people complaining about ao3 site ânot looking aesthetically prettyâ is so funny to me because itâs super clear these people are used to wattpad and other social media platforms where you can have aesthetic layouts, but what they fail to understand is that ao3 is an archive. itâs a library with the purpose of keeping/storing/archiving fanworks. itâs not a social media.
also, you can technically make your ao3 page look aesthetically pretty by applying your own customized skin/layouts on your own ao3 page. according to people who use their own customized skins, itâs easy once you learn how to do it (I personally donât know how to do it because Iâm not interested in learning or applying any fancy skin, and I just use dark mode there) it may not be as easy as decorating twitter or wattpad layout, but thatâs because the purpose of ao3 is to archive fanworks, not to be a place for users to show their aesthetic layouts.
once again, ao3 is a non-profit organization, an anti-censorship archive/library that welcomes all kinds of fanfics/fanworks. it doesnât prioritize âlooking aesthetically prettyâ because looking aesthetically pretty like a social media platform has never been relevant to its purpose.
hereâs the list of things you need to know if youâre new to ao3

"Is it a sin to feel superior to an imbecile?" is one of those things I need framed on my wall.
reiterating this point here
ao3 is an incredibly simple website, if you struggle so much that you deem it unusable then you may need to educate yourself of the bare basics of how the internet works

so let me get this straight
wattpad essentially banned smut, triggering a lot of users to flood AO3 seeking a new place to enjoy free and uncensored fanfictions
only for some of them to report fics they deem "unethical" and "inappropriate"
am I
am I getting this right??
If people are leaving Wattpad because of the censorship, then coming to AO3 only to beg for censorship what's the point? Itâs called Archive of Our Own for a reason, it is ours. For us and by us.
Because apparently it needs to be spelled out, Iâm writing out some of the unwritten rules of AO3:
Don't like, don't read - you can have your own opinions but if you don't like it just scroll past, it's that easy. Let it be.
Read. The. Tags. - the tags are warnings of what the story will include. That is your guide. If there is something you're not comfortable with in the tags then scroll past. The AO3 tagging system is genius and lets you filter out the things you donât like, so you donât even have to see the stories you might not be comfortable with if you donât want to. Use the tags.
Do not spread the stories outside of fandom spaces - fanfiction is for the fans. Especially when itâs RPF it is not to be referenced or brought up to the people who it is about. They are all very aware that it is made but that doesnât mean they want to read it or know about it. I donât care what you say, it is unavoidable and as long as it is not widespread and stays in its own space it is not harmful. It is up to the fans to respect that. (That being said if the people who the RPF fics are about search them up or reference fics themselves thatâs a bit different and the rules change a bit.)
Respect the authors - the authors spend their own time writing stories, many of which are genuinely incredibly written and well thought out, for absolutely nothing in return. You get to read pieces of work for free by authors who are doing it for free. Do not go to the comments and complain or say they should have done something else or report because they wrote something youâre not comfortable with. And respect the authors wishes when they say not to share their work anywhere else.
Basically just respect fandom spaces, keep them separate from reality, and mind your own business. Itâs so easy.
Itâs a very under-appreciated thing to have an archive where people can put their work out for the world to see and make art that can be appreciated and easily accessed by other people on a wide scale, and it needs to be protected.
This cannot be left in the tags
kissies for us meeses
since wattpad is fucked and banned smut, heres sum for your troubles a badge you can put in your bio. đ

Imo the best type of system for children to grow up in would be one that assumes the birth parents/primary guardians won't do shit and takes care of every aspect of childcare that's essential for their wellbeing and development, collectively.
But I'm just a guy who only learned how to brush his teeth properly and got glasses as a child because we had both a dentist and a doctor come to school on a regular basis. The dentist would have us all stand in a circle with our little toothbrushes and show us how to brush and correct our technique. The doctors would give us general health assessments and then have the teachers contact our patents and essentially peer pressure them into getting us any health intervention we needed. My parents only reluctantly got me glasses because they knew the teachers would judge them if they kept seeing me sit in the very front row and still squint to see the chalkboard. So I'm biased.
The only times I ever remember seeing a dentist or doctor as a child was at school. I'm quite healthy physically and I'm very grateful for all the care I got from the various professionals who cared about my well-being and development more than my actual parents did.
We had free healthcare including dental, mind you, my parents just couldn't be bothered. When my brother, as a teenager, asked our mother if she could take him to his orthodontist appointments (which he'd already arranged for on his own) she basically told him she didn't feel like it and he had to take the bus.
If I could improve anything about that system, I'd take it even further and make it so kids could see a doctor and get meds, treatments, therapy, tests, disability aids etc. without having to rely on their parents as well. I shouldn't have had to put up with being bullied and guilt-tripped about the family finances and the time investment needed to take me to the optometrist every time I needed new glasses.
Some parents would not take care of their children even if they were given all the time and the resources. Mine are a great example of that â my mother stopped working and became a homemaker when I was in kindergarten, my father worked from the garage and was also always home. They had a car and our village even had a bus that would come once or twice an hour that would take you to the next two bigger cities.
Did that, plus the free healthcare, translate into them actually parenting and caring for us properly? It did not. They only ever did any of that reluctantly when not doing it would make them look bad, and most of the time they did a shitty job because they could never resist the urge to boost their egos by means of bullying literal children.
So I have to wonder: what did they actually contribute to our upbringing? Like they didn't teach us shit and mostly they just endangered our mental and physical health â but hey, at least they gave me cPTSD! That took some work too.
see also family abolition, and youth liberation .
A knee-jerk response to neglectful parenting I see a lot is âpeople should have to get licenses and take rigorous tests to PROVE that they should be ALLOWED to have kidsâ which is eugenics. Thatâs just the starting line for eugenics.
We are at a point in humanity where there is no meaningful reason why we shouldnât be structuring our societies around wellbeing for all instead of wellbeing for the âdeservingâ.
Assume some parents will fail. Build social infrastructure that is designed to support failed kids rather than punish would-be parents.
Parents do not have to be neglectful to fail!
They can be busy, tired, stressed about finances, ignorant, etc. They can want to do the best for their kid and Fail Anyways.
The best thing is to support the children and give them the tools they need to succeed even if the parents are already giving them those tools. Because you can never learn something too much.
Also sometimes parents become disabled or die and family can't always be counted on, and sometimes there isn't other family
it's cool how in the 6 years since this tweet was written it's become significantly less useful not because anything has gotten better but because the majority of products on Amazon are now from fly-by-night brands called "ZZPORK" and "GLUM4PANT"
I don't have time for tumblr discourse they're calling the very hungry caterpillar degenerate art over on twitter
good art is when something looks like real life, the more real it looks the more better the art. abstracted figures give my trad children nightmares, one time they were exposed to cubism and couldn't go outside for a week
Huh fascinating, I wonder what the fash have against Eric Carle? I wonder what he might have said about his life, and influences, and early experiences that makes them say heâs part of an âinsalubrious cultureâ?
Franz Marc (1880-1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of the German Expressionist movement.
^ See THIS, THIS PART, I caught myself still having that immediate reaction of 'Wow, these are dumb and unserious people', and it's ALWAYS SOMETHING DEEPER AND MORE SINISTER.

we as a society have GOT to accept that it is okay if we get blocked. you do not have the right to interact with every single person on the internet. "but then i can't interact with their content" yes that is the point "but i didn't do anything" no one owes you an explanation and you don't have to have "done something" to be blocked. let it go

they should invent a term for shipping were I don't think they should be in a romantic relationship however I believe they are each others parasite and separating them is not an option
pouring one out for the AO3 Abuse Team people who will be flooded with false reports from Wattpad refugees about "disgusting" tags
