In the best-known version of the myth, Narcissus was a beautiful young man who was admired by many people, but he rejected everyone who loved him.

One of those people was Echo, a mountain nymph. Echo had been cursed by Hera so that she could no longer speak freely; she could only repeat the last words someone else said. When Echo fell in love with Narcissus, she tried to approach him, but he rejected her cruelly. Heartbroken, she faded away until only her voice remained — which is where the idea of an “echo” comes from.

Because Narcissus was so cold and arrogant toward those who loved him, the gods decided he should experience the same kind of impossible love. He was led to a pool of water, where he saw his own reflection and fell completely in love with it. He did not understand that the beautiful person in the water was himself.

Every time he tried to touch the reflection, it vanished. Still, he could not leave. He stayed beside the pool, staring at his own image, unable to eat, sleep, or move on. Eventually, Narcissus wasted away and died there. In some versions, the narcissus flower grew where his body had been.
