Of what use is it to discourse learnedly on the Trinity, if you lack humility and therefore displease the Trinity? Lofty words do not make a man just or holy; but a good life makes him dear to God. I would far rather feel contrition than be able to define it.

It is only the real presence of Christ in his mature people interspersed throughout the “secular” life of humanity that will cause the necessary “withering away of the state.” The state is emblematic of all those worldly power structures based on oppression and the power of pain and death.

Infinite and yet an infant. Eternal and yet born of a woman. Almighty, and yet nursing at a woman’s breast. Supporting a universe, and yet needing to be carried in a mother’s arms. Heir of all things, and yet the carpenter’s despised son.

Therefore, in faith in the risen Jesus, men already live in the midst of the transitory world of death from the powers of the new world of life that have dawned in him. There is already true life in the midst of false life, though only in communion with the one who had been crucified by that false life. ‘The future has already begun.’ Jesus’ resurrection already makes possible the impossible, namely reconciliation in the midst of strife, the law of grace in the midst of judgement, and creative love in the midst of legalism.

Discipleship is quite simply extended training in being dispossessed.

Spiritually, a man’s thoughts must be the building in which he lives - otherwise it’s wrong.
