every andreil fan can be divided into one of two categories. i know how i feel but i'm curious as to what the majority of people who see this would vote.

#I voted he would not say that for several reasons #I'm not usually a fan of giving characters nicknames that aren't used in Canon. I feel like there's a consistent need to give characters #nicknames even when in canon everyone calls them by their full name. We know the Foxes that do have nicknames: Matt Dan Nicky #and it just seems that people think everyone NEEDS a nickname and sometimes people just don't like nicknames & prefer their full name #Neil canonically calls Andrew by his full name. Andrew also does have canonical trauma with nicknames such as A.J. and while he doesn't #have any canonical trauma surrounding “Drew” Andrew does strike me as a character who may view nicknames as “childish” and therefore #would enjoy the autonomy of having a full adult name. Especially b/c having a proper name IS important to Andrew #considering he went out of his way to change his last name to 'Minyard' from Doe. Neil also doesn't strike me as the kind of character #to think to give people nicknames considering he called Nicky & Dan 'Nicholas' and 'Danielle' prior to finding out that they had preferred #nicknames especially b/c Neil ALSO recognizes the importance of names - such as dropping the Nathan of his name & sharing Abram #with Andrew as a “truth.” I don't think Neil would 'slip up' and accidentally call Andrew a nickname. I think if he WERE to want to call #Andrew by a nickname he would ask Andrew's permission first instead of thinking he could just “reassign” Andrew a new name/shorter name #Nora did say that Andrew wouldn't “hate” Drew but I don't think he would want to be called Drew all the time. His name is Andrew. It's not #my biggest ick when Neil occasionally calls Andrew “Drew” in Fic unless it becomes excessive and Neil NEVER calls Andrew by his actual #proper name. Now my own personal bias is I just don't like the nickname Drew for Andrew. I love the name Andrew it's one of my favourite #names (and not just b/c my husband is also named Andrew haha). And also b/c if I WERE to give Andrew a nickname I'd actually be very #selfish and give him the same nickname I use for my husband Andrew which is simply “An.” I just think it's prettier than Drew and also #shorter. Drew is cutting out the best part of the name Andrew and that is the An. But that is admittedly my own bias speaking.#AFTG #Andrew Minyard #All For the Game

this might be a controversial opinion but. i have seen the song “we’ll never have sex” by leith ross on one too many andreil playlists. in fact, i don’t think it should be on any andreil playlists. to be clear, this is not a judgement of the song itself. it’s a beautiful song, and i’ve been moved to tears while listening to it. however, that song features someone expressing their desire to engage in physical intimacy that is not building up to sex, and how appreciative they are that their partner is happy to do that. when people associate this song with andreil, i assume it’s in reference to andrew’s complicated relationship with sex and the patience with which neil is willing to navigate it. but the lyrics of the song are antithetical to canon in two major ways. first off, andrew is touch-averse, and doesn’t engage in much non-sexual physical intimacy (i know people have been making the case lately that he actually is tactile because he is sometimes tactile with neil….and no. to reference my goat @andrewminyard-josten again, andrew’s behavior toward neil cannot be used as metric for his general behavior, because neil is an exception to it. and even then, we do not see him asking neil to engage in non-sexual physical intimacy). second, it’s not that andrew doesn’t want to have sex, it’s that his trauma makes it difficult for him— which is a very important distinction. the beauty of him and neil’s relationship is that for the first time, he trusts someone enough to try to push his own boundaries, to work up to having sex in the way most people can. there’s a critical moment at the end of tkm when, upon learning the true extent of andrew's sexual trauma, neil asks how he can stand to do anything physical with him, and andrew, displeased to be having this conversation, explains that it's because he trusts neil to respect a "no." all this to say, i think in a scenario like the one this song evokes, aka neil reassuring andrew that their relationship would not be endangered if he never wanted to have sex, andrew would be genuinely offended. because like. yes. but that's not the case here. the best thing neil can (and does) do for andrew is to trust him to know his own desires, to treat him as the autonomous sexual being that he is.

#I have an Inbox question I need to answer regarding about whether I consider Andrew to be tactile (the short answer is no and I'll explain #further when I answer the Inbox question haha). We have very few instances of Andrew non-aggressively touching people in Canon #And those instances can be viewed as basically checking on another character's welfare. He is MOST tactile with Neil and then eventually #allows Neil to also touch him intimately. I've seen a few people describe Andrew as touch-starved and I kind of disagree with that #Because Andrew is most certainly touch-averse in most situations. He rejects hugs from Nicky & once he's off his medication he wants #to touch people even less - probably a combination of being off his meds & also being sexually assaulted by two different men as an adult #I also find it interesting when people say that Andrew 'doesn't do anything he doesn't want to do' b/c canonically Andrew DOES try #to push himself to be intimate with Neil when he places Neil's hand on his chest & Neil is the one to recognize that Andrew is pushing #himself past his boundaries and tells him 'I won't be like them I won't let you let me be like them.' Again I wouldn't describe this as #touch-starved because I don't think it's touch Andrew wants but to feel close with Neil - and Neil IS his exception - and he does want #sex with Neil although he's not quite ready yet (and Andrew definitely wouldn't have progressed as far with anyone else - i.e.#Roland)#In the EC Andrew becomes slightly more tactile with Neil - hand-holding and such but #he was also described as not a big hugger and I think there will still be days Andrew doesn't want that physical closeness or limited #physical closeness. Because trauma is complicated like that. I also find it a bit strange when Fic/Fanon has Neil reassuring Andrew #That he's beautiful/has Andrew be insecure about his appearance b/c Andrew's trauma definitely isn't related to insecurity about being #unattractive in fact I'd say it's the opposite. Adult men found Andrew “attractive” as a literal child. Now I DO think Andrew would enjoy #praise from Neil but not really about his physical appearance but more-so about characteristics Andrew actually values about himself #his strength his ability to protect Neil his control his composure how he brings Neil satisfaction & safety & happiness.#Anyway if anyone is interested when I work on my Fic 10:03 the song I listen to is Lifetime by Chris Grey #Andreil #Andrew Minyard #Neil Josten #AFTG #All For the Game #TFC #The Foxhole Court

I had so much fun discussing this Fic with you when you were working on it & I'm glad I could help #Once again recommending TTK's Andrew's 2nd POV Fic regarding all the times he & Neil could have said 'I love you' but didn't and #the two times they did. Such a good Fic on Andreil's relationship & the strength of their bond & how you don't actually need to say 'I #love you' to make it glaringly obvious you love someone/are devoted to them. TTK's portrayal of Andrew's thoughts are amazing!!#Also one of my favourite depictions of long-distance Andreil.

Have you read The Charioteer by Mary Renault? It’s my favorite from her. It’s not historical like most of her writing (well, it is NOW, but not when she wrote it) , but it’s so so soooo beautiful. I reread it pretty regularly.

This time I've tried to choose some older books from my shelves that maybe people aren't as familiar with.

The Last Herald Mage trilogy (Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise, Magic's Price) by Mercedes Lackey. I remember reading this book as an early teenager & the first book is the first time I remember legitimately sobbing at an ending. However! It does get better & I think does have a happy ending at the end - although admittedly this series does have a trope that I still dislike now as an adult, I would still recommend it! The series was written from 1989-1990.

The Nightrunner series specifically (Luck in the Shadows, Stalking Darkness, Traitor's Moon) by Lynn Flewelling. I read this again as an early teenager shortly after The Last Herald Mage trilogy. Originally published in 1996, the actual series is a lot longer than these three books - I can't remember if I actually continued reading & just didn't buy the books (I used to get a lot of books from the library as a child/teenager), or if I only read the first three. However! I do remember the first three being very fun and enjoyable, and perhaps I will re-read them & then continue with the series. More queer fantasy! 3. The Demon's Lexicon Trilogy by Sarah Rees Brennan. This is more 2000s YA, however, I really enjoyed this series as a teenager & remember it fondly. I think people who enjoy strong sibling relationships would like this series - and also perhaps for people who enjoy the T.V show Supernatural. The narrator does change for every book, which is also interesting! 4. Grief Lessons: Four Plays by Euripides translated by Anne Carson. I think I've mentioned before that I prefer tragedy over comedy. This translation also has one of the best prefaces I've seen and its introduction is: Why does tragedy exist? Because you are full of rage. Why are you full of rage? Because you are full of grief.

Hello, Achilles (and hello, Andrew Minyard). 5. The Jedi Apprentice series by Jude Watson. Reading these novels as a child is probably why Obi-Wan Kenobi is my favourite Star Wars character & also for a brief time I developed an obsession with Xanatos. I wouldn't consider myself the most knowledgeable Star Wars person, but I do know a lot of Obi-Wan Kenobi trivia (that at this point is probably retconned/outdated). Bonus mention for: Star Wars Revenge of the Sith novelization by Matthew Stover & Star Wars Phantom Menace novelization by Terry Brooks. 14. Do you ever mark/dog ear your own books? Yes! Not all my books. Particularly my classic books, plays & books of poetry. I did give my cousin my annotated copy of The Secret History by Donna Tartt as a gift. I've also been thinking of buying physical copies of AFTG so I can annotate them, as right now all my notes are just scribbled in a journal. The more I love a book, the more I love to mark it up, especially when I'm re-reading. I didn't always used to do this - when I was younger a lot of my books came from the library & then when I started buying books I had this idea that all my books needed to look pristine and perfect. Now, however, I love annotating books b/c I think it really adds to the experience. If you would like to see my answer for question 20 it is here!

Hi there!! Thanks so much for playing along with the Book Ask Game ^_^ 3. What is your favourite genre?

To be honest, I'm not sure if I have a favourite genre. Obviously, I enjoy queer lit. I enjoy literary novels, science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, romance, etc.,. I think any genre can be good, as long as the characters are complex & the plot is compelling.

6. What books have you read in the last month?

I'll list all the books I've read recently, although I don't quite know if they're "within" the month, but: A) The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (admittedly a re-read, although after about... 12 or so years). B) Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo (probably more like the month before last month but that's fine) C) The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System Volume 4 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu D) Dancing with the Lion: Becoming: The Story of Alexander the Great, before his rise by Dr. Jeanne Reames (and I will be reading the sequel shortly haha). E) Trolius and Cressida by William Shakespeare F) Oresteia by Aeschylus (in order to compare it to Orestes by Euripides & also admittedly a re-read). I also have The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin that my mother bought me & I've been meaning to read. As well as Don't Let the Forest In by C. G. Drews which was recommended to me on Tumblr to join my collection of beloved Andrews that I also hope to read soon.

I think if I did I would say Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. I read Twilight when I was a child - it was the first YA novel series that I read and became super invested in and started reading/writing Fanfic for, so I still admittedly have a soft spot for the series, particularly the first book (as well as the movies). 15. Recommend and review a book

Keeping with the Vampire theme, I'm going to recommend Let The Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Let the Right One In is originally a Swedish novel although it has been translated into English & other languages. The main characters are children: Oskar and the vampire Eli. The novel is rather dark and explores themes of child abuse (neglect, physical & sexual abuse), gender & sexuality, loneliness & love. I would say it has a happy ending! I remember first reading Let The Right One In probably... near the end of high school, so very long ago and I remember reading it at the beach, haha. I'm almost tempted to re-read it because I'm recommending it now and apparently there is a short story sequel that has been published. 20. What are things you look for in a book?

Complex characters that I find compelling! Intense & complicated relationships. An interesting plot. Admittedly, I tend to love series' because I love staying with characters for a long time & seeing their character growth and development, but there are also some stand alone novels. I tend to prefer novels that have darker themes and take the themes the writer is presenting seriously instead of downplaying them or holding back from actually delving into what they wish to explore. I prefer tragedies to comedies, although I love happy endings.

Sera!! Thank you for participating in the Ask Game haha!! 2. Top 5 Books of All Time? 1. The All for the Game series by Nora Sakavic! And I'm not just saying that because I'm an AFTG blog haha I genuinely do love AFTG. Admittedly: TFC, TRK, and TKM (the OG trilogy) is still my favourite, but Jean's books are also good! 2. Tian Guan Ci Fu/Heaven Official's Blessing by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. If someone was going to start reading danmei I would recommend TGCF. The plot is amazing, the love story between Hua Cheng/Xie Lian is beautiful, and I think everyone should start reading more Chinese literature. 3. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I know The Secret History is her more popular novel on Tumblr, however, I really recommend for those who enjoyed The Secret History or AFTG to give The Goldfinch a read. It's an amazing novel on grief, growing-up & learning to let go, abuse & the cycle of abuse, addiction, sexuality, and the codependent bond you form with your spiralling teenage bestie who you may also be in love with.

4. The Iliad by Homer. I've yet to read the translation by Emily Wilson although I hope to soon, as Fagles or Lattimore tended to be favoured when I was an undergrad. Sing, O Muses, on the (out)rage of Achilles. I love horrific explosions of furious grief and Achilles is the OG. * Honourable mention to Fire From Heaven by Mary Renault, which is a fictional novel about Alexander the Great & what inspired my first attempt to read the Iliad when I was... 12?? Approximately. Although admittedly I've read Dancing with the Lion: Becoming: The Story of Alexander the Great, before his rise recently by by Dr. Jeanne Reames and while I haven't read the sequel yet I am actually fonder of her portrayal of Alexander/Hephaestion so far compared to Renault. I know The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller is also popular on Tumblr - and I'm fond of it, as well, as I just re-read it recently after about... 11? 12? years - although there are perhaps a few major changes I would have made, it still has some very beautiful lines regarding Achilles/Patroclus and I love her depiction of Achilles and the build-up of Achilles/Patroclus from their childhood to teenage years. Moreover, Miller did successfully make their romance mainstream so despite some gripes I have with the novel I still love it. [In undergrad I actually wrote a comparison between The Iliad & The Song of Achilles and I'd actually love to find it and re-write it b/c although I received a decent mark it's probably terrible compared to what I'm capable of now].

5. Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo, which is a relatively new novel for this list as I read it only recently. However, I absolutely adore it & I think more people need to read it! It's Gothic Horror, and it's another wonderful exploration of grief, loss, codependent relationships, and coming to terms with your sexuality while being quite literally haunted by the ghost of "what could have been." I'm honestly surprised this novel isn't more popular than it is because it seems like a lot of people who are fans of AFTG, TRC, and other Tumblr-popular media such as Hannibal & Heated Rivalry would be into it! 11. What non-fiction books do you like if any?

I own a lot of history books. Most of them pertaining to Ancient Greece & the Hellenistic period, although some also on the Julio-Claudians. Some are textbooks, others biographies - ancient & modern - and some scholarly articles. I also have a lot of books/scholarly articles on social justice pedagogy. bell hooks, Paulo Freire, Audre Lorde, etc.,. as well as many scholarly articles I've printed off pertaining to imperialism, colonialism, propaganda, denial & ignorance.

Lastly, I have quite a few books pertaining to philosophy & from different philosophers across different cultures & periods in history. 19. Most disliked popular books?

Oof - I might be throwing myself under the bus with this one, but: The Hunger Games & The Divergent Series & The Maze Runner. I just don't really care about dystopian fiction to be honest. I finished the Hunger Games - and admittedly I did find The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes to be interesting - but THG never quite captured me as it has many other readers. The Divergent Series I remember reading in early high school and despising. And then admittedly I never bothered to read The Maze Runner after that.
