Beginners Guide To Cleaning! ʕ •̀ ω •́ ʔ
Hello everyone! I'm back with a tutorial how to clean digital art. ٩(◕‿◕。)۶ Kind of requested by @amydark203, I hope this can help you at least get started!
Before when I first started out with cleaning digital art I had no idea what to do, so I started with researching on the Internet. Alas, there was nothing much really. I did find this video where they cleaned some words off a tbhk cover, but there was nothing really to learn off of it.
If you wish to learn how to scanalate/learn the gimmicks with Adobe Photoshop here is an invite link to the scanalation school's discord! You can find how to download photoshop for free there, but right now they are revamping it (just check the announcements).
Disclaimer! This is my way of cleaning tbhk art and it might not be the most efficient way, but it works for me! You can also use photoshop but I like Pixlr because there's two different types of brushes you can use.
Anyway, onto the tutorial! (✧∀✧)/
I will be using Pixlr which you find find here and I will be using the Pixlr E version. Pixlr is basically a free version of photoshop. It doesn't have all the stuff that photoshop has, but for a beginner, it's a great place to start!
For this tutorial I will be using volume 10 to demonstrate.
First you want to obviously open up the image that you want to clean
You will be greeted with this page. The circled tools is the tools that you will most likely use!
Going from left to right, up to down:
The pen tool (shortcut- p): I use this to soften up the edges from the brush tool (more on that later) and I usually use this to do some of the more smaller parts in the art.
The brush tool (shortcut-b): I used this to cover large expanses of the art in a solid color. There is subcategories in this area (more on that later)
The eyedropper tool (shortcut-i): Used to get the exact color shade from the art.
The pan/hand tool (shortcut-spacebar): Used to move around the photo.
Video Showing Each Tool:
Putting Tools In Action!
So I will be first demonstrating the pen tool and the brush+ the eyedropper too! As you saw, there is different categories inside of the pen and brush tool. I use the plain as it is sufficient enough. For the brush tool, I use the solid one as it's easier to control where it is going. Feel free to play around with the brushes! (≧▽≦)
We'll start with the bottom of the art as there isn't much to clean.
Using the eyedropper to pick the exact shade of purple needed for the background
Used the pen tool to make a divider between the character and the bone that doesn't need to be colored with purple.
Used the brush tool to fill in the purple on a larger expanse.
You would also clean up the excess yellow from the bottom left, but this was just a demo to allow you to get the gist of it! (。•̀ᴗ-)✧
More Complicated Parts
Pick the color needed for the outline
Fill it in roughly (to be fixed later on)
Pick the color needed for that tan spot and create the outline for it
Fill it in with the brush tool
Fill it in and clean up the lines
The tool shown here is the shape tool. If you want to draw straight lines, click draw, line tool, and change the width of the line! Make sure you click draw! If you do not do this step, it will create a new layer for each line you draw!
Basically, cleaning is just half drawing outlines and using your imagination to re-create the parts that are hidden by the text! ( ° ∀ ° ) Also cleaning stuff is just a lot of repetition as well hahha
Anyway, this is the end for this tutorial! I hope this has helped a few people who are starting out with cleaning! I might make another post with tips and tricks to make cleaning photos go faster/smoother!
