13. A scrapbook of their favourite memories with you

An affogato is a scoop of ice cream inside a coffee cup with a shot of espresso. It’s very sweet drink, and Ryuko makes it for Mako every time they drop by the coffee shop. Mako loves it, and is one of the few things that Ryuko has seen them take their time eating.

They take their usual seat; stool at the far left on the coffee bar, where they could see Ryuko working, and at the same time take a peek at the customers that walk in.

But at the moment it’s empty, and the two datefriends are sharing a particularly large affogato that Ryuko had made special. Mako is feeding hir spoonfuls while they laugh and joke around, slipping an occasional kiss between the conversation.

"You always make this so good!!" They squeal, taking a spoonful for themselves. "Today it tastes especially yummy!"

"That’s cause I’ve got a surprise for you, and also because I added a few special ingredients," Ryuko says with a grin. "Ahem. So ya know how, uh, we’ve been together for like a year now?"

Mako looks up, eyes wide and the spoon still in their mouth. “We have?”

Ryuko nearly falls flat on hir face. It was expected of Mako to not keep track of how long it has been, but it still caught hir by surprise.

"Y-yeah. Anyways, I got you something for our anniversary."

"WE HAVE AN ANNIVERSARY??"

"Mako, focus," Ze chuckles, reaching for the present under the counter. "I made you something."

Ze puts a leather bound book in front of Mako, who ooohs and aaahs before opening it, and keeping unusually silent.

"I-it’s a scrapbook of us during this year, from our first date, to our trip to Tokyo Disney… Oh look, here’s is the first time I made you an affogato."

Ryuko looks nervously up at Mako, who has their eyes cast downwards, still keeping too silent for Ryuko to feel comfortable.

"Mako…."

"RYUKO!" They yell, making hir jump back. Tears quickly streamed down their face, sniffling as they threw themselves over the counter. "I’M SO SORRY I FORGOT ABOUT TODAY. BUT, BUT. MAKO REMEMBERS."

They cling to Ryuko, burying their face on hir shoulder. “Mako remembers every single memory of these pictures.”

"Like when you first made me an affogato, it was when we had our first real kiss… And Mako remembers that Ryuko tasted even sweeter than the drink."

They kiss Ryuko deeply, clinging even harder as Ryuko smiles and picks up hir datefriend.

Ryuko doesn’t mind it if Mako forgets a thousand anniversaries. Because they always remember the important details.
