âCute? Â Whoever said anything about cute?â
âAlthough if thatâs anybody in this situation, itâs you, little pixie,â he added for good measure.
âCute and little?? Well now that does it-!â
She might have had to jump just to get him in a headlock but when she did her grip was relentless.Â

Hiatus notice?
Turns out my internet is still down and only my dashboard is working so I canât do replies right now. I assume weâll be getting it back on by Friday but Iâm not sure. In the meantime I will try to get somewhere with wifi but I make no promises since Iâm usually stuck in the house 24/7 x.x
Sorry for the delay I know I owe like, everybody.Â
Reblog with a gif of the animal your muse would be.
âOh.â Â Dustfinger was taken aback by the question. Â I already have work. Â And I donât especially want to stay in this hotel for very long. Â But she had been very kind to him, and it would be nice to be able to pay her back for that, and fire-juggling wasnât going to cut it.
âIâm not so sure thatâs such a good ideaâŚâ  He really didnât want to elaborate, but felt that Andy would require some sort of an explanation.  âI donât normally do well with staying in one place.  You probably know that from the book, though.â
âActually I read it a long time ago.â She informed him dismissively, secretly grateful for his answer. She didnât much like working menial jobs either, or staying in one place for too long. Sheâd been thinking it only be a couple of days in this hotel but what job wouldnât demand a bigger commitment then that? It was almost like heâd saved her from a horrible mistake. âI donât remember much except you loved that one girl and had a fight with the skinny dude who I think I had a weird crush on and there was a guy and a bear, stuff happened, and then you d-â Andy stopped on a dime, expression held tight against the panic bells that sounded in her head. She didnât dare look up, just staring intently at her phone. Did he know he was going to die? She... she shouldnât tell him, right? What kind of person would do that, just tell someone theyâre going to die? Andyâs mouth was good for a lot of things, but not that. âSorry, message.â She half-lied, letting out a breath through her nose and flicking back into her email. She did have a new message, just one sheâd been ignoring in favor of watching the download. Her friend would pay for the room but sheâd already decided not to stay. Surely they could use that money for food instead though? She sighed a bit as she tapped out a reply. âWe should get to bed then if weâre going to be leaving first thing.âÂ
His eyebrows shot up. Â âLike me? Â You mean more than tolerate?â
âLike two-percent more. And thatâs as high as I go, Stretch.âÂ
He accepted her hand gratefully. Â He could already feel his legs turning to jelly at her mention of a big stick. Â His best weapon was fire, but he tried not to make it too obvious; people with special powers were usually âpromotedâ and never heard from again, as the Black Prince and his bear had been. Â Some said they were sent out on secret missions too dangerous for the rest of the army, some that they were asked to teach others their skills, and some that they were killed lest they turn on their less powerful masters.
As the horn was sounded, calling the troops to rally, Dustfinger picked a pair of batons, dipped in tar so theyâd catch fire more easily, and a set of throwing knives from his stash of weapons, and strapped the army-issued sword around his waist, then fell in line with the hoard making their way out of the mess tents. Â More than half of them were Strolling Players, the rest peasants of some trade or another, all wearing the same haggard expression, all dreading the task before them, for which none of them had any training.
Andy didnât bother with blades, blades were messy and easier to kill with even by accident. As such she wasnât exactly fond of them and had lent out her sword to someone whoâd lost their own in a body somewhere on the battle field ages ago. But all was well, she had her stick spanning almost her entire height, thick and sturdy with one end heavier than the other; she balanced it on the back of her neck and draped each arm over the sides, parting the crowd carelessly with itâs with. Usually sheâd use it as an excuse to shove her way to the front where sheâd be decidedly less in the way but a more conspicuous target for the enemy. Not today however, today she trailed directly behind Dustfinger lingering back a dozen or so steps. It couldnât be too obvious, not after what she did while they were eating. If the officers started to suspect she was protecting him rather than serving her king, sheâd be forcibly removed and relocated. It felt like a thin wire she walked in any direction and all the acrobatics in the world couldnât keep her aloft. Again she thought about deserting and entertained the idea of dragging Dustfinger if he refused to go. But heâd already said he would and that was what scared her. If it was a bad decision, whatever happened to him would be her fault. But if they stayed and he died anyway she knew beyond logic sheâd blame herself for that as well. Fighting seemed like the only option. Fight and donât allow your comrades to die. It was all she could do.Â

âTerrific.â Â His mocking smile faded into a scowl.
âRemind me how you convinced me to go through with this again?â
It hadnât been easy. Â He still stayed as far away from cars as he could manage. Â Flying was for birds and dragons, not for human beings, any child could tell you that. Â And yet, Andy had insisted it was the only way to find the book, and he couldnât exactly say no to that. Â He still wondered if she had an ulterior motive, what with the specific choice of location and the sudden carelessness for the money the trip would cost. Â She hadnât discussed it, but it had to be a lot.
âBelieve me I donât want to do this anymore than you do, but nobody would send me the damn thing.â She groaned, eyes rolling back into her head. Was he going to whine the entire way? And here sheâd been kind enough to ask how he was doing, unbelievable, ungrateful, more like.  Andy backed through the metal detector without a fuss and grabbed their carry on things off the conveyor belt. checking to make sure everything was there. âTrust me it would have been a lot easier to move a book than people.â She called back. And she couldnât get a round trip out of her mother if her life depended on it so itâs not like she could have just gone to pick it up and come back. And would she have really done that? She stopped to question. Gone all the way back to the States and back to Europe again just for him? Something told her she would, though she was sure most people wouldnât. âThink on the bright side, none of your nasty little friends will be following you and so youâre sure to get the book before they do no matter what this time.â The girl reminded him with a waggling brow as she peaked around the machine.Â
Dustfinger sank gratefully onto the soft bed next to Andy, but not too close. âWhat is is?â Her mood had changed from mockingly joking to slightly serious, and he wasnât sure he liked that. He hadnât been planning on sticking around long enough for any serious topic to come up. Perhaps she had found out something about his book, or just wanted to ask him to explain what exactly had happened when Silvertongue had read him out, or after. Or maybe she wanted him to leave. That wouldnât be so bad; he might even be comfortable with bringing it up first.
âIf I can get my friend to wire me enough cash to keep this room for a couple days, will you pick up part time work?â She asked bluntly, as though theyâd already made an agreement to start traveling together. Andy was aware that they had made no such thing, but sheâd already decided to train him and to her that meant sticking together. In a hotel room or on the road hardly mattered but she guessed they both needed to build up their cash reserve to avoid going hungry again. âNothing too strenuous of course, you need to heal.â She reminded him, not taking her eyes off her phone. âBut Iâm sure you can manage to cut a vegetable or something.âÂ
