Coolant & Antifreeze is used in numerous applications.  Your car's radiator has coolant that keeps your engine cool on hot summer days.  Manufactures of antifreeze add chemicals to to the base ingredient (usually water) to lower the freezing point, and raise the boiling point. Anti-foaming ingredients and rust inhibitors such as nitrites, silicates, phosphates and borates,  are also added.  The Ph is also balanced.   There is conventional antifreeze (ethylene glycol based ), or Extended Life Coolant, or sometimes called Long Life Coolant that contains  organic acid technology, they use carboxylate type organic acids that provide metal corrosion protection. The Recycling Process Used antifreeze is collected in a holding tank and a mobile processing truck drives to your facility and recycles the antifreeze on site, or a tanker truck pumps out your tank and hauls the used antifreeze to a recycling facility where   contaminants  are removed by way of filtration, distillation, reverse osmosis, or ion exchange.  Then, chemical additives are added to restore the coolant's properties. According to the EPA, hazardous byproducts of antifreeze recycling are: metals such as lead, chromium, cadmium, copper, or zinc. Depending on the type of recycling performed, wastes may include filters, sludge or resins.  These should be disposed of in accordance with federal and local laws.  It is illegal to dump used antifreeze in the sewer or storm drain.   Benefits of Recycling Antifreeze Ethylene glycol is produced from natural gas, a non-renewable resource.  Additionally, reclaimed antifreeze is less expensive then virgin antifreeze.

Stormwater that runs off public streets, or other paved surfaces can contain zinc from rubber tires, oil, fuel, grease, trash and other debris that can pollute our water ways.  Storm drains do not go to a sewer treatment plant for the water to be filtered and separated.  Stormwater makes it's way to rivers and finally the ocean.   There are several different types of storm drain filters. From simple cloth filters that can be zip-tied to a storm drain grate, to passive filter systems with oil absorbent material and debris screens.  Others even have replaceable or serviceable filter cartridges.  Usually a forklift or heavy duty tools are needed to install and replace storm drain filters.   Different municipalities have different stormwater cleanliness criteria and rules and regulations. Above is an example of a storm drain insert that has filter media to capture large and fine debris and even hydrocarbons and zinc.  To prevent backup, overflow holes are provided along the top of the filter "box."
