it in the show, to escape the insane custody battle that was the Oni and the Dragon. Of course Nyad merged with the sea, Wojira was sealed away once more to be a problem for another day. Though, strangely enough, depending on who you ask about what happened, there’s… whispers that the Source Dragon of Life herself intervened in the battle, giving Nyad the path to victory and strengthening the seal on Wojira’s slumber.

Anyway, you can roughly guess how things went from there. The FSM meets an Oni, his wife, and they have two children, Wu and Garmadon. I think Wu being the older of the two definitely would play an interesting role compared to the show. I do like the show’s dynamic of neither actually being favored by the FSM but each perceiving the other to be, so I want to keep that in, maybe a bit more one-sided on Garmadon’s part. Garmadon taking after the Oni side more is probably an interesting point within the dynamic since he has a full Oni mother.

We just kinda decided it’s a Thing elemental master can do. By what means we’ve… yet to specify but basically EMs, under certain circumstances, can split their element into multiple components, which is what happened with Nature. Dareth (yes, that Dareth), the previous (and kinda current?) Master of Nature, chose to split his powers into four parts among his son, Dove, and two others who aren’t technically his kids but he’s like a second father for them so yeah (Clancee and Benthomaar). So currently the element of Nature is split along the lines of-

Land Animals (Dareth)

Birds (Dove)

Plants (Clancee)

Marine Life (Benthomaar)

As for Shadow, in rare cases, twins born to an elemental master will both inherit the power of the EM parent. This is extremely rare and can only happen if only one parent is an EM (see: Movieverse Kai and Nya are twins but have two EM parents thus each took on one element), but it’s possible (in most instances of twins born to an EM which twin is older will take the element unless other interventions are taken). This is what happened to Ombra, the previous Master of Shadow, when she had her two sons, Decker (OC) and Hades (movieverse counterpart of Shade).

(Also interesting how the element of Time has become permanently split. The twins each chose their own successor to pass their powers on to, rather than finding one person to give both halves of the power).

Echo and Nelson are close friends, having met through Dr. Julien and Nelson’s uncle/surrogate father, William (the mailman!), who knew each other from the days of the Skeleton War (though the kids don’t know that). Unlike his brother, Echo is homeschooled so Dr. Julien does his best to take Echo out into the city or have friends his (Echo’s) age over as much as possible so he doesn’t feel lonely or isolated. The two are in a little friend group with Arin, Jake, Sora, and a few others, it’s adorable.

As for how they eventually become the Masters of Time… Time is an element that, unlike others, which have been manually split by previous masters in the movieverse (Nature, Shadow, etc.), is naturally in two. “Control time, control everything” isn’t a battle cry of superiority, it’s a warning. The full power of time would be too much for one person to handle, so it has always been and always will be in two separate masters, usually twins, though not always. The Time Twins are some of the characters Imp, Falcon, and myself have swapped the moralities of, and they’re the chill curators of the Ninjago Museum of History (even if Acronix keeps starting beef on Chirp with people), a place Echo and Nelson happen to both frequent and have annual passes to.

Now, the twins are getting older, and they’ve been forced to have the conversation about what to do about their powers by this fact. The two came to the obvious conclusion they’d much rather choose new masters they trust rather than leave that in the hands of destiny. Of course, this isn’t exactly an easy choice, especially with an element as delicate as Time. They need to find successors who are young enough they can internalize the severity of going rogue with this power, but old enough to understand that it is serious. Successors with the proper support systems in place and allies to help them from straying to the wrong path. Successors who share a bond close enough to let them use the element effectively and fight as one.

Enter Echo and Nelson, two kids who are already close, surrounded by not only veterans of The Skeleton War, but also other elemental masters and each have supportive older siblings. They’re both eight, so the perfect age to not be too set in stone with any preconceived notions about going wild with “superpowers”, but still able to understand what the twins mean when they say “control time, control everything”.

Plus Dr. Julien has said he’s wanted to get Echo some self defense lessons, but is too terrified to leave the kid alone anywhere. So win-win!

The Time Twins still have plenty of good years in them, so it won’t be for a while that they pass on their elements, but the kids (with the permission of their parents/guardian) are now training in self defense at the museum, plus some moral lessons with the various exhibits. Once the two grow up, they’ll take over for the Ninja Force with their own team, just as the Ninja Force took over for Wu and Lady Iron Dragon. It’ll be new threats aside from Garmadon by then, but they’ll be ready.
