March 24th HW
After seeing Cameron’s World in class, I realized that I am really interested in internet archives. I use the word “archives” instead of history because I feel like archives are less about specifically describing a period of time and instead are focused on capturing the essence of a time. For instance, when we did the timeline activity in class, the activity was focused on facts and concrete ideas. However, an archive is less focused and instead tells a bigger story. When looking at the different images in Cameron’s World, I was able to learn about the ways people at that time thought about their presence on the internet, internet culture, what expression on the internet meant, and what people thought was valuable to communicate. While I do not learn much about who designed these images or the years the images were created, I feel like I leave with something larger that allows me to better reflect on the present technoculture and future.Â
For my group project, I hope that we can explore creating an archive of some kind as well. Specifically, I would like to create a symbolic piece that allows people to gain an understanding of internet culture in the past so they can reflect on the present as well as the future. Since I am really interested in language (and how it related to a culture), it would be awesome if we could create an internet language archive. It would be interesting to see how internet language has changed over the years and if there is any correlation in the way people view their relationship with the internet. Did early internet speak give more power to people (which is why people felt so liberated)? Or was early internet speak made by the people rather than corporations which is why people were more free? It would be fun to see if the project could explore these questions and more!
