So, yeah. There are not a lot of women in ops at the moment (understatement). If you want us to stick around, and if you want there to ever be more, choosing language that makes room for us to be part of the in-group is as good a place to start as any.
We aren’t well served when our community is segmented into the hipsters versus the enterprise, the PowerShell wizards versus those who perennially believe it’s finally the year of Linux on the desktop, the web-scale cowboy devs versus the ops chicks who hate MongoDB, and all those other inflection points where we differ from one another.
We’ll do better to focus on the ways we are the same. All of us in this devops space are interested in improving our workflows and our interactions with our co-workers, no matter what our specific job functions are.
It turns out that I don’t operate at my full potential when I believe someone else will find and fix my mistakes. I play better without a safety net. I also have a burning need to work on stuff that I feel I own completely.
Your job when recruiting is to find those people who will do well in the environment you’ve built, and who have skills, abilities and aspirations that coincide with the needs of your company.
This is not a world where you can simply express love for other people, where you can praise them. Perhaps it should be. But it’s not. I’ve found that people will fear your enthusiasm and warmth, and wait to hear the price.

However, I'm still going to use the "I have people skills, dammit!" quote to describe what my job is when I'm at happy hour! :)
Many times I have heard BA's using the phrase - "I feel like the meat in the sandwich, being crushed from both sides," and I usually retort = "It is eventually the meat that provides the taste."
To be able to overcome this lack of authority a BA needs to utilize the following:
a. attentive and centered listening, and do this while challenging the brain to process information in parallel
b. influencing people, dealing with hidden agendas, and resolving conflicts (that range from professional to political to personal)
c. influencing people to perform tasks, often which they may not really like to do
d. interrogating people while building and maintaining relationships
e. educating and training people who may not want to be educated or trained in the subject
In short, a BA is expected to push people towards results using influencing skills.
