Over 120 dogs have been removed from the homes of two people authorities are saying were running a dog fighting ring in Polk County, Florida.  “Nickie” Nicole Sanders, 44, and Hewitt Grant, 47, are charged with multiple crimes related to dog fighting and animal cruelty.

Polk County Sheriff’s deputies executed search warrants on the 22 of October.  They were also responsible for the removal of the dogs from the two properties in question.

Detectives say that a total of 20 dogs were taken from a home on 122 Martin Luther King Junior Street in Fort Meade.  Several of the dogs were seen wearing heavy chains designed to strengthen the dogs for fighting.

There also appears to have been a fighting ring that had been recently taken down on the property.  Other training equipment was also confiscated as well.

The reports said also say 41 dogs were removed from a home at 880 L.B. Brown Avenue in Bartow on the 22 of October.  There was also a lot of fighting equipment on that property.  It also contained a collapsible fighting ring, and there was blood all over the floors and up the walls as well.

“We like to think we rescued these dogs but the reality is this guy created dogs that are really that are dangerous,” Chief W. J. Martin of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.  According to him, Grant has been arrested before and convicted of dog fighting.

There are a total of 48 charges of animal cruelty against Sanders, and 78 charges to Grant.  More information to come as it is reported.

  At the Arizona Humane Society, there is a new “Nanny” in town, and despite what most people would think, the kittens there can get enough of him.  Boots is a 12-year-old dog that was a survivor of Hurricane Katrina, and as of a few weeks ago, is the newest volunteer at the shelter.  The other staff have taken to calling him a “dog nanny.”

The Humane Society’s public relations manager Bretta Nelson said, “It’s such a win-win for everyone involved.  Boots loves it.  Most of the kittens love it.  Some are very scared at first, but the whole thought is to get them acclimated to being around dogs.”

The kittens, all between five and eight weeks old, get to meet and hangout with Boots.  The idea being that this will take out some of the guess work when it comes to seeing how the kittens will handle being with families that already have a dog.

Boots doesn’t seem to mind being the subject of the experiment at all.  He happily spends every Wednesday alongside staff in the kitten nursery, playing and sometimes just relaxing with the kittens.

“He’s so relaxed.  We bring him in, he sniffs the tents, he sniffs the kittens,” said Nelson.  “You can see their reaction, who’s curious and will just come up to Boots or who will want to go slow.”

Each time the kittens have another interaction with Boots, their comfort level grows.

“By bringing a dog nanny in, we’re exposing these kittens to a lot of different things.  In the end, they will be adaptable, and more adoptable,” said Nelson.

Cirillo was murdered Wednesday in a Terrorist attack.  The attack took place while he was guarding Canada’s National War Memorial.

At first, there was a Tweet from Cirillo’s family.  It was a heartbreaking photo of Cirillo’s dogs, waiting for the return of their human, and because of this terrible attack, that will not happen for them now.

Along with bring a tear to many people’s eyes, the photo has also inspired a massive group of people to do the same.  This is how “#TweetAPicOfYourDog was started.

Now, Twitter is practically overrun with the photos.  All in tribute to one brave soldier’s senseless death.

A special thank you goes out to Cirillo and his family.  He paid the ultimate sacrifice to keep his country and people safe.  This does seem like a very fitting tribute to a national hero, and dog lover.

A five-year-old Chow mix with a 40-pound chain and collar embedded into his neck leaped out of the back of a pickup truck and was immediately taken in by rescuers.  So far Phoenix knew nothing but a life of sheer misery, but now he’s been given a second chance.  He is full of love to give, and is learning what it means to be loved back.

Last week Friday Phoenix made his daring leap from the truck of his abuser as he was being driven down Woodlawn Road in Clarksville, Tennessee.  He landed sharply, but the pain was nothing in comparison to what he had been enduring for the last five years.

He was lugging a 40-pound chain, and had a double loop of chain wrapped so tightly around his neck that it seemed apparent that it had been there since he was a puppy.  The driver turned around to retrieve him, but kept going as two bystanders rushed to help the dog.

“He was very unhappy and didn’t want anyone to touch him,” said Rafi Johnson, founder of Willy’s Happy Endings.

As she cut the cable away from him, Phoenix realized he wasn’t going to be abused and returned the kindness.

“He realized we weren’t trying to hurt him, we were trying to help him,” Rafi said. “He even licked me.”

She took him to the North Stewart Vet Clinic in Dover to remove the collar and the tissue that had grown around it.  He has an open wound encircling his neck that must be flushed daily, but he is slowly making progress.

He arrived weighing only 40 pounds, and is working on gaining another 20.  He is battling with a systemic infection that must clear up before he can be neutered and undergo heartworm treatment.  The tips of his ears have been eaten away by flies, and most of his back fur is missing because of flea infestation.

Staff members have fallen in love with Phoenix’s charming personality and quirks as he adjusts to a more normal life.  It is likely because he was on a chain too short for him to move properly, but when he is excited he bucks like a bronco, keeping his front legs planted while he kicks out his hind legs.  And he’s always ready to give Rafi a kiss.

“What I want to do is change their lives and show them life is not all bad, and people are not all bad,” Rafi said.

A reward is in place to bring Phoenix’s abuser to justice.  Witnesses say a very large man was driving a silver or gray pickup truck across from The Garden Center.

“We just think he deserves to be punished for what he did,” Rafi concluded.

A severely emaciated dog found wandering the streets of New Orleans has been rescued and is on the road to recovery.  When he was taken in, it was discovered that Alex had only twigs and rocks in his stomach.  He wouldn’t have lasted for much longer, but is now getting the care and love he needs.

“We saw a terrified and emaciated dog that needed help and need help fast,” Deanna Theis, assistant director of the Southern Animal Foundation, told Fox 8.

“Seeing the picture was one thing, seeing him in person was very emotional. When I picked him up I couldn’t help but tear up, and feel very sad for him,” she told HuffPost in an email.  “I hugged him and kissed him on the head and told him he will be OK now.”

“He was hesitant coming out of his transport crate, but when out, immediately kicked my hand and began wagging his tail,” Theis explained.

An X-ray showed Alex’s stomach was filled with rocks and twigs, and soon after he developed bloat and his stomach flipped, requiring immediate surgery on the 14th of this month.

“This poor baby has been through hell and back,” SAF said. “Emaciated and heavy heartworm positive made him a horrible surgical candidate, but it had to be done.”

Alex survived the incredibly risky surgery, and is now recuperating.  He is becoming well-known in the French Quarter, and people driving by honk when they see him being taken for walks.

“The responses to Alex have been overwhelming. Alex’s story has been shared more than I ever imagined it would be, and people are sending in donations to help with his medical care,” Theis told HuffPost. “He certainly has a following now, and just the positive words of support and encouragement are heartwarming.”

The 10-year veteran rescuer has been taught a valuable lesson by this lovable dog.

“This particular experience has taught me to not give up hope. Even the worst possible cases of neglect and abuse can be saved, especially if the community comes together to help out.”

How do I choose the correct bed?

K&H is often asked what size bed to order based on your dog's or cat's breed. This would be hard to determine because each animal is different and sleeps in different configurations. We suggest examining how your pet often sleeps and even measuring the approximate space your little bundle of joy takes up in order to help choose the correct bed for their needs.

Special Care Instructions

Remove lined bolster from the bed. We recommend washing in cold water, tumble dry low or line dry. You do not need to remove the soft, polyfil stuffing from the bottom to wash.

 My Dog, the Adrenalin Junkie.

We’ve all met people who can’t relax. People who have to be active, who need to be doing something all of the time. We’ve known folk who crave excitement, extreme sports. They bungee jump on Saturday, parachute from a plane on Sunday and take a holiday rock climbing a difficult cliff face as a challenge. These types of people could be described as adrenalin junkies. 

Adrenalin is a chemical which rushes through our body when we’re excited, stressed or anxious. Adrenalin can make us feel good-that burn you get from a work out, or a run in the fresh air. So good in fact, that we can become addicted to getting that rush over and over again. And guess what? Increasingly I’m encountering dogs who are adrenalin junkies too. Dogs who can’t relax and settle, who are ‘on duty’ all the time, who are anxious or stressed and occasionally as a result, can be highly frustrated or even aggressive. 

While not exclusive to high drive breeds who like to be doing a job, there is a leaning towards finding adrenalin junkies in these dogs. Working breeds such as labs and spaniels appeal to the average family who want a fun, happy dog to join in group activities. These families often find themselves living with ‘always-on-duty-hound’, rather than a pet pouch who plays football with the kids, goes for a run with mum, then keeps dad company while watching tv. Let me share 3 cases I’ve recently seen, the likes of which sadly, I’m seeing more and more of recently.

Cocker Spaniel Archie never voluntarily lies down. His owners contacted me as they were finding his levels of activity around the house impossible to live with. He is walked plenty, indeed they are getting fitter and fitter by the day as they try to tire him out. Fetch can go on for hours and hours and yet still Archie won’t, or can’t settle. His favourite job is surfing the kitchen counters to get his owners to give him attention, start another game, take him for another walk, because that’s what he needs right?

Jack Russell Bob is a bundle of endless energy. He jumps on furniture as if in training for the canine Olympic sofa jumping team. I was called to address Bob’s reaction to his owners leaving the house. A frenzy of barking, spinning and jumping has become frighteningly highly charged. Bob now reacts in the same way to any signal his owner gives which could mean they are leaving the house. If they close a window, or approach the door, if they put on outdoor shoes, or an extra layer, even if they’re going nowhere, Bob’s frenzy of behaviours is triggered. Bob’s owner walks him plenty and the house is full of chew toys lying around. His bowl was full of food when I visited. Everything a happy dog should need, no?

Transition Tips

Okay, so it isn’t quite instant karma, but it definitely is karma:  Adell Ziegler, the Buffalo man convicted of setting fire to the Jack Russell terrier puppy Phoenix two years ago, was found on a street with gunshots to his groin and buttocks.  It isn’t known if there is a connection between the incidents, but we can’t say we feel too sorry for him.

On October 6th, Ziegler was found in the 600 block of Humboldt Parkway with gunshot wounds to the butt and crotch area at 9:10 am.  He was taken to Erie County Medical Center and was listed in stable condition.

In October of 2012, Ziegler set fire to little Phoenix while his nephew Diondre Brown acted as a lookout.  Both pleaded guilty and were sentenced for their crimes.

Phoenix healed up nicely and was adopted by a vet technician who treated him at the Buffalo Small Animal Shelter.

Three people have been arrested and fifty dogs have been seized from a Tennessee home suspected of hosting a dog-fighting operation.  All of the pit bulls are now being properly cared for and evaluated.

After a four-month investigation by local authorities in Seiverville and the Humane Society of the United States, Mark Heatherly, his wife Kimberley and son Jacob have been charged with conspiracy to commit dog fighting.  They have also been charged with drug possession.

The rescued dogs range in age from four weeks to mid-teens.  Many have scarring consistent with fighting.

Sevier County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Michael Hodges said the interior of the house “looked basically like any other home,” with one dog wandering around freely, but dozens more were outside in deplorable conditions.

“When you see a piece of property that has 42 adult dogs chained up using a car axle to secure the chain in the ground they’re probably not raising pets,” Hodges noted.

“These 50 dogs are the lucky ones who no longer face life at the end of a heavy chain or worse — a bloody pit,” said Chris Schindler of the HSUS. “We are thankful to the Sevier County authorities for their efforts in this investigation and in forcing dog fighting out of their community.”

The dogs have been taken to a temporary shelter and are being given medical care and evaluations that will determine whether or not they are eligible to be adopted in the future.

“Dog fighting is a despicable crime that will not be tolerated in Sevier County,” said Sheriff Ron Seals. “We are grateful for the assistance and expertise of the Humane Society of the United States on this case, and glad to see these dogs off to better lives.”
