The Winter’s Tale

Comments: So now you show us the source of the sink! I love that you layered the Hitchcock clips into the animation. I also love the perfectly alarming and relevant quote from Orwell. The way you animated the text and the eyes in motion with the film clip worked really well. I’m watching the clip, but I’m mostly watching what you have layered on top of the clip. I like the eye you created...the hand drawn look is a nice (slightly more sophisticated) node to your childlike scribblings on the cups in the painting. They eyes are weird, but not super spooky, which I think works well with the story of the memory. I do like the slow motion of them dripping down the shower curtain, and then the faster motion of them going down the drain. The transition to the Vertigo imagery was really smooth and worked well- as did the added sound effects. Have you shown your mom these two pieces yet!!?? I’d love to know how she reacted!! I think there are some parts were the motion could have been a little more precise, and maybe more variety in the eyes, or more shifts in transparency and scale as they go down the drain- but I’m overall very happy with the final result. You’re going to be a force to be reckoned with in this department- I can’t wait to see what you do next!

Comments: Nice job Amy! I’m so glad you continued to work in After Effects and pushed yourself by animating on top of live footage. This project feel like a jumping off point for you- I really hope you continue to work with time and duration as a strategy in your work. The final project is missing some visual drama, I see it more as an experiment in shape layered with live footage, as well as a great learning project. It has some areas that need more direction and resolve. But I’m still really pleased with it and glad you tackled it. You should definitely take the “Motion Graphics” and “Moving Pictures” classes while you are at ND. And possibly even a course or two over in the FTT department. I think durational works give you the ability to really push your artist statement further by directly manipulating footage that captures “reality”. I’d also encourage you to take a painting class or two and definitely a printmaking class or two. These courses will all give you the opportunity to play with layered imagery and conceptual construction. You’re going to do great things here. These two foundational courses are just your jumping off point!! I’m very happy with all of the work you did in this class!!

Comments: This is such a weird painting. It’s so weird that I absolutely love it and can’t stop looking at it. You totally play with perception in the image, which is exactly what happened to you as a child. In your painting, the sink juts out at us, floating in space. The cups cascade down (I can imagine you holding up one cup and dumping into another- and you aren’t weird, all of my nieces and nephews do the same activity every night in the bath) but also levitate. The one reflectionless cup just asks you to question it. And then you have all of the graphic, gridded patterns...the tiled wall, the repeated mirror frame (I love that it extends beyond the composition), the glowing orbs of light- my eye just continually moves around the composition. Oh yeah, and the eye in the drain! The one tiny hint to Hitchcock! But I love that you focused on bath time in the sink. Within that focus, we get drawn into a mishmash of surrealist perception. It’s pretty fantastic! I wouldn’t change a thing (I love your use of color and value too). I think you very accurately drew us into to your memory in the most engaging way! Excellent work!!
