A little over two years ago was when I first started working in the TV in film industry. My first ever PA gig was on a tier 3 feature replacing the Unit PA who got canned for a no call no show. I will never forget my very first day on a movie set. I had to report to location on Roosevelt Island at 4:30am with the Locations Manager who walked me over to a 24 foot cube truck, handed me the keys & told me I would be driving & maintaining it for the remainder of the month & change left of shooting on throughout the tri-state area 😮 I had never driven a U-haul before in my life, let alone a 24 footer production vehicle.. lol (special thanks to retired Teamster Robert Lisecki for showing me the ropes with that truck, or there’s no doubt I would have crashed). I initially thought I wanted to be a locations manager, traveling the world scouting locations for films but that quickly changed the very first time I stepped onto a hot set and saw a camera rehearsal being performed. I was absolutely mesmerized, and in that moment I knew that I needed to figure out whatever it was I needed to do that was going to get me into the camera department! Today I was incredibly pleased to learn that I’ve PASSED my exam to join local 600 as a camera assistant and I can’t remember a time I’ve been this fulfilled / had such a sense of purpose. This is something I’ve dreamed about daily over the last two years, and for the first time in a long time I have a plan & it’s working out. Thank you so so much to all of the wonderful people across all departments I’ve had the pleasure to work with over the last two years who have helped shape my experience into what it is today, you know who you are! Special thanks to all the 600 members I’ve met in the field who took the time to answer my questions and drop gems on me that I will carry on with me for the rest of my career. Last but certainly not least, MAJOR shoutout to the Mayor’s office, Brooklyn Workforce Innovations & the ‘Made In NY’ program for believing in me & getting me started in this industry because I would most likely be a public school teacher right now if it wasn’t for them.
