I'm not even going to mention the person because the person is not even worth mentioning. American Chavez is an Afro-Latina.
She is Latina to the point where Marvel is actively promoting her as such. So to have a non Afro-Latina actress playing the charcter is a huge disrespect to me because I feel that Kevin Feige just saw a random latina actor and was like "that's good enough". The problem with big companies like Disney and Marvel Studios is that they ignore the ramifications that this brings. It leads to people generalizing Latinos as being the same when in fact we have different cultures, different variations of languages like spanish and etcetera.
And for the one person who is like oh Chavez is an alien and anyone can be cast as such because she is an alien and isnt latina this that and the other.
Fuck you and you're part of the problem. To reiterate myself; Marvel themselves (not Marvel Studios) is promoting American Chavez as a Latina and more specifically she is Afro-Latina and LGBTQ+ at that. All your doing is continuing the Afro-Latino erasure.
Well guess what we are fucking here. We exist and we are here to stay. I am black and latino and I am proud. So to have Kevin fucking Feige to cast Chavez with a non-Afro Latina actress is a big slap in the face to my people because America Chavez is a representation of my people and to have that representation ripped from us is disrespectful as fuck. Theres no way around that.
I was wrong to say "Hey maybe the actress would play the part great" nope I take back those words because Marvel Studios took that representation away from Afro-Latinas and it's only going to worse here because Chavez is out and proud and I'm guessing that they're going to either straightwash her or just not mention her sexuality at all and that's going to be a big problem. It's bad enough that the actress is a kid and non-afro latina but to also take away LGBTQ representation from us as well is a bad fucking move.
Hi I just want to add something. I 100 percent agree with your statement. While I have no ill will towards the actress because this is mostly on Marvel and Sarah Finn’s part, I can say I am angry by their decision. I am an Afro-Latina aspiring actor. I’m 16, I have experience in working in theater and acting training (I’ve worked with UCB and have submitted auditions to theatre competitions). While I may not have an agent, I do regret never auditioning for this role because it means so much to me. America represents all Latinx and Hispanic backgrounds, but especially those who are Afro-Latinx. If you look at her comics, she’s always depicted as dark skin. It’s another thing with the In The Heights controversy, as someone from the Heights, I was upset to not see people who looked like me appear in the movie. Us Afro-Latinx people rarely get representation and it’s time that had changed. I genuinely hope they do a recasting so that me and hundreds of other WOC have a chance to showcase their talents and represent us better.
