HERCULES sat cross legged on an old tartan blanket spread across the grass, beside him a cool six pack of beer and two small lunchboxes. One contained a selection of chopped fruit and the other crackers, cheese and some relish. He opened his beer sitting back into a more comfortable position, for the first time since he arrived his eyes fixated on the giant screen.ย โOhโฆโ he sighed out loud.ย โI thought this was the Christmas movieโ I guess a horror in June makes more sense.โ
Megara hadnโt expect to come across Hercules here. Sure, she was told to keep a close eye on him but seeing him here like this just felt coincidental. It was her chance to meet him for real--just as strangers. Megara stood at the edge of his blanket, a devilish smile taking ahold of her lips.ย โWhat? Were you expecting a romantic comedy, not in this town.โ She paused, biting her lower lip for a moment in thought.ย โI uh--didnโt get to thank you the other day for helping me out. You really didnโt have to do that, but thank you.โ Even if her plan to fall into his arms was calculated the sentiment was genuine. To be honest it pulled at her heartstrings.ย โMind if I join you?โ

Persephone noticed quickly that she actually knew the female and it was none other than Megara. She felt for the girl, knowing Hades was as prickly as a cactus and had a hobby for manipulation. Meg, Percy, and Perry were his favorite puppets. None of them particularly bothered her, though she had the softest spot for Meg. To give it all up for love was such a beautiful thought until reality set in that not everyone was that kind. Persephone felt for her, a sympathy, and always tried to do what she could to help her even though she was also a captive herself.ย
At her question Persephone immediately shook her head, a quicker answer than explaining but she assured her anyway.ย โNo, not at all. I could ask you the same thing.โ A small smile formed before fading as quickly as it appeared.ย โJust enjoying the sunlight. Find anything good?โ She asked, nodding towards the records.ย
๐ฅ
Megara let out a sigh of relief. Persephone was right. They were both bound to Hades but in different ways. Even Meg couldnโt help but to feel sorry for the god. Ruling the underworld was a lonesome one,ย finding her own family within the graveyard full of souls. It wasnโt conventional or rational even but she had to work with what she was dealt. Hades was finicky but usually she paid no mind to his schemes or deals outside of her contract. It wasnโt her place nor business. But wanting to kill an innocent man? That was something she couldnโt agree with. Hercules was...sweet. What could he possibly do?
โIโm sorry, slipped my mind. I wonโt tell if you wonโt?โ Meg offered a small smile.ย โYeah, actually. Mostly oldies but theyโre my favorite. Canโt go wrong with classic rock. How about you? This place is straight out of a horror film, doom and gloom doesnโt seem to fit you.โ Megara commented in reference to her affinity for spring. Prentiss was dreary, foggy, and not so full of sunshine.
[ย ๐พ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฝ ๐๐๐ฐ๐๐๐ด๐ ]
Persephone didnโt get out as often as sheโd like, the darkness beginning to take its hold on her. That didnโt mean that feeling the sun on her cheeks didnโt make her feel rejuvenated. Sometimes she wondered if she herself was meant to be a plant and looking for her weekly fill of sunlight to survive. Thatโs all everyone was trying to do anyway, wasnโt it? Survive.ย
Sometimes she would use Cerberus as an excuse to get out. Telling Hades that she needed the protection or heโd been working hard lately and needed a break. Today she was alone and wandering through town as she usually did. It was nice to see people that were alive and smiling. After awhile down there Persephone felt like she forgot what that looks like. Although she usually didnโt talk to many people, but a sound drew her attention behind her as she saw someone had dropped their belongings on the sidewalk. Without a second thought she went to assist them.ย โIs that everything?โ She asked, holding out a few items she had picked up for them.
Megara wasnโt happy with the way her โmissionโ was going. At least that was what Hades would call it. It was obvious he needed Hercules out of the picture but in front of Hercules he seemed so...harmless? He wasnโt what she had been expecting at all. Tall and handsome sure but not an actual ray of sunshine. Hercules optimism was beginning to cloud her better judgement. You think a girl would learn.
Leaving a thrift store she held a couple of vintage vinyl's in her bag. Though it was completely her luck that the bag had a rather large hole in the bottom and the vinyl's came crashing to the ground all around her.ย โOf course..โ Meg sighed as she kneeled down picking up the few that were closest to her reach. Lifting her chin she noticed Persephone offering a helping hand.ย โYeah, thanks.โ Megara smiled softly before taking the records from Persephone.ย โLook, itโs not like I'm not happy to see you. I just hope youโre not here because he told you to spy on me.โ She was hoping Hades had more trust in her than that. Besides who was going to do a better job than her? Certainly not Percy or Perry.

HERCULES had been in America how many years now, ten? Heโd spent almost six years travelling around the globe training with Phil, putting himself in every scenario, doing the impossible in search of finding his way back home. America had felt like the beginning of the end to his journey, he had arrived in Prentiss looking for trouble and boy did he find it. Hercules had somehow known this place would be where he crossed the finish line.. and so he never left. But something about today was different in a way he couldnโt describe, like he was meeting with destinyโlike Zeus was really sending him a message; today mattered and he was going to make the most of it.ย
Despite the giddy sensation of excitement in his stomach Hercules tried to go on with his day as best he could. Wandering the streets from errand to errand he looked everywhere for a signโ repetitive numbers or words, anything to guide him. He had been so caught up in his own fantasy he didnโt see what was right in front of him until it was too late. With an oomph escaping his lips Hercules stopped in his tracks, arms instinctively stretching out to help balance the individual. Upon seeing her smile his body stilled, the wind was knocked from his chest as he mouth hung open like an idiot.ย
โIโIโโ he stammered, not quite able to believe what was happening.ย โIโm so sorry mโamโ are you okay? Are you hurt? I know first aid!โ
That wasnโt the reaction she had been expecting, especially from a man of his stature. His concern and apology seemed genuine enough, even if he was stammering over his words like a toddler in trouble. It was kind of cute though.ย โWhoa, calm down there steamboat. Donโt want you revving your engines too hard now.โ Megara kept a small smile at her lips, still using his chest to keep balance.ย โIโll be alright, Iโm a big girl after all. I can handle myself for the most part.โ Megara chuckled, looking down at her now broken heel that was barely hanging on.ย โNo first aid is needed, though would it be asking you too much if you had a spare pair of shoes? Preferably flat ones.โ Considering she hadnโt sustained any major injury she needed something else to keep him near. She wouldnโt be able to get any intel if this was the end. Besides the faster she got this over with the faster she could get her soul back. Her freedom.

She had the face, the name, and the cherry on top was the plan. Hades instructions were clear, he wanted this guy dead. However Megara wasnโt the cold blooded killer type, sheโd leave that up to one of his other minions. Instead sheโd gather intel. Find a weakness. Megara knew it wasnโt going to be easy. Seeing only a few pictures it looked like the man could crush anything in his way with his biceps alone. Though if he wasย like any other man heโd be easy to seduce into coercion. If he was anything like the man she traded her soul for. So instead of her usual casual attire she chose something more sultry and appealing to the male gaze. A knee-length cotton purple summer dress and some strappy lavender heels. It was the most effort she had put into her appearance in some time. She watched him from afar at first, trying to find the proper moment to strike and make her move. Which was a tad bit difficult since this man seemed to be about his business.ย
It was when he had finally stopped at an intersection of a crosswalk she was finally able to make her move. Walking towards him she knew what the plan was and immediately put it into action. She would wait until they were only a few feet apart then sheโd put a large amount of pressure onto one heel until it finally snapped. As planned she crashed right into her targetโs chest. Looking up at him with doe eyes and a sheepish smile.ย โSorry, weak ankles.โ

โAnd we all know how much I like comedy,โ Hades quipped sarcastically,ย โDantes Inferno Divine Comedy? Rated it 10/10 on goodreads. I especially liked the part where the heretics are burned. That part was absoluteย hilarious - and surprisingly an accurate interpretation of the Underworld.โ
โMaybe people would care more about living their lives if they were reminded how very, very short it is,โ the god commented before he shut off his phone, setting it down on the table before he turned to look over at Megara.ย ย โA little fear in me can really get the living toโฆ Well, live. Except for you, though. Youโre my special little exception.โ He grinned, extending his hand to reach over and graze her jawline with his hand in an act of faux affection to make his point.
โBetter get your bikini ready then,โ Hades snickered before he flicked the phone screen on again.ย โI donโt need you for that - yet - but I do have a job for you to do. Thereโs a guy here thatโs a real big thorn in my side, and Iโm gonna need your help to pluck it out.โ A few quick swipes of his phone brought up a picture of a large, muscular-looking asian man with a big, goofy smile.ย โLook at him. Doesnโt he just rub you the wrong way? I actually hate him. The world will be a whole lot better - for me - if he was wiped off the face of it. Ya feel me?โ He paused, getting the impression that she didnโtย โfeelโ him.ย โOkay, do this for me, give it your all, your best acting performance to help me find his weakness - and you know what? I might just give you your freedom back. Thatโs how much I need this guy dead.โ
๐ฅ
โI figured youโd like that book.โ Megara had read it years before she came to Hades and offered her soul up on a silver platter. She was too timid to read it now knowing exactly how the Underworld worked. It would made her too squeamish to make the comparisons.
He wasnโt wrong. Life was short, and even shorter for others.ย โFor once I would have to agree with you. Too many people have misconceptions when it comes to death and the hereafter.โ Instead of rolling her eyes she offered a smug smile at his touch.ย โThatโs me.โ She hummed softly, knowing good and well his affection was not genuine. However she never denied it, she was stuck in limbo with him after all. It was best for everyone if she made the most of it.
Megaraโs eyebrows knitted together in interest at the mention of a job.ย โWhat did he do? Steal your toys on the playground?โ She teased, leaning in to get a better look at the man.ย โI mean he looks like a regular dude, maybe even handsome.โ She added, then looking up to notice Hades sour expression. It was too much information to process in that moment that Meg had a rather dumbfounded look across her face.ย โMy freedom?โ She paused, not sure if this was another a game he was playing or not.ย โWhy would you do that? Youโd be so bored without me.โ Which wasnโt entirely true, heโd probably already have his hands full with Percy and Perry alone. It just felt weird being anything other than Hades assistant after all these years.
โIโll do it, I mean I donโt really have much of a choice do I?โ She asked, scanning the picture of the stranger once more.ย โCan you tell me why you need this guy dead so bad at least?โ

โBoo, bad joke,โ Hades said curtly, pulling out his new mobile device to explore it,ย โIโve been too busy for the last few thousand years. Itโs not my fault I fell behind in the trends. One moment the catapult is the latest and greatest thing โ then I blink and now apparently people canโt get enough of watching cute animal videos on a tiny screen for hours when their time is already so limited.โ A laugh escaped the god. He flashed the screen to Megara, showing her a viral cat video of a dog spazzing out over an alpaca interaction.ย โI mean, look at this. Canโt say I blame them, but boy, it makes sense why so many souls with meaningless lives have flooded into the Underworld in the last 100 years. Ever since the damn TV was invented.โ
โTwitter? What, people canโt get enough of pigeons fighting over bread that they had to make an entire platform for it?โ
โA joke nonetheless.โ Megara replied swiftly, a small grin tugging at her lips. Listening to him talk she swirled her straw in circles around her blended margarita. Lifting her gaze when he shared his screen with her. Megara didnโt care much for social media, not much to flex about when your soul was already sold to the devil. She tried them all but the only one she really kept up with was Instagram. Meg could post a couple of pics and be as vague as she wanted to be and that's what she liked most about it. โI canโt either, animals are a good source of entertainment. I think most people use as it an escape. Either to get away from their lives or highly exaggerate it. But like everything else it can become an addiction.โ
โNo, not pigeons.โ She laughed, proceeding to pull out her phone and pulled up the app so he could take a look at it. โItโs mostly people sharing their opinions or every little thought they have in their head...I guess itโs a lot like Facebook but more anonymous.โ Megara paused, a snarky grin beginning to grace her lips as she spoke. โIf youโre going to have me start taking pics for your social influence I think Iโd rather throw myself into the River Styx first.โ
โWow, mortals have been busy little bees these last few hundred years,โ the man spoke out loud to no one in particular, starring at the television on the wall of the bar while he grabbed the cocktail in front of him. Haden glanced briefly at his watch, pausing for a second to consider how much time he had to spare before returning to keep up with his full time job.ย โTell me more about thisโฆ social mediaย thing.โ
Megara sat next to him with the cocktail menu in her hands. She couldnโt help but to chuckle at his curiosity.ย โI think youโre better suited with a rock, yโknow like the dark ages. The world doesnโt need to hear about your grandiose schemes to take over the world. You arenโt the first to try it.โย She paused, lifting her gaze to meet his.ย โBut who am I to judge? I think youโd like Twitter.โ

โI thought maybe there was a chanceโฆโ
Hades let out out an audible laugh, grinning from ear to ear at this mortalโs foolish attempts at clinging onto hope. โ-Let me stop you right there, sweetheart. Youโve got a better chance of winning at a starring contest with Medusa than you do of seeing your boyfriend again,โ he said, snarky in his tone.
โTrust me, Iโm in no shortage of souls. Mortals drop like flies all year long. Theyโre literally dying to see me. I feel so popular,โ he remarked sarcastically, an apathetic shrug flicked from his shoulders. โIโve got more souls than I know what to do with - but Iโm not exactly keen on losing a single number in my soul count. You can say a bit of a perfectionist.โ Control freak, tyrant, authoritarian, monster. All valid labels.
A thought clicked in Hades head, making him raise it slightly while he starred at the woman. He was in no need of more dead, but he was sparse on the living.ย ย โLook, Iโm not about to let you walk into my kingdom just to experience what sudden death is like,โ his grin chesire-like, his voice saccharine -ย too sweet as he spoke to her.ย โItโs not fun, I hear. People have been moaning about it - literally - for centuries.โย He waited, pausing for a moment for dramatic purposes to let his impeccable sense of humor set in. But then his good-humored disposition slid into a more stoic and charming demeanor. Smoothly, he maneuvered himself beside her, pulling her close by cupping her shoulder in his hand and drawing her in close.
โ-but I can make you a deal. You give me your soul, and Iโll let your sugar boo walk out of here with a second chance to be a good boyfriend to you. Iโll just need you to do some things for me whenever I tell you. I could use some livelier help.โ
Before her lovers accident Megara wouldโve retorted with a snarky comment, maybe even challenge the god. However that was not the case here. Her heart was heavy. Feeling as if her little latern of heart would flicker out at any given moment. Instead she stood still as the weeping angels that guarded loved ones graves around them. His smug attitude was sickening especially since she felt at her absoluteย lowest. There wasnโt much more she could do to convince him other than to beg--and well desperate times call for desperate measures.
โIโm not afraid to die.โ Which was untrue, she was scared senseless of what lied hereafter. Though she didnโt see much of a point going on when he wasnโt with her to enjoy the world together. She didnโt have family, not blood anyway. Barely any friends, the people in her life were mainly acquaintances. All she had was him.ย โIโd trade places with him if I could.โ That part was true.
Megara felt her breath hitch as the man changed his tune. A glimmer of hope radiated off her irises. โM-My soul?โ Thousands of questions flew through her head. How could one even continue to live without a soul? Would it hurt? Would she be different? She paused, lifting her chin to meet his piercing gaze. Do it. Her inner voiced roared. It didnโt matter the consequences, she wouldโve done anything he asked of her..ย โWhat kind of things exactly, like an errand girl? What does a god need of a human that he canโt come by himself?โ She bit her lower lip before she could ramble further.ย โIt wonโt hurt, will it?โ She asked softly.
kingofdisappointmentโ:
-
โAdorable,โ Hades snorted, laughing at the girlโs boldness.ย โBut Iโm afraid thatโs going to be impossible,โ he began, a condescending tone dripping from his lips.ย โYou might be able to make it into the underworld if Iโm feeling gracious, sure. Or youโll get lost in the tunnels underground and stare to death. And Iโm sure as hell not going to hand over a soul thatโs rightfully mine.โย
โSo, what exactly is your game plan, here? I donโt think it was very well thought through.โ
She kept still--taking in his words. They were hefty but itโd be unlike her not to try. It all felt miniscule to what she was feeling inside. Even if sheโd get lost or starve to death as he said it was something sheโd willingly sacrifice.
He was right. She hadnโt planned it out. Megara was quite surprised she had gotten herself this far, but it wasnโt enough.ย โI didnโt really have one to begin with, but I heard of a god who overlooked souls of the dead--and I thought maybe there was a chance...โ
Megara could feel the pain in her chest beginning to tighten again as she looked up at the man.ย โJust let me try--let me find him. I didnโt even get to say goodbye, his death was an unfair one. What have you got to lose? You could gain an extra soul by the end of this.โ Megara knew the consequences, death being the most likely one, but she was confident that he wouldโve done the same for her.
โWellโฆโ Hades began, an eyebrow quirked as he tilted his head to the side to stare at the mortal woman before him. He was alerted to her presence near a hidden gate to his kingdom when all 3 dog heads of Cerberus began to growl in alert. Theyโd do no harm to the living, but for the dead that tried to escape - well, there was no escaping.ย โItโs not every day that I find a mortal at my doorstep. An alive one, anyway.โ
โ there are dozens of other ways of getting into my kingdom, you know - albeit, those methods require a little more permanence.โ
Megara wasnโt quite sure what she was getting herself into. She knew it was reckless a decision but she had extorted all of her other options. Grief was unkind and unforgiving. This couldnโt be the end, she refused that notion. It wasnโt the end until she said it was.
By either luck or a deadly miracle she wounded up on the devils doorstep. She stood there for a moment in awe of his presence, it felt powerful. While she didnโt feel it she kept her posture confident.ย โIโm not here to be apart of your kingdom, Iโm here to get someone out of it.โ
