Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov | Heated Rivalry | Season 1 - Episode 5
“That’s the best thing about language: every time you use a word you are summoning so many other things—all the times that word has ever been used. I know this sounds a little psychedelic, but maybe I have an ancestor one hundred years ago who used this word that I choose to write now. What does it mean that everything that we are writing is recycled? Words are full of ghosts. Poetry is full of ghosts.”
— Morgan Parker

I usually tell my students that “close reading” means looking at what is actually on the page, reading the text itself, rather than some idea “behind the text.” It means noticing things in the writing, things in the writing that stand out. To give you some idea of what this means, I’ve made up a list of five sorts of things that a close reading might typically notice: (1) unusual vocabulary, words that surprise either because they are unfamiliar or because they seem to belong to a different context; (2) words that seem unnecessarily repeated, as if the word keeps insisting on being written; (3) images or metaphors, especially ones that are used repeatedly and are somewhat surprising given the context; (4) what is in italics or parentheses; and (5) footnotes that seem too long. This list is far from complete—in fact, no complete list is possible—but the list is meant to begin to give you an idea of what sorts of things we notice when we’re doing close reading.
What all five of my examples have in common is that they are minor elements in the text; they are not main ideas. In fact, your usual practice of reading which focuses on main ideas would dismiss them all as marginal or trivial. Another thing they have in common is that, although they are minor, they are nonetheless conspicuous, eye-catching: they are either surprising or repeated, set off from the text or too long. Close reading pays attention to elements in the text which, although marginal, are nonetheless emphatic, prominent—elements in the text which ought to be quietly subordinate to the main idea, but which textually call attention to themselves.
Most of you have been educated to ignore such elements. You have been taught to seek out and identify the main ideas, dismissing the trivial as you go. This has had to be trained into you: read to a young child sometime, you will notice she has the annoying habit of interrupting the flow of the story to draw attention to some minor thing. Close reading resembles the interruptions of that child. It is a method of undoing the training that keeps us to the straight and narrow path of main ideas. It is a way of learning not to disregard those features of the text that attract our attention, but are not principal ideas.

Ilya: I submit to you as an empty vessel
Shane: I don't want that.
Ilya: No. You must honor my sacrifice by filling the vessel. Let's try again.
Ilya: I submit to you as an empty vessel.
Shane: I don't want that.
a private joke alexei & ilya; gen, 2.4k #the gaping wound of brotherhood, or something
the first thing they’ll tell you is that you look like your father.
You’re allowed to hate your brother. The world will understand if you hate him because he is a generational talent and pretty and well-fucked and well-liked—but not if it’s because he is your brother. There are only so many hours in a family’s day. You are five. Someone puts two dogs in a cage and hopes they don’t kill each other. You are thirty; you realize there is no key and no dogs and you call your brother and say, I need money. What you meant to say is: I have been thinking about dying and all the ways it comes to us, and then I thought of you dead, and it scared me, if only for a moment, to realize that even you could die, and that if you were to die then I would truly be alone in this world, even with my daughter, and my wife, I would feel a deep aching hole in my stomach between the liver and the heart, where you punched me for the first time, and it rattled all through my body until I shook so hard I broke your nose.

if shane and ilya ever do get divorced or even if they do a trial separation, that ottawa mcmansion is becoming a grey gardens style dilapidated haunted house as soon as shane turns out of the drive. the centaurs send a group to go check in on Roz and despite the fact that its been a week maximum, all the grass is knee high and there are cobwebs everywhere. Somehow dust has settled everywhere but especially on all their wedding photos. Windows are broken and chunks of plaster keep crumbling off the walls. Ilya keeps talking about the banging cabinets keeping him awake and how he keeps waking up at 3 am in the garden and that he has to keep an eye out for the tiger and no one knows if he’s still talking in metaphors because the other stuff must be a metaphor. And then news hits that he was mauled by a real tiger so maybe the other stuff was real too.
the centaurs also send a convoy over to shane’s rental property that he’s been staying in and there are a million candles in this minimalist condo and shane’s like “sorry there’s this like weird smell i can’t find the source of. like remember when LP hit that deer and the mechanic couldn’t get the blood out of the vent system but he also refused to get a new car so he just drove around with all his windows rolled down in the dead of winter because he needed to air out the dead deer smell? yeah, kind of like that.” and they go wow shane that sounds bad why don’t you go somewhere else and he goes “oh I checked out a different condo earlier but the smell was still there. Or like it started when i walked in. Yeah like I never noticed it before when i did inspections. Weird, huh? I gotta get my super on that. I mean it’s not the smell thats bugging me it’s the buzzing.” and then he doesn’t elaborate.
