Say youโre moving to a new school. The principal is a very kind guy, and he says to his students โWe shouldnโt bully, we shouldnโt judge, we shouldnโt get revenge because I donโt do that, and if I can hold it back, you can too.โ He preaches about kindness and respect.
But then there comes a teacher and she bullies a student. Then comes another teacher and he judges everyone and throws insults their way. And there comes third teacher and he holds grudges and always gets his revenge. At this point, once you annoy him, he will hate you forever. None of them forgive.
Now you donโt want to move in that school anymore, do you? And you start doubting the principal because what if he is lying just for his image? What if heโs lying just to uplift his reputation? Even if heโs being truthful and actually is that kind, why does it matter? I mean, you donโt encounter him unless youโre brought to him, and these teachers donโt bring you to him, they judge and punish you on their own instead, they go against the principalโs wishes.
And the principal knows this, but he is so kind that he cannot fire any of the teachers, he constantly gives them second, third, seventy-third chances so they can change, yet they donโt change. But eventually, time will come and they will depart from him, since thereโs only so much time the teachers can spend in that school.
Now picture it this way: teachers are us - Christians, students are every other people and the principal is Jesus. When we insult nonbelievers, when we judge nonbelievers, when we threaten and bully them, the only thought entering their heads are: โso Jesus is this evil huh, then I donโt want to follow him.โ
So, the moral of the story is that nonbelievers look at us - Christians, the way we act, the way we think because we resemble Jesus Christ, the same way teachers resemble the principal.
