A short story: 17 years ago I was the editor of a very small and mostly insignificant magazine called Transworld Stance. Somehow I managed to arrange an interview with Tinker Hatfield and Sandy Bodecker. The premise of the article doesn’t matter but its publication would change my life forever. In it, Sandy made the first official announcement that Nike was getting back into skateboarding. This was before any ads and before anyone saw a pair of Dunks. I have no idea how many people saw the magazine or read the article—I just knew that Sandy was the real deal and I wanted a piece of the action. After it came out, we kept in touch and nine months later I was on my way to Portland to work with him and his crew. The news of Sandy’s passing is a shocking blow to a lot of people, myself included. In the coming days and weeks, much will be written about his legacy. I am just happy that I got the chance to work with the man. His drive, work ethic and most of all, his ability to DO what others thought impossible ... the lessons learned are too numerous to count.
