and one of the best parts is that unlike basically every other way to store energy, when a leak happens you don't need hazmat and concrete sarcophaguses, you just send a guy a with a mop (sometimes you have to wait for it to cool down a bit first).

crafters often refer to this collection as a "stash" or a "hoard."

it's normal to have, but sometimes comes with a certain awkwardness.

the problem is that it takes a very long time to make things from textiles - and it is extremely quick, fun and easy to get more materials.

Presents, impulse purchases, leftovers from other projects, things you bought FULLY intending to make something that you changed your mind about...

Another problem is that you genuinely DO have a plan for the materials! your intentions and desires are THERE!

and admitting that it isn't going to happen - or that your mind has changed, or you're no longer able to do them - can be really painful!

it's incredibly hard to say: "we are not the people who can do these things. we are not the people who WILL do these things."

but sometimes you need to.

it's a natural part of life. it might feel painful to let go of things that you really want to use, but won't. But clearing them out - and the attached guilt and shame - will make room for a lot more things in your life. Room for things you'll use. Room for the projects you'll do.

Room and space - not for hanging on to the shades of the ambitions and intentions and people you aren't - not being held for lives you don't have - but room and space for who you are today, and who you'll be tomorrow, and for the things you'll do.

But the real reason I'm recommending her is because she does what the movie does: celebrates southern American music in all its forms. On her first solo album she did covers of Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton alongside covers of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Elizabeth Cotten and Geeshie Wiley (also of the Sinners soundtrack).

My favorites from the album (though every song is wonderful) are:

"Waterboy" (by an immigrant Jewish songwriter who wrote for vaudeville and collaborated with Langston Hughes)

"Black Is the Color" (we love an Appalachian folk song with a beatbox!)

"Round About the Mountain (The Lord Loves a Sinner)" which would make for an INCREDIBLE Sinners fanvid....

Her second album is more explicitly political and explores many different moments in Black American history.

On this one she covers songs by Mississippi John Hurt, Richard Fariña, and Roebuck Staples, but she wrote most of the songs herself. Several of the songs are about the dangers of being a black man in contemporary America and she's got an excellent New Orleans-tinged cut or two, but my favorites are:

"At the Purchaser's Option," a title taken from an ad for an enslaved woman that said the baby could be sold with the mom or left behind "at the purchaser's option"

"Come Love Come," which sounds like it belongs on the Sinners soundtrack

And after you've listened to her solo stuff, check out her early work with Carolina Chocolate Drops for some old-time covers of R&B hits and Tom Waits songs and traditional bluegrass songs.

if you've ever enjoyed my fanfic, particularly stories like What We Pretend We Can't See and I've Got Nothing to Do Today But Smile, then you'll love FALL INTO YOU. it's full of ROMANCE and JOKES but also REAL, MESSY PEOPLE with PROBLEMS and TRAUMA, because those are the stories i love telling! it's chock full of things i adore: set on an APPLE FARM in NORTHEAST OHIO, main characters who hate each other more or less immediately, gratuitous depictions of food, and they were ROOMMATES?, people healing wounds they didn't even know were still open, AND MORE.

i'll be sharing more about this book in the weeks to come (i promise i will try so hard not to be obnoxious about it 🫡 ), and about the next two as we get closer to publication! but until then, i just want to say: the fic stays UP and the author stays GRATEFUL, always. i am honored and humbled by your readership, and really proud of the work i've done for and with fandom, and that's not a tune you're ever going to see me change.

when I drew this comic 3 years ago I had NO idea how far it would reach. I'm happy to finally share a corrected version with proper abbreviations, and even MORE state names of indigenous origin ♥️

however, the goal of this comic was to inspire people to do your OWN research on indigenous history. To question everything we have been taught, and everything that has been pointedly left out. This erasure, this “forgetting”, of history is not just of the past… it is happening now. - Across so-called Canada, the US, and US-occupied islands, native women are victims of murder at 10-12x the rate of non-native people, and are the most likely to go missing without being searched for by the law. - Native reservations have the highest rates of poverty in the US, with over HALF of tribal homes with no access to clean water (with more joining this list by the year) - Native people are 6-10x more likely to be unhoused than the rest of the population, and native teens suffer suicide rates higher than any other demographic. This list of modern day genocide goes on (thank you for compiling @theindigenousanarchist <3) and yet take a look at those environmental stats!

Native people manage to do SO much for the planet as a whole - thanklessly - and with all this stacked against them. Don't even get me started on kin fighting in south america. Could you imagine if there was help? #landback is resistance to genocide, and it is the key to saving our warming earth.

So look into it and the other hashtags, cuz a cartoon goose ain't a substitute for a proper education. Love to my grandparents who always kept a map of tribal territories of turtle island on their wall, to speaking on our Tsalagi & Saponi heritage.
