Thinking about it, I’m pretty sure my ancestors would be horrified with me.
Not because I’m lazy or unworthy or anything like that…
…but because one of my distant uncles was among the eight survivors of the Essex, the ship that inspired the ending of Moby Dick and sank after being rammed by a whale, and what do I fuckin do after my bloodline has this Ordeal at Sea?
I get a fuckin degree in Marine Science and go back the fuck out there.
#op its your job to kill that whale

okay, this post succeeded in making me read Shards of Honor and yeah, alright, it fucking slaps. this part made me laugh, pregnancy through moral obligation and signing the wrong delivery form

do europeans know about beverage drive thrus
I saw this and IMMEDIATELY tossed it into my international chat like a live grenade and it has caused much mayhem, so thank you. Results so far:
Mixed results from the Americans because this shit is legal in only 30 states and almost impossible to get past a zoning committee so while they exist, they're extremely localized. Lots of yelling at Ohio.
---
Saskatchewan: "What's insane to me is that you have these with the population density you have. What am I going to hit in Turtleford?"
---
Bahia and Sao Paulo: "I'm stunned we don't have these tbh."
Prague: "We have these in my city, but only for boats."
Manaus: "My uncle has one of these! He also has a window on the other side so you can drive your boat up too :)"
(much Brazilian and Czech high-fiving)
---
Brisbane: "There's an astonishing level of trust being displayed that people aren't just going to open a beer immediately"
Tallahassee: "Oh no, there is 100% cop camped like half a mile down the road to arrest people who didn't stow the booze correctly."
Brisbane: "Oh it's an invasive policing operation! Yeah, that's the USA."
---
Newcastle: "No, this looks correct for the country that has bears breaking into your house". (The Australians and Africans have a bit where every time someone mentions their wildlife, they mass @me (who had a bear in my house) and the guy from Singapore whose mom adopted a wild water monitor and says it's her favorite son now)
The aforementioned Singaporean: "How am I exposed to an onslaught of your media and culture at all times and you STILL find new ways to horrify me?"
---
Vatican City: "You can ride your bike through the brewery to get beer but the abbot in charge doesn't like it"
---
Jakarta: "We don't have this because we're Muslim but we do have drive-thru Marijuana"
Kyoto: "We don't have these because we have public transportation. You can buy liquor from vending machines at the stations though."
Munich: "We don't have these because we are disciplined enough to pack our beer with us if we are going somewhere that drinking is acceptable, or there will be beer at that location when we arrive."
---
India: "Why have drive-thru Liquor, when you can have liquor delivered to your vehicle? GET ON OUR LEVEL" (no less than nine different images from across the country of people in trucks that have been specifically modified to operate the business of driving up to other vehicles in traffic and selling them liquor)
---
Pudasjävi: "...I should open one of these."
Everyone: "NO!!!"
(he has decided against this because "half the year people only use snowmobiles, so I'd have to shovel snow INTO the drive all winter and that's too much work")
How does the international chat feel about the ones that are fast food-style drive thrus that serve mixed drinks, instead of being a modified liquor store?
General Consensus is that these are far more respectable and a much more sane design than "drive your truck through the middle of the 7/11"
Several people would like to know what a "Crawgator" is though, including myself.
Look I know this is a scientific publication but you don’t understand— we need to include milk and cookies in the photo. We have to. Otherwise the science suffers
in love with this medieval art where this lady has been shot by an arrow and just looks so unimpressed
oh noo...
Because I think the previous post immediately got some people defensive and this might be a better parallel:
I lived in a city that had literally 1/4 mile of bike lane. Total. And it was a few 1-2 block sections that didn't even connect. Absolutely fucking horrible bike/pedestrian infrastructure.
The city I live in now has some of the best bike infrastructure on the continent, and other cyclists here will be like "Oh, you think this is better? We still have people promoting metal bike lane bollards over cement, and you think our infrastructure is good??"
Yes? Fucking yes?? There even more cyclist deaths in the new city, but that's mostly a function of actually having cyclists, because it is obviously better. Sure, it can keep improving! Awesome! But it is so obviously better here??
After having an actual majority conservative Republican city council, sorry if I don't think that your barista supporting a different progressive candidate than you makes them a 'fascist'.

Achilles wouldn’t have died if he was wearing OSHA approved work boots.
Don’t let workplace safety be YOUR Achilles heel.
some of you weren’t around for the fan fiction dot net purge of 2002 (when they banned explicit content and mass-deleted thousands of fics) and the livejournal purge of 2007 (when they deleted hundreds of blogs, disproportionately targeting queer & kink content) and it shows
this kind of policing is why ao3 was created
remember, kids, the three laws of fandom are:
- don’t like; don’t read
- your kink is not my kink
- ship and let ship
"if i had a time machine i would go back in time and kill hitler"
I would put sea mines around medieval britain. i would give hannibal barca ww2 era heavy artillery and tell him not to stop till he starts seeing gauls. i would give boudica a fucking abrams. i would appear before jesus like an angel and tell him "you gotta stop. not cause theyll kill you, youre fine with that, surprisingly, but because your fanclub is gonna spend about 1500 years making everything worse for everyone, everywhere." I would take a glock back in time and shoot romulus, shoot remus, and shoot that damn dog too just to be safe. i would be on the side of christopher columbus' ship in a scuba suit planting c4 on that bitch like rainbow six siege. i would be waging a one woman campaign of terror across andalusia to prevent the reconquista. i would be getting way out in front of that shit is what im saying,
The only comments that matter are all the people saying they would beat paul of tarsus to death with a rock, the one person who reminded me that hannibal came in through the alps, and the one person who said they were in love with me. to all the people saying "you need to eliminate all the abrahimics", you are all suspicious as FUCK to me i need you to know that.
see the premise of "if you struggle brushing your teeth, just do it in the shower" relying on logic of "you might struggle with teeth but surely you shower every day right? right...?" is just so hilariously wrong it's asinine that it's one of the most popular such advice
In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.
I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!
From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!
I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.
The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.
(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)
If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.
The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.
insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
delete -> self explanatory
on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic
The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.
Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

has anyone noticed recently that it's expensive
times like these really make you appreciate pouring river water in your socks
I love it when video essayists want to make a video about a conspiracy or something, and obviously the most engaging title is to ask the central question of the conspiracy, but they're clearly worried that people glancing at titles and not watching the videos will take the question title as support for the conspiracy and possibly introduce new people to it who will take it as fact (since a video essayist they trust told them), so they put the answer right there on the thumbnail like
i like when they do that because i want the tea on the helen keller doubters but wouldnt want to accidentally give a view to a video about something i know isnt true
