I’m gearing up to work on A Matter of Destiny for NaNoWriMo this year! So you intrepid followers who haven’t given up on me, thank you, and I hope to have more updates after that. Chapter 4 is mostly written except one scene, but I also just changed something so I need to proofread for elements this might effect.
I have to do some research for the part I’ll be working on for NaNo, which is killing me this time. I don’t usually mind research, but AMoD takes as much supplemental material as possible into account, with the exception of VS Astray, which is incompatible due to timeline changes I made. This means that I need to be careful when adding mobile suits and mechanical data from the Astray series.
I guess what I really need is someone to do my mechanical design for me. Ah well. I’ll soldier on for now. Wish me luck!

Dearka’s pining over Miriallia. He knows he is. The only way to change this fact is to cut in.
Chapter 3, Section 6: Friendship First
Dearka didn't get his own dance until much later in the evening. He had no interest in entertaining any other ladies (or gentlemen, but Dearka hadn't danced with a guy since lessons at the Academy, and had no intention of starting again). With Miriallia in attendance, he was too distracted to look at other women seriously. Sure, Murrue Ramius looked great and that halter-style top did amazing things to her bust, but if her and Lacus Clyne couldn't compare to the girl he really wanted to see again, how were these other socialites and soldiers dressed in silk going to measure up?
Actually, Section 6 of Chapter 3 is ready to go, so I’m posting two sections today! Give me a few minutes to do the formatting.

Yzak’s competitive spirit gets fired up over dancing.
Chapter 3, Section 5:Â Dancing King
Yzak had no idea what to say to Shiho. They'd socialized with some of the other guests separately, and then she joined him again. Now he struggling with words. Conversations on the ship were easy. He could talk about the state of the ship, how the mobile suits were doing, what their orders were. But there was no hiding in that at a party.

A Supreme Council member checks up on an old friend’s son.Â
Chapter 3, Section 4: Smiles Lost and Found
Louise Leitner was actually rather fond of parties, but the added pressure of being a Councilmember had made the last several a chore. Politics were forever, it seemed, and the stolen moments between were a welcome relief. For now, she was stealing a few moments for herself.
"Athrun Zala," she said with a soft smile. "You have grown into quite a gentleman."
I changed the timeline a little bit. It won’t affect anything that’s already posted, or the next handful of chapter sections, but I have to wiggle around a few things before I continue writing the rough draft.
Also I’m thinking of doing more of this story for NaNoWriMo this year~

The armistice ball is underway, but Kira yearns for friendly faces. Luckily he runs into a few.
Chapter 3, Section 3: Pink and Fizzy
It was about an hour later, and Kira Yamato looked at his sweetheart with panic in his eyes.
"But, but I don't know how to dance!" he blurted out.
"Oh my. That does put a damper on that plan, then," Lacus said. She looked thoughtful. "We'll just have to wait for a slow song, and I'll teach you a two-step on the fly!" She grinned brightly. Haro bounced at her side.
I didn’t realize it had been a whole year since I posted Chapter 3.1! I’m sorry! The time got away from me. I have a bunch more chapter sections written so I’ll try to be more timely.
This section had only a little light editing, so I’m sorry if it feels rough, but I wanted to get it out, and while it’s fun to write tough guys pining over girls sometimes, the particulars of this section are not crucial to the plot. And I swear there is a plot eventually! The relationship building in this first arc is to set up the world. Things change between the end of the second war and where the main story takes place, and this will get the characters there.
Chapter 4, for example, starts Lacus’s road to becoming a true political figure, and Athrun’s struggle to find a place in the world. Please look forward to it.

The armistice celebratory ball arrives, and Yzak is the one with a date- much to Dearka’s surprise. But Dearka may find that he’s happy going stag this time when he runs into an old flame.
Chapter 3, Section 2: Cordial Greetings
Dearka felt like a chauffeur. After he picked up Yzak and Shiho, Yzak had sat in the back with her rather than his usual spot in the passenger front. He tried to be understanding; Shiho dressed up was a pretty sight. But he hadn't signed on to be a driver or a chaperone, and he resented it a little.
"We're here. You gonna make me open the doors for you?" he said, not even trying to keep the bite out of his voice.

A new chapter, after so long! It’s a short one, my apologies, but it will get things moving again.
Section Summary: The armistice celebration arrives. Mu and Murrue come to pick up Miriallia, with the unintended effect of lightening things up.
Chapter 3, Section 1: Let’s Get This Party Started
Miriallia checked her hair one last time. It was hard to style short hair, but she liked the way it came out. She decided she was ready, and called Mu. "How's everything going over there?" she asked when he picked up.
"Good, good," he said. "Almost ready."
She could hear Murrue in the background. From her tone, she was scolding him. "What'd she say? I couldn't hear."
"Aha, nothing, don't worry about it! We'll be down to get you in a few!" And he ended the call. Miriallia blinked and hung up.
She didn't have to wait long. She checked her make-up and it seemed like they were at the door to her hotel room. "You look great!" she said. She meant it.
Murrue wore a wine-colored dress with a halter neckline that accented her figure, with a few simple pieces of jewelry in gold. Mu had coordinated with her and had a dark red rose on his boutonniere. He'd gotten a haircut, most likely earlier that day, and tamed his wild style somewhat. It made him look less like Neo Roanoke and more like the Mu Miriallia remembered.
"Sorry we're late," Murrue said. "Someone couldn't keep his hands to himself." She gave Mu a pointed look.
He held up his hands. "Hey, can you blame me?! You're gorgeous! You look good, too, little lady," he assured Miriallia, "but a man in a relationship's got to be biased."
"I understand," she said with a giggle. "Now, shall we get going so I can show off in front of someone who's not taken?"
Murrue chuckled. "Of course. Let's go. And no funny stuff in the car, mister!"
"I feel a bit picked on right now, you know. I only mentioned it once."
"Once is enough," Murrue assured him. She put her hands on his shoulders, turned him around, and marched him toward the door. Miriallia followed with a smile. Her cheeks were going to be sore from grinning at this rate, and it would be a welcome change from the weight of the last few months. She was looking forward to it.

New chapter section up, and I edited chapter 2.4 a little. You probably won’t even notice it.
I’m thinking of putting this up on my AO3 account. I kind of want to wait until I have more written in the rough draft, though, and then I can put it up full chapters at a time. But I only have through chapter 5 roughed out. I have no idea how many chapters this will be but it will be a LOT. Once the Interval of Peace is done setting up relationships and political climate, then we’ll get some overarching plot.
Well, one step at a time. I need to get that rough draft done first!

A brief interlude with Kira and Athrun. Some things never change. For Kira, that means Athrun being a mother hen.
Chapter 2, Section 5: New Office
"You're starting to look more comfortable," Athrun told Kira as they walked down the halls of the ZAFT Administrative building. Lacus had insisted on a trip to the store since she and Kira both had offices to decorate now, and they were taking some of those supplies to Kira's new office.
"I know how to get to and from the front door to my office. That's a step up from when I got here," Kira said wryly. "Yesterday I found the cafeteria and the first floor bathrooms. It felt like a victory."

In which Shiho determines she maybe might have a crush on her commander, and Yzak extends an invitation.
Chapter 2, Section 4: An Invitation
By lunchtime, the Voltaire was back to normal. Shiho told no one of her early morning encounter with the sleep-deprived Commander, and when he returned to the bridge, he was better rested and in his immaculate white uniform.
She had no intention of sharing the mental image of Yzak in a less than perfect condition with anyone. It was too cute, and something of him that she could keep for herself.

Chapter 2, Section 3: A Poor Simulation
Shiho Hahnenfuss prided herself on her intelligence. So when she walked onto the bridge of the Voltaire an hour early and her brain felt like it shut down, she was well and truly mortified. The sight of Commander Yzak Joule leaning over the strategy simulation table in a rumpled tee and what appeared to be flannel pajama bottoms would throw any ZAFT soldier off, though. Yzak Joule had never once been seen with his uniform in less-than-pristine condition since the day he first put on his Reds after his Academy graduation.
"Not a word, Shiho," he snapped. "I have been awake since three and I cannot get this simulation to run right, so any comments on my state of dress will be grounds for court martial."

"Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!” Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
There is a reference in an upcoming chapter where it would be useful if one knew their Poe.
I also enjoy references to The Cask of Amontillado, but that’s not in this story.
You're not over this person probably because they could never love you back the way you wanted them to, the way you needed them to.
Headcanon: This is Athrun to Lacus. Athrun never really got over the obligation of their arrangement and let himself love her. Lacus wanted to love him, and did, but let him go for both their hearts and sanity. And Athrun became the one she will never really get over.
She resents him for it at times. And he... well, he will eventually make some revelations about himself, and about her, and about not being so tunnel-visioned.
