hey, don't cry. fictional character in dire & perilous situations. ok?
no, presenting a familial interpretation of a dynamic as inherently flattened and boring and shitty and in some way Truly about a romantic relationship (to get a character out of the way of a different ship, to combat a ship, because you hate a ship, etc etc) is a really pithy and interesting and absolutely universally applicable take. there's totally inherently something worthy of sneering at there, and you should definitely be as mean and snarky as possible in your 100k+ note edgy post about it.
the fact that romantic relationships are posited as the true motivator for every single fandom behaviour is something you SHOULD uncritically promote regarding people's platonic dynamic interpretations, and also people who take a familial lens on a relationship definitely just can't understand that adults have friends. romantic relationships are absolutely above reproach though and will never be talked about like this in fandom and that's good and correct, it's only saying two or more characters are like family that is ever shitty and reductive and boring and whatever else you feel like being mean about. go offffffff.
the years have made me weird and strange to talk to. but still i must post

huge fan of when characters love each other and are closely bonded in an explicitly nonromantic way. however ☝️ i am very much not a huge fan of what happens when characters like this are introduced to fandom
people hated my other post about this but idc it needs to be said, but in your obsession with making platonic relationships into romance there is very much a loss of the depth that actually makes the original relationship interesting. and i feel like this is in part due to the idea of a relationship hierarchy and romance being "more than just friends" framing it as something added on top of an already existing relationship making it somehow inherently deeper and more meaningful, when in actuality romantic relationships and platonic relationships are just different relationships of equal importance with no difference in depth or meaning. romantic relationships can be shallow and fleeting or deep and lifelong and so can platonic ones. neither one is more important or better than the other and they aren't interchangeable either. if you change the relationship you are inherently altering the character dynamic and this is often not a good thing
I consider myself a real hater but sometimes you really do go too far with haterism. once I had to break mutuals with someone bc they hated the entire art form of poetry and the final straw was when they started hateposting about soup. The food
hi op. every time I see this post I hear it in her voice
in general if you want to enjoy your ships and romantic interpretations of character dynamics without running into the territory of amatonormativity and casual fandom arophobia i think a good standard approach is if you’re going to refer to the dynamic you see as romantic, there’s just no need to bring the idea of friendship or platonic relationships into it at all! i talk a lot about how people get very habitually and jokingly mean about nonromantic relationships in a way that’s really hurtful and upsetting to me as an aromantic person, and people often get very defensive in response, how it was just a joke, it’s not that deep, it’s just shipping, etc. so my best advice if you want to continue enjoying your ships and jokes and lighthearted fun in fandom without hurting aros and others who value nonromantic relationships, just stick to uplifting what you like, and not bringing up alternatives at all!
comments like “they were so in love here” or “they’re soooo gay for each other” or “this was so romantic” might be annoying to me on the basis of standard affection or care or whatever else, but that’s a me problem and there’s nothing harmful or wrong about it. just don’t bring platonic relationships or friendships into it, because at that point that’s where the shitty behaviour arises, because that’s where the purpose is almost always to put them down in comparison. i.e. “there’s no platonic explanation for this” or “who looks at a friend like that” or “sure they’re juuuust friends [based on some degree of intimacy or care or concern etc]”
you can have fun and enjoy your ships and make lighthearted jokes and posts without being amatonormative and casually arophobic!! it’s perfectly possible and easy. when in doubt you just don’t need to reference nonromantic relationships in your ship posts at all. celebrate what you enjoy! don’t put down what you don’t.
this includes if other people in your fandom are making posts about appreciating a friendship or seeing characters as having a sibling dynamic or something like that. you really really don't need to be making snotty posts about how SOME people see these characters as x relationship can you believe that. you can truly just leave other interpretations out of it. you can just talk about what you enjoy, you really do not have to be mean about it, especially when being mean about it in order to validate your ship runs directly into really really shitty territory wrt amatonormativity and arophobia often. just post about your ship. literally just post about your ship, it's that easy.
I HATE MORAL OCD. well i shouldnt say hate thats a strong word. and i dont want to sound like i hate people WITH moral ocd because i dont of course. i just hate having it. but i shouldnt think that, i do like having morals, its just stressful to be thinking about them so constantly and scrutinizing every little thing i do or think. but really thats the least i could do so i should at least try, right? just because i suffer from— no, struggle with moral ocd doesn’t mean i should just stop thinking about things all together, thats not what im saying and i should make that clear, but i
people love to be like aro and ace people are uniquely responsible for homophobia actually

when you get crazy enough about The Character you'd think the situations you imagine them in would get more elaborate and lore intensive. but no. imagining my wizard pacing around huffily being slightly peeved at a mild inconvenience. I don’t even know what the inconvenience IS. and it's giving me enough joy to power a city for a month
you understand this post more than anyone else
“wow look at that, it’s a great day to think and write and read about platonic sex” me on a day ending in y
That tag sent me
hate the weird self-infantalizing “but i’m just playing with my dolls” shit people will pull in response to any critique of overall fandom trends, especially wrt racism, misogyny, transphobia, etc. very embarrassing to be a grown ass adult yet still so myopic and devoid of self-reflection
like in a way i do sympathize because being told that your thoughts and beliefs are more often a product of your context and not individual impulse is uncomfortable but at that point you have either the choice to put your head in the sand or take a minute to consider these things more deeply and it seems pretty clear to me which option is the more mature one

not even kidding be SO earnest. Be so honest and forthcoming about your life, your feelings in the pursuit of connection with others, and know being as earnest as possible in your experience is what quells loneliness in those who feel the same way as you do. Is what helps us feel seen. And builds community and resolve within the fact it doesn't have to feel so lonely and insurmountable. we need community and connection. You really are not as alone as you think, we're all scared. we need to hold each others hands
