Chapter 1
Zephyrine
I'm leaning on a balcony looking at the beautiful sky in what looks like a place I've never been.
“It's beautiful isn't it?”
I turn around and my breath stops, looking at the man walking towards me. Who is he? He comes up next to me, leans on the balcony, and looks up at the sky.
Weird dream.
“It is” I reply. He turns to look at me, but I keep my eyes focused on the sky.
“I hate to have to do this. I am truly sorry Zephyrine that our time together had to be so short.”
I turn to look at him stunned. How did he know my name? I look down to see a dagger in his hands. Shit. He stabs me with all his might, right in my gut. Why can't I move? “I'll see you again soon. I promise.” He says with a smirk.
I jolt awake, sweat dripping from my forehead. What the fuck was that? Whoever he was, I just want to know how the hell he knew my name.
I'll keep this to myself for now so Blade doesn't freak out on me and force me to go to a Seer.
I walk to my curtains, opening them to see the beautiful city. Dressitata. I see the amazing shops all over, cobblestone roads, busy people, and the castle which feels like it's miles away. Who knew I would ever live in a city like this. Not like I had any choice in the matter anyway.
I changed into my ‘work’ outfit I call it, baggy brown pants, a cropped black long sleeve, and a scarf around my neck. I tie my curly long light pink hair up while I make my way downstairs. Weird to be born with natural curly pink hair of all colors as a human, but who knows, this realm has all sorts of weird.
“Looking breathtaking as usual Z.” Blade winks at me from the kitchen.
“Thanks as do you” I reply with a big grin on my face. No kidding, he has the body of a warrior. All the time fighting against Vapia did him good. Although it didn't do his heart and soul good. It's been years since then, but those scars run deep.
Those years he was away were rough, but I'm just glad he's okay. Blade is really my best friend, I don't know what I’d do without him. Fuck I hate being sappy.
“Oh my, what have I done to deserve such a beautiful smile.” He says with a stumble back and a hand to the heart.
“I hate you,” I laugh. “Anyway, we have a lot of work to do today so we need to go see what jobs Val needs us for,” I say sitting at the countertop.
“Yeah, good idea lets do it after the food perhaps?”
“Yeah, yeah.”
We take the alley down to Val’s tavern. She is our inside ears to the city, she gives us jobs, once we collect the item or complete the task, money’s ours. She helped me a lot while Blade was gone, teaching me how to become strong, and fend for myself.
Walking into the tavern, I spot Sylviana, my childhood best friend, and run up to hug her.
“It's good to see you, Sylvie,” I smile.” She's a witch and one of the best ones I know. We met when I was around 16 when Blade finally let me go on my first mission by myself. We worked together on that mission and have been inseparable ever since.
She works with Val from time to time but also runs a business herself, as an assassin. Badass I tell her every time, even though she just says it's a dangerous job.
“Z! How are you? It's great to see you.”
“It's only been like three weeks,” I laugh.
“Still a very long time if you ask me. Anyway, Let’s sit, have a quick drink before I run?”
“Of course.” I say making my way to the bar. Val hands us both Strawberry Riddles, her specialty, and my favorite.
“How are you, Sylvie?” She looked like she’s been through a lot these past couple of weeks but I’m guessing killing people for a living can take a toll on you. Even if they are all bad.
“Good. Just some of the jobs I've been on have taken a toll on me.” She said, putting down her drink.
“I understand, are you okay?” I ask. Even if I haven't ever felt the feeling of killing someone, I want to be there for her.
“Yeah just need a break from time to time. Enough about me, how are you? Things going good with Blade?” She winks at me. I hope she knows we're coming back to her topic. Anyway, of course, she should know things between us would never happen, he is way older than me; I’m 20 and he's 26. Plus he is the guy who took me in.
“Your very funny Sylvie. Yes, everything is fine, even if he can be a pain in the ass sometimes.” Val walks over to us and leans on the bar drink in hand.
“Time to rap it up Zeph, I have a big job for you today.”
“Just for me? What about Blade?” I ask.
“He needs to do other things, and your my best thief around here anyway, don't tell him I said that though,” she laughs.
“Whatever you say, sorry to make our time together so short Sylvie,” I frown.
“It's fine we will catch up next time and maybe go out for a night of fun?”
“Of course,” I give her a hug goodbye, so does Val, then she leaves the bar.
