Even the way Andrew answered to being a criminal suspect was impressively casual. Terry only stated what he did in order to invoke a reaction but when an unusual one was provided, he deduced that he probably couldâve accused the boy of murdering someone and heâd be given an equally unperturbed response. It wasnât exactly the response he was hoping for, but he would have to remember to expect erratic results when conversing with him. âI wouldnât bet against you just yet, but to be honest, I was just prodding,â he finally let out. âSo far, you lack the blossoming sociopathic symptoms. I could be wrong later down the line.â
After a short survey of the maleâs face, he decided on looking back at the television. It seemed like today was the day of grieving, both for the humans and the superhumans. Lovely. He was in mid eye-roll when the boy said his name, causing him to immediately shoot him a rather shocked expression. âThe pariahâŚIâve heard about you. Iâm Terry.â His voice lacked its usual peppiness, an observation that shocked even himself. Perhaps he spoke too quickly, forgetting to add in actual depth to his words. He had to remind himself of that, lest he end up sounding like a drone. No one liked talking to a robot.
"Pfft, you can identify sociopaths? Is that your power?" Andrew quipped. "Sociopaths wear human masks, you know?" he added, taking a brief look at his skateboard. It needed some tending to. A piece of gum was stuck to one of the wheels. Andrew's face lost color for a second. "How disguising," he thought. Luckily, it was dried up. He placed it back down on the ground, sighing to himself. "But yeah, I might be one; the humans think we all are anyways."
"Pariah? That's a new one," he chuckled. Yeah, it was no news to Andrew that he was hated for his blunt outlook on life. That just meant that he wouldn't get dates anytime soon. Andrew nodded his head. Terry's tone dropped. Perhaps tiredness? Andrew hoped he wasn't boring or annoying. He would have to give up his seat if someone more interesting and likable came by. "Yeah, the actual superhero," he said, remembering Terry's social position. He glanced at the television; they moved onto weather. At least it wasn't berating superhumans again.
"Why isn't there a superhuman news channel? I heard one of the girls at WRAL has Electrokinesis. A blackout happened on air because she sneezed too hard," he explained, chuckling at the mere image. There was his attempt at being...likable?
Johanna took off her sunglasses and pursed her lips. She fixed her gaze on the stranger with her piercing eyes. The young male standing before her had shaggy hair spilling out from under a beanie, brown skin, and some facial hair. Once getting over the unkempt hair and the ugly hat, he was actually kind of cute. In a puppy dog way, which made Johanna usually sick to her stomach. âThen read my lips, skater boy.â She snapped as she leaned forward. âGet. Out. Of. My. Way. Iâm trying to soak up some sun rays here.â Johanna huffed, putting her sunglasses back on. âAlone.â She quickly added before leaning back into her position.Â
Oh, she paused on each word. She was stern about him being in "her" sunlight. "That's no fun," Andrew said, walking over to the other lawn chair. He placed his skateboard in between the both of them and laid down on the chair. "I think I ought to join you; no need for me to get all pale from the fluorescents," he taunted, stretching his long limbs. He peered up at the clouds, chuckling devilishly.
Johanna heaved a restless sigh, shifting her weight against the patio bench. It was a bright and sunny day at Arcadia Academy. The blistering sun was high up in the sky. The grounds of the school was quiet, for once. Lounging outside behind the schoolâs building, soaking up some sun rays, Johanna believed that today was a perfect day. With her black Chanel Cat-eye Retro sunglasses on and her pink Beats in-ear headphones playing Rihannaâs Birthday Cake, it most certainly was a perfect day for the haughty girl. She tilted her head back, resting comfortably in her seat. She began to mouth the words to the song, knowing the lyrics to it by heart.Â
Suddenly a shadow cast over her, blocking the sun off of her. She pursed her lips in disapproval. Johanna cleared her throat. âUh, excuse you. Youâre standing in my sunlight. Remove yourself now, annoying person. Thank you.â She squinted, waving her hand at whoever it was in her way. Â
Class was over, thus it was time to go back to the crib and get some food. Andrew, via his usual mode of transportation (skating), made his way across the cement walkways of Arcadia. He expertly weaved around many students, even jumped over one who crouched just to get in his way. As he kept going, he bobbed his head to the harsh melodies of "Satori Part 1" by Flower Travellin' Band. That whole album was outstanding. It had the right balance of hardcore and uniqueness to earn the band their permanent spot in Andrew's playlists.
He stopped midway. His hair began to get into his face; he needed to readjust his beanie. Also, he saw some girl shooing people away bitterly. He decided that he wanted to torment her. Andrew knew exactly who it was. The resident queen of mean herself, Johanna Rivera. Andrew stood in her way, letting the song come to an end. As it did, he took off his headphones and cast a confused look. "Sorry. I didn't hear that," he taunted, chuckling after his statement.

There was something about the boy that struck the wrong chord within the symphony of perceptions that occurred during each encounter Terry had. It wasnât that he was a bad person. The contrary could be an opinion heâd don after further exposure, even, but for now, he wasnât exactly the seniorâs favorite student. He was much too personal at first encounter. âAfter the disturbance that resulted in the second destruction of the Manhattan area as well as the almost complete obliteration of an island not too far away, the murdering of about fifty people in a Wal-mart, the raiding of a mall, the general mass murder of humans, and the unpaid damages to half of the upper east coast, yes. Canât really blame him for not wanting a repeat of all of that.â he responded crassly, irises following each car as they drove off the lot at the end of the Allstate commercial.
George Brennan appeared on the screen following the car commercial and the politicianâs voice triggered a scowl to briefly appear on face. Political talk about the president and other people on his side were one thing, seeing as how they did away with a lot of laws oppressing superhumans, but men like Brennan were an entirely different subject. He remembered reading an article in which he helped a girl with Enhanced Synesthesia get a scholarship into Yale. Wonderful news, he thought, until he read a separate article about him personally âdealingâ with troubled superhuman youth in his city while acting as itâs mayor. In what world is one superhumanâs life worth more than another?
As Andrew weighed the costs and benefits of what each of his fellow students had to offer, Terry made a mental note of his final decision and the price he was willing to put into the pool. âConsidering what said individual would have to do in order to replicate the damage dealt by Mr. Ashton, I could honestly say it wouldnât be Rosaline or Audra. Iâd have to put my money on you.â His voice was unwavering as he turned to return the look he knew would follow such an accusation. âYouâre the only person in this room I donât know anything about.â
"Me?" Andrew gave him a chuckle, before turning his head back to the television. They were on about the weather. More heat at the beach, thus more people touring the beach and sampling the ocean. Andrew processed Terry's words. "Maybe. Who knows? I might be the next public enemy," he somewhat joked, but he thought about it. He had no intentions to. But what made Lance do what he did? Did he really just wake up angry at the world?
A news report about a female superhuman being shot and killed came up on screen. For once, it was sympathetic. A poor child was shot dead on the outskirts of San Diego. Just to think, there used to be a school out there. Andrew looked around to the onlookers; some were agitated, some were heartbroken. Andrew politely turned the channel.
"Andrew, by the way," he said justly.

With the image of the accused murderer no longer on the screen, the image of the reporter finally surfaced on the screen. Her race was indeterminate by mere appearance, but an edited ribbon displaying Julia Rivera stretched along her collarbone. âWith an increase of superhuman crime, thereâs no telling how long before we end up in yet another war,â she finished. Her eyebrows had narrowed, lips thinned, and cheeks turned shallow, expressing what Terry came to read as both judgmental and embittered.
Another voice sounded behind him, and Terryâs head tilted exactly 30 degrees to the left, allowing him to identify the boy whom it belonged to without having to do a full turn. After the boyâs appearance sparked no jolt to his immediate memory, he returned his gaze to the tv, which now was showing a commercial for car insurance. âA crimeâs a crime unless itâs done by a superhuman, then itâs a stepping stone in our terrorist agenda,â he retorted. âAnd itâs not garbage. Prejudiced or not, the news is still our only source of information about the outside.â
A muffled laugh escaped Terry as the male moved around to take a seat on the couch. He quickly moved his hands, which were outstretched at his sides, to sit against the exposed couch satin between his thighs. He hadnât realized how valuable that motion was until the rough surface of the boyâs skateboard made contact with his elbow. âAs far as theyâre concerned, this school is doing just that. It wouldnât be too far-fetched,â he babbled, eyes never once directing their attention away from the screen. âPretty sure one of you lucky superhumans is gonna go down in history for 'Lancing' up the place. Wanna take bets now while weâre still able?â
"Another war? Ha," Andrew let free a mocking guffaw as Julia Rivera spoke. "Did a superhuman steal her husband or something?" Andrew crudely remarked, "We're hot, but damn she is bitter about something; can't put my finger on it," he added, continuing to belittle a woman who couldn't even hear him. Maybe she did, the media has eyes everywhere. Andrew crossed his arms over his Black Sabbath t-shirt. "And last time I checked, didn't Masters start the war with us?" he asked, cocking an eyebrow. His memory of the events were kinda faded. He managed to avoid it for the most part.
Though his words were not towards anyone in particular. He was speaking his mind. Something he became notorious for. The cars were nice on this commercial. It is ironic, considering that most cars that insurances deal with were totaled. "Terrorist agenda? Yeah, we're all a fuckin' hivemind, waiting for our leader to tell us our mission. Honestly, if we were all together, do you think humans would even exist?"
The next commercial was on some presidential matter. Another ironic moment. Andrew would believe networks timed these damn commercials. Of course Fox News would broadcast political commercials involving the Nazis--Republicans. George Brennan: another stiff walking, fake smiling, baby kissing, cock (figuratively, Andrew hoped) sucking man who would turn on America in a heartbeat. Funny thing is that Jason Masters was an Independent prez.
"Dude, I'm going with the vamp chick in Senior class. One look in those eyes of yours and you're under her control," she started to explain. He looked around him, jokingly. "Like I shouldn't say much, one of these dudes might be bangin' her already. He's trapped for life!" He snickered at his own antics. "But seriously, I think the redhead might doom us all. We're by a fuckin' ocean. She'd drown us all on accident; we don't get badass deaths like those peeps up north," he concluded. "So I got fifty on her. You, brotha?" he asked, turning his head slightly to Terry, keeping his eye on the Taco Bell commercial. It made him hungry.

The largest of the flat screen televisions in the common room flickered on and was immediately turned to the news channel. It displayed the mugshot of a Caucasian man with wild hair and a smug appearing smile adorning his face. His left eyelid was puffier than the rest, most likely a result of some sort of physical altercation. The headline read 'Another day, another superhuman terrorist'. Beside the mugshot was a list of crimes that the man had been arrested for: manslaughter and resisting arrest.
The voice of a female reporter echoed in the background. âThis just goes to prove that superhumans arenât trying as hard as theyâre leading us to believe they are. They donât want to assimilate. They are taking advantage of our patience and Iâm sorry but that patience is running thinâŚâ
"Wow, rude," the boy sitting on the couch uttered, repulsed. He crinkled the bridge of his nose, pointing the remote and turned down the volume as the woman continued on her tangent. Anything and everything a superhuman did just had to be more proof that they werenât meant for society. The very human marine who decided heâd murder his wife in Onslow county didnât even make the news, let alone get the attention of anyone of power. It just wasnât quality news unless it something that could be used against the superhuman race. "Remind me not to sneeze near a human. Wouldnât want to get charged with public endangerment."
How pitiful. The woman was so vehement towards the "culprit". Did he look that vicious? His face was battered; hints of blood was on his face. The police tired to clean him up, at the very least. But his jaw was knocked out of socket. Luckily, he had his superhuman durability to help soften the injury. If he was normal, the beating that he probably suffered from would have probably killed him. Pfft, a perk of being a superhuman.
The sounds of Converses echoed along with the pretentious human's. "Lance, Magnus, how many more superhumans do we have to suffer through until we have another man like Jason Masters step up? We want to believe that they change but they keep doing things like this?" A teenage male snickered at her words. He leaned over the couch, picking up the remote in his hands. He bounced in between his hands.
"Fox News, huh?" he said, eyeing Terry. "Yeah, she didn't say 'shit' about the guy that killed some kids, but they're talking 'bout some guy that accidentally shot someone with electricity," he explained, giving another look to the biter woman on the television. "Don't fill your mind with this garbage, bro," he said, walking around to the couch. He took a seat and brought his skateboard to his lap. "By the way, sneeze on a superhuman, they'll charge you with treason. Trying to spread the superhuman 'virus'," he quipped. "Trying to start another superhuman army," he added quickly.
"Fuckin' idiots," he angrily murmured.
