huge carrot recall affecting canada and the united states, including puerto rico, due to shiga toxin-producing e. coli
november 16, 2024

this recall may expand. see below for details.
Grimmway Farms has issued a recall of select organic whole carrots and organic baby carrots that should no longer be in grocery stores but may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers.
These products may have been contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) O121:H19. E. coli O121:H19 is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system. Some infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea conditions, such as a hemolytic uremic syndrome, or the development of high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and neurologic problems. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting. The incubation period for E. coli O121:H19 in humans can range from 24 hours to as much as ten days. The average incubation period is 3 to 4 days.
The following recalled products were shipped directly to retail distribution centers nationwide in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada:

formatting on tumblr is difficult, please see the FDA outbreak investigation page for the affected ranges of best-by dates for baby carrots, and pictures of the affected carrots.
as of time of posting, the main FDA recall page and the CDC investigation page have an error and do not list Kroger or LIDL baby carrots, while the FDA outbreak investigation page does. I am assuming that this means they are part of the recall and that this error will probably be fixed soon.
the recalled carrots are thought to be associated with an E. coli O121:H19 outbreak. 39 illnesses, 15 hospitalizations, and one death have been linked to this outbreak so far.
as always, these numbers are expected to be lower than the true number of illnesses and deaths, and will likely rise. not everyone seeks medical attention, and even when all testing and reporting procedures go as smoothly as possible, it can take weeks to officially link an illness to an outbreak.
Page describes an outbreak of E. coli linked to organic carrots.
Do not eat or serve multiple brands of recalled bagged organic whole and baby carrots supplied by Grimmway Farms. FDA’s investigation is ong
noteworthy from the FDA investigation page:
FDA is working with the firm to determine the source of contamination and whether additional products are affected. This advisory will be updated as information becomes available.
in short, there is a possibility this contamination may affect more than just the recalled carrots. keep up to date with these pages to stay on top of this outbreak.
the recalled carrots are no longer on shelves. but if they are in your fridge or freezer, destroy or discard them and clean anything they may have touched.
do NOT eat these carrots! this strain of e. coli is dangerous and at least one person has died.
if you think you got sick in relation to this outbreak, please seek medical attention, even if just to get your illness officially associated with this outbreak.

and now some answers to some relevant questions.
I bought carrots today, are they part of this recall?
by the time you saw this on tumblr, the recalled carrots were no longer being sold. as of this post, the recall has not expanded to include anything other than what is listed here, but it may expand in the future.
I bought non-organic carrots, are they part of the recall?
no, or at least not at this time. see above.
how did e. coli contaminate the carrots?
e. coli is transmitted through feces. poop with e. coli in it probably contaminated the water, manure, or compost used to grow the carrots. usually from cows.
are the contaminated carrots safe to eat if frozen first?
no.
are the contaminated carrots safe to eat if washed first?
no.
is it a good idea to put the contaminated carrots (or anything else contaminated with shiga toxin-producing e. coli) in my compost?
no, that is exactly how vegetables can get contaminated with e. coli in the first place.
is it safe to give the contaminated carrots to pets?
no, pets can get e. coli, and then contaminate wherever they poop with e. coli.
are the contaminated carrots safe to eat if you cook them?
you really do not want to be taking risks with shiga toxin-producing strains of e. coli. it can make you shit blood and can seriously damage your organs, it can contaminate anything it touches (cutting board, knife, fridge, etc), and treatment is limited. the FDA or CFIA will sometimes say a contaminated/recalled food is relatively safe to eat as long as you cook it thoroughly, but both the FDA and CFIA recommend not cooking with these carrots at all.
is e. coli contagious?
yes. through poop. if you get e. coli, make sure you wash your hands as well as possible with soap after going to the bathroom, and consider using a different bathroom than everyone else in your household if you have access to more than one bathroom. it is not rare for someone taking care of or living with someone else with e. coli to become infected.
can I get a refund?
contact the store you bought the carrots from to find out.
why does it seem like there is a new recall every month in the united states and/or canada?
actually, there are new recalls nearly every day around here. wherever you live, please consider keeping up with wherever your local recalls are announced. you can often sign up for e-mail alerts.
recalls for the united states
recalls for canada
search "recalls [country]" to find recalls for your country.
if I have a connective tissue disorder (ehlers-danlos syndrome, marfan syndrome, loeys-dietz syndrome, etc), what is the class of antibiotics I should avoid?
fluoroquinolones.
I hope that helps clear some things up! stay safe!
minor expansion of organic carrot recall, involving a correction to previously listed bag sizes.
the previous public lists of carrot bag sizes were incorrect. retailers were told the correct list, but the recall announcement was missing:
bunny luv 50 lb bags
cal-organic 15 lb and 50 lb bags
good & gather 1 lb bags
of whole carrots which are being recalled.
additionally, there has been a recall of whole foods market 15 oz organic carrot sticks, and whole foods market 15 oz organic carrots and celery packs sold in AZ, CA, HI, ID, NV with best if sold by dates of 9/1/24 to 10/19/24.
the US deli meat recall has expanded 35 times over, going from 200,000 pounds to 7 MILLION pounds of meat and poultry recalled due to listeria contamination.
if you checked your fridge before, check it again with the new list, there are over 70 products being recalled!
this recall of boar's head products now includes old country branded products. some were also exported to the cayman islands, dominican republic, mexico, and panama.
please note, people have died from this outbreak, dozens of people have been hospitalized, and since listeria can take months to kick someone's ass after exposure and then a while to be investigated and recorded by the government, these numbers are expected to rise. you do not need to have eaten meat or poultry to be exposed to listeria from this outbreak, you could have just eaten food that has come in contact with it like in a kitchen, deli, restaurant, or anywhere else these meats were used to prepare food. listeria is a nasty fucker that loves to contaminate whatever it touches. there is more information on listeriosis and high-risk groups further down this post.
announced july 30th, 2024, current as of july 31st, 2024. this is not a complete copy/paste of the announcement or all relevant information, please check the links for more complete information and updates from the government.
WASHINGTON, July 30, 2024 – Boar's Head Provisions Co., Inc., a Jarratt, Va., establishment, is expanding its July 26, 2024, recall of deli meat products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The establishment is recalling approximately 7 million additional pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. Whole genome sequencing results show that a liverwurst sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes.
This expansion includes 71 products produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024, under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names. These items include meat intended for slicing at retail delis as well as some packaged meat and poultry products sold at retail locations. These products have “sell by” dates ranging from 29-JUL-2024 through 17-OCT-24. View full product list. View labels.
The products subject to recall were distributed to retail locations nationwide and some were exported to the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama. The products shipped to retailers bear establishment number “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels.
most people exposed to listeria will not experience a serious infection. but listeriosis, the illness caused by listeria, can become pretty bad and can take weeks to show symptoms after exposure. listeriosis can cause lifelong disability or death. for people who are pregnant, listeriosis can cause stillbirths, miscarriages, premature births, and life-threatening infections in newborns.
say you ate a bad deli meat sandwich a week ago, or any food that may have come into contact with these deli meats, and you theoretically got exposed to listeria with an immune system not strong enough to fight it off. it could be weeks or even months before listeriosis starts affecting you. consider writing down what you ate, and where, and when, just in case you need to tell this to a medical provider in the future. if you do develop listeriosis, it may become difficult to remember these details later.
if your hypothetical sandwich (or whatever you ate involving the recalled products) had been thoroughly cooked, it may have killed off the listeria. listeria is killed with heat, which is why deli meats are suseptible to listeria contamination.
this is a type of contamination so serious and easily spread that entire delis are going to be shut down to be thoroughly cleaned. if you had these products in your kitchen, even if you cooked them before eating, the united states food safety and inspection service recommends deep cleaning your fridge to stay safe. consider what else may have come into contact with the contaminated food.
as a reminder, having previously been infected by covid-19 is one of the many things that can cause a weakened immune system, and many people with weakened immune systems do not know they have weakened immune systems until they get infected with something serious. you can temporarily have a weakened immune system just from a lot of stress or not getting enough sleep, so make sure you get plenty of rest if you are concerned. good quality rest makes the immune system stronger.
Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or with weakened immune systems. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected.
Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In people who are pregnant, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections can occur in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food. (rune note: emphasis mine)
FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators and in retail deli cases. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and retailers are urged not to sell these products with the referenced sell by dates. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Consumers who have purchased these products are also urged to clean refrigerators thoroughly to prevent the risk of cross-contamination.
FSIS recommends retail delis clean and sanitize all food and non-food surfaces and discard any open meats and cheeses in the deli. Retailers may refer to FSIS’ guideline, Best Practices Guidance for Controlling Listeria monocytogenes in Retail Delicatessens, for information on steps to prevent certain ready-to-eat foods that are prepared or sliced in retail delis and consumed in the home, such as deli meats and deli salads, from becoming contaminated with L. monocytogenes.
the wikipedia page for listeriosis notes: “Listeriosis may cause mild, self-limiting gastroenteritis and fever in anyone.” and “People who were previously healthy but were exposed to a very large dose of Listeria can develop a noninvasive illness in which the bacteria do not spread into their bloodstream or other body sites. Symptoms can include diarrhea and fever.”
and here is the united states center for disease control page on this outbreak.

as of the time this post is going up, the CDC page has not yet been updated with the latest recall information, and reflects the previous, smaller recall.
list of all affected product names under the cut. check the product information list for more information on each product and where they were exported, and here is what the labels look like.
this list is long.
do not risk this. do not mess with listeria. do not eat these recalled foods!
I did this on my phone while recovering from medical treatment, so please let me know if the formatting came out wrong.

if you are a high-risk group and have eaten these foods or anything that may have come into contact with them, breathe. get a lot of rest and pay attention to your body over the coming weeks and months, and figure out where you can go to get medical care in case you start showing signs of infection.
the united states centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) reports another person has been confirmed dead as a result of this outbreak, and there have been 10 new confirmed hospitalizations. even in the best of circumstances where all information is available and everyone participates in the investigation from the start, it takes up to a month for illnesses and deaths to become officially associated with an outbreak. and it can take weeks after exposure for listeria to cause illness to begin with. the number of people infected as a result of this contaminated meat is expected to rise.
if you are in a high-risk group and believe you have been exposed to listeria as a result of this outbreak, especially if you have eaten a lot of these products lately, consider reaching out to your healthcare provider even if you have not shown signs of illness yet. they may choose to prescribe you antibiotics to help keep you safe.
The CDC says this is the largest listeriosis outbreak since 2011.
CBS news requested and received USDA's food safety inspection service records for the factory where the recalled meat was produced.
there have been 69 noncompliances (violations, basically), including mold buildup, mildew, leaks, ample amounts of blood on the floor, insects and...
"heavy meat buildup" on the walls.
since the last CDC investigation update on august 8th, 6 more deaths have been attributed to this listeria contamination, with 57 total hospitalizations. CBS news calls this the largest listeria outbreak in the united states in 13 years.
Learn about a Listeria outbreak linked to meats sliced at delis.
the US CDC continues to report that the number of deaths, illnesses, and hospitalizations are expected to rise, especially since many of the meats have sell by dates into october 2024 and may still be in people's refrigerators. and then it can take months for listeria exposure to cause illness, and then several more weeks for diagnosed, reported, and investigated cases to become associated with the outbreak. not every illness or death from this outbreak will get diagnosed, reported, or investigated.
you can read the full list of the boar's head factory violations here.
might not want to read it while nauseous or eating. tag your favorite lines!
“Meat overspray on walls and large pieces of meat on the floor behind line. Meat build up on the power cords of line 2. The floor scales at the end on lines 1 and 2 had large pieces of meat and trash in them, with an appearance of an odor. The polar catwalk had pieces of meat and fat in the support braces and plastic floor pieces. All of the polar electrical control boxes had meat and fat build on the bottom. All polar legs and framework had meat and fat build up on them. 1 metal polar vat had meat and fat particles in the tube that connects it to the polars. The 2 polars closest to netted hams department had meat/fat build up in the vacuum ports on the bottom.”
this is not even half of the very non-meat places that were described to be covered in meat
“I went into the the Raw Receiving cooler. | observed multiple combos in which were saturated, there were ample amounts of blood in puddles on the floor, and on the rack that were heavily soiled to the point they appeared to leak at a steady pace. There was also a rancid smell in the cooler.”
...
“Upon entering the pickle vat pump out room approximately 15-20 flies were observed going in and out of the 4 vats of pickle left in the room. Small flying gnat like insects were observed crawling on the walls and flying around the room. The rooms walls had heavy meat buildup, pink/orange discoloration, and denaturant over spray on them.”
yeah just spray over the meat oozing off of the gnat-covered walls. good enough.
...
“The inedible room also had a presence of flying insects. The room also had multiple instances of meat/ meat product on the floor, as well as trash. The cure cooler man door in the back right corner of the room insects were observed. 7 ladybugs, 1 beetle like insect, and 1 cockroach like insect.”
I appreciate the humbleness of not wanting to explicitly identify a beetle as a beetle, just in case it might not be a beetle.
all emphasis mine.
does anyone here know about how this all compares to factories that get shut down before people die?
This page explains the recall and provides information, answers to frequently asked questions, and links to resources.
as a result of this outbreak, boar's head is permanently discontinuing liverwurst as a product and shutting down the plant that accumulated meat buildup, bugs, mold, and blood.
they also claim to be ramping up their quality control and safety, which is not very convincing considering how much disgusting shit was in the reports.
they knew the factories were disgusting and waited until after people died to do anything about it. these reports are pointless unless anyone is willing to act on them before people die.
despite the change involved in hiring new people, I am not seeing any mention of firing anyone involved with the decisions to keep the plants open and knowingly manufacture food in disgusting conditions.
the CDC has announced that the deadly boar's head outbreak of listeria has been declared over. boar's head is currently under criminal investigation in relation to this outbreak.
at least sixty people were hospitalized, and at least ten people died.
foodsafetynews received this letter from the widow of someone who died from eating boar's head meat. it is not an easy read. but listeria is serious, food poisoning as a whole needs to be taken more seriously, and there needs to be better regulation of food so people can stop needlessly getting sick and dying.

a lot of people think of food poisoning as just a little diarrhea. I have seen so many people say as much on my posts about food poisoning, recalls, and foodborne illness outbreaks. I have seen more people than I would like downplay the seriousness of even deadly outbreaks.
make no mistake: even food poisoning which does not hospitalize you can cause a lifetime of disability.
food poisoning is not just "the shits". food poisoning is poison. there are so many different types of food poisoning. and a bunch of them can be life-changing in the worst possible way.
you do not want food poisoning to change your life. even if you have had food poisoning a million times and have recovered just fine, the next time you get it you might not be so lucky.
are you tired? are you sleeping enough? are you stressed? have you ever gotten covid-19? do you have a cold? have you been exercising enough recently? have you been eating enough fruits, vegetables, protein, and fiber? do you have a vitamin deficiency? do you have a chronic illness, or a bodily 'quirk' that runs in the family that raises your risk of developing certain medical conditions?
all of these and so many more can damage your immune system. a relatively minor illness during a stressful part of your life can do major damage even if you would have otherwise recovered peacefully. and if you are not at the top of your game when you get sick, that illness may never full leave you.
keep your body as strong as it can be, and keep your mind as informed as it can be about how to avoid food poisoning and outbreaks of foodborne illness.
find out how to keep up with recalls and foodborne illnesses outbreaks near you.
The FDA sent a warning letter flagging "significant violations" of manufacturing regulations for Tom's of Maine toothpaste.
on november 19, 2024 the united states food and drug administration (FDA) published a warning letter written earlier in the month to tom's of maine for being fucking disgusting and not adequately responding to accusations of being fucking disgusting. the FDA found black mold-like substances growing around production equipment as well as water contaminated with disease-causing bacteria.
that contaminated water was used both for cleaning equipment and as an ingredient in toothpaste.
here are some snippets from the FDA letter.
Your firm produced (b)(4) water and used it as a component in your OTC drug products and as a final rinse after equipment cleaning.
A. You recovered Pseudomonas aeruginosa in multiple (b)(4) water samples, from June 2021 to October 2022. This water was used to manufacture Tom’s Simply White Clean Mint Paste, batch (b)(4), and for the final rinse of numerous equipment cleaning processes. None of these incidents were investigated to assess product impact and water system performance.
B. You also reported multiple incidents where too numerous to count (TNTC) Ralstonia insidiosa was recovered from water points of use. Your investigations included testing of new samples collected at least 4 days after the initial sampling. Batches manufactured after these incidents were released based on the microbial testing of the finished OTC product despite the quality of the water used as a component or to clean the equipment.
C. You recovered gram-negative cocco-bacilli Paracoccus yeei in your OTC finished product, Wicked Cool! Anticavity Toothpaste, batch 3025UST11B. Your investigation concluded, without sufficient justification, that the growth was due to sample contamination. The batch was released based on retest results.
...
Your complaint procedure is inadequate because not all quality related issues are investigated.
...
For example, approximately 400 complaints related to odor, color, and taste in your toothpaste products, including those for children, were not investigated. These complaints are not investigated because your procedure requires an investigation only if a trend is identified.
and they ignored HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS, AT LEAST. including in products meant for children!
and most importantly, despite how many details are in the FDA warning letter, it explicitly states the list of violations is not comprehensive. this is not everything tom's of maine has fucked up, ignored, or blatantly tried to sweep under the rug.
you can find the whole FDA warning letter here.
you may note in the CBS article that tom's of maine basically said they investigated themselves and found nothing wrong using their own investigation process. considering their investigation process itself is under scrutiny by the FDA, take their response with a grain of salt.
if you use tom's of maine toothpaste, you might want to consider using something else, especially if your immune system is not the best. the FDA letter is pretty damning. these are choices that were made on purpose to prioritize profit over safety. I am definitely going to think twice before buying anything from them from now on.
tom's of maine is owned by colgate-palmolive.
this is not a recall. tom's of maine products potentially made using contaminated water, including those aimed at children, remain on shelves.
I think the worst part of this is, tom's of maine tends to be the go-to toothpaste brand for people with all kinds of medical conditions, disabilities, and problems with other brands of toothpaste. they know this. tom's of maine tries to market itself as clean and safe.
and yet their official policies purposely disregard complaints made even about children's products.
tom's of maine claims they prioritize reports of adverse effects, but what parent is going to even think to consider that toothpaste might be making their child sick? the amount of effort it takes from patients, families, and doctors to even reach the point of being able to solidly blame a toothpaste is way more than you might think it is, because who the fuck is going to test for those specific strains of bacteria when someone gets sick?
even in adults who eventually realize a certain toothpaste makes them sick for one reason or another, it can take years of ruling other things out. it can take even longer if not every single tube of toothpaste makes someone unwell, like in cases with contamination.
children get sick all the time. chronically ill people have flares all the time. when someone gets sick or feels a little more unwell than usual without apparent cause, very few doctors are going to run panels for obscure bacteria. and when children complain that their toothpaste tastes bad, or that it makes them feel unwell, parents usually chalk it up to kids just not wanting to go to school or brush their teeth.
and that is what tom's of maine bets on, that nobody is going to be able to solidly pin down illnesses on the toothpaste. and that is how they justify ignoring hundreds of complaints, even though they know that one of their top ingredients is contaminated water.
also worth noting, and the FDA pointed this out: even when contamination was blatantly found in their toothpaste, tom's of maine arbitrarily declared that the contamination results were fake and that the test itself had somehow been contaminated. this is more than just shoving their heads in the sand. tom's of maine is building a fucking cave system down there
if you have made purchases within the past several weeks on https://goodsmileus.com/, the figure website, you are going to want to monitor whatever payment method you used. word is going around that goodsmile's payment system was compromised in some way and bad actors have been stealing and using people's card information throughout the past month or so.
goodsmile has not been transparent about whatever the fuck happened, but they have allegedly changed their payment system somehow in the past few days. maybe they are still compromised in some way, maybe they are not, but if you have bought from goodsmileus in the past several weeks: keep an eye out. a lot of people are reporting charges from uber and uber eats specifically or having their card added to someone else's paypal account.
so either goodsmile is not able to tell when their systems have been compromised for weeks at a time (REAL BAD), or they knew about it and did nothing (REAL BAD), or they are complicit in whatever is happening (REAL BAD)
One of the things that just pisses me off about the victory of COVID normalization is the way it convinced all kinds of people to conflate "taking reasonable preventative action" with "freaking out". Using information about the world to create and execute plans to mitigate risk is not an emotional state. And it can be a good idea!
this is the opening paragraph of a news article. stop scrolling here, if you would.

make a guess. make three guesses. make five guesses.

this is an article about...
potatoes.
more specifically
the united states potato cartel
apparently, mccain foods, cavendish farms, lamb weston, and j.r. simplot have been conspiring with each other to keep the prices of frozen potato-based products like frozen fries, frozen hash browns, and frozen tater tots high in the US for years.
these four companies collectively control 98% of the frozen potato product supply in the united states, so they can easily pressure the entire market. they are working together to squeeze as much money out of the frozen potato market as possible, sometimes even instructing employees to avoid making paper trails about their activities.
so now two proposed class action lawsuits have been filed against prolific potato providers for prioritizing profit and persistently producing problematic potato product price practices.
you can read the whole article here, and nightmares of capitalism aside, I do have a favorite part of this story.
there is a national potato council.
and it turns out the national potato council has a national potato expo.
here is a highlight video from potato expo 2019. it looks like it was a fun time!

I have been reading over the past few weeks food safety type people talking about how bad it would be if e. coli actually got in burger patties (in the context of the McDonald's e. coli outbreak) and what do you fucking know
recall of ground beef products sent to restaurants in the united states due to shiga toxin-producing e. coli
WASHINGTON, Nov. 20, 2024 – Wolverine Packing Co., a Detroit, Mich. establishment, is recalling approximately 167,277 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
The fresh products have a “use by” date of 11/14/2024 and the frozen products are labeled with production date 10 22 24. View full product list. View labels.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 2574B” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to restaurant locations nationwide.
emphasis mine.
so far, 15 illnesses have been linked to this. all of them from minnesota.
as always, this number is expected to be lower than the true number of people who have gotten sick. so do not assume that only people in minnesota got sick or at risk, because the recalled beef was shipped around the country.
Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider. E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2–8 days (3–4 days, on average) after exposure the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
FSIS is concerned that some product may be in restaurant refrigerators or freezers. Restaurants are urged not to serve these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
emphasis mine. it can take more than a week after eating food contaminated with e. coli to get sick. reminder as always, even if someone goes to a doctor the second they feel ill, it can take weeks for a case of foodborne illness to get officially associated with any given cluster of illness from food contamination. and not everyone seeks medical attention for food poisoning in the first place.
this beef was distributed primarily if not exclusively to restaurants, and may still be in restaurant freezers. for the average consumer, there is not much that can be done other than ask restaurants you eat at if they use any beef products manufactured by wolverine packing company.
for people who work in food, this means throwing out the recalled beef or returning it to place of purchase for a refund.
if you think you have gotten sick in relation to this recall, please seek medical attention, even if just to get your illness associated with this. like this and every other instance of food contamination, if you develop long-term medical conditions from food poisoning, you want as many records of it as possible. this type of e. coli can cause some nasty problems in the long run.

39 illnesses, 15 hospitalizations, and one death have been linked to this outbreak so far.
as always, these numbers are expected to be lower than the true number of illnesses and deaths, and will likely rise. not everyone seeks medical attention, and even when all testing and reporting procedures go as smoothly as possible, it can take weeks to officially link an illness to an outbreak.

noteworthy from the FDA investigation page:
FDA is working with the firm to determine the source of contamination and whether additional products are affected. This advisory will be updated as information becomes available.
in short, there is a possibility this contamination may affect more than just the recalled carrots. keep up to date with these pages to stay on top of this outbreak.
the recalled carrots are no longer on shelves. but if they are in your fridge or freezer, destroy or discard them and clean anything they may have touched.
do NOT eat these carrots! this strain of e. coli is dangerous and at least one person has died.

and now some answers to some relevant questions.
I bought carrots today, are they part of this recall?
by the time you saw this on tumblr, the recalled carrots were no longer being sold. as of this post, the recall has not expanded to include anything other than what is listed here, but it may expand in the future.
I bought non-organic carrots, are they part of the recall?
no, or at least not at this time. see above.
how did e. coli contaminate the carrots?
e. coli is transmitted through feces. poop with e. coli in it probably contaminated the water, manure, or compost used to grow the carrots. usually from cows.
are the contaminated carrots safe to eat if frozen first?
no.
are the contaminated carrots safe to eat if washed first?
no.
is it a good idea to put the contaminated carrots (or anything else contaminated with shiga toxin-producing e. coli) in my compost?
no, that is exactly how vegetables can get contaminated with e. coli in the first place.
is it safe to give the contaminated carrots to pets?
no, pets can get e. coli, and then contaminate wherever they poop with e. coli.
are the contaminated carrots safe to eat if you cook them?
you really do not want to be taking risks with shiga toxin-producing strains of e. coli. it can make you shit blood and can seriously damage your organs, it can contaminate anything it touches (cutting board, knife, fridge, etc), and treatment is limited. the FDA or CFIA will sometimes say a contaminated/recalled food is relatively safe to eat as long as you cook it thoroughly, but both the FDA and CFIA recommend not cooking with these carrots at all.
is e. coli contagious?
yes. through poop. if you get e. coli, make sure you wash your hands as well as possible with soap after going to the bathroom, and consider using a different bathroom than everyone else in your household if you have access to more than one bathroom. it is not rare for someone taking care of or living with someone else with e. coli to become infected.
can I get a refund?
contact the store you bought the carrots from to find out.
why does it seem like there is a new recall every month in the united states and/or canada?
actually, there are new recalls nearly every day around here. wherever you live, please consider keeping up with wherever your local recalls are announced. you can often sign up for e-mail alerts.

if I have a connective tissue disorder (ehlers-danlos syndrome, marfan syndrome, loeys-dietz syndrome, etc), what is the class of antibiotics I should avoid?
fluoroquinolones.
I hope that helps clear some things up! stay safe!
I really hope that post makes someone with a connective tissue disorder find out they need to avoid fluoroquinolones. not enough healthcare practitioners who prescribe antibiotics know to look out for connective tissue disorders. it often is on the patient to bring it up.

I am definitely going to think twice before buying anything from them from now on.
tom's of maine is owned by colgate-palmolive.
this is not a recall. tom's of maine products potentially made using contaminated water, including those aimed at children, remain on shelves.
hi, i’m your local laid off discord employee, here to talk about exactly how safe it may or may not be to talk about Political Activism on discord. my credentials here are that i was a senior member of discord’s trust & safety team, which is the team that handles bans, legal investigations, and legal compliance. (my speciality was in child safety, anti-grooming, and taking down CSAM, but i also worked occasionally in low level terrorism issues and assisted that team in investigations.) i also know most of the people still working there in these capacities.
the tldr and most important thing to know is: i do not recommend you plan, discuss plans, or use any kind of hyperbolic (or not) language about violence to government officials or anyone in that vicinity on discord. please use signal instead.
a discord trust & safety employee is technically able to see any message you’ve sent under your account, going all the way back to the beginning of your account. unless you have manually deleted a message, it is viewable to a tns employee. now: it is a tremendous part of being on a tns team that we did NOT invade user privacy without cause. cause was usually: another user reported something you said, and we thought the reported message indicated you might be doing something elsewhere that was illegal (for example: a user says “i’m talking to this girl but she’s in high school lol.” i would then try to find evidence as to whether or not there was a child safety issue there. in this example, we’d require clear admission of age from both the user and the alleged high school girl, and then clear evidence of sexual talk between them, and go from there.) finding evidence required looking though all of that user’s messages.
most of the tns team, as i know them, are pretty resolute about not going further in looking than would be needed for action. most of the tns team that i still speak to is very much on the side of blue. your general conversations are probably perfectly safe, and we were very good at figuring out quickly if someone has reported you maliciously. i don’t believe you need to worry too much about your porn and fanfic and all that.
HOWEVER: reported content must be investigated, and discord can, and has been, legally subpoenaed to turn over user information. again, this has nominally been in Very Evil cases (CSAM and grooming, school shooting threats, murder admissions, etc.) but that could change, either at the federal level, or at the discord policy level. discord, like any social media company, could easily be pressured or forced into taking on different internal policies that could get you in serious trouble if you are organizing violent or “illegal” resistance. if that happens, there is a scenario where this incoming administration is given access to your messages.
again: please do not organize your political or social resistance on discord from now on. please use signal to ensure your maximum safety. do not panic if you have already talks about things on discord: you can easily delete your messages, and that WILL remove from an employee’s view. do that and use signal from now on.
