by rule, he always tried to stay away from anyone who could have ties with his family, but since their run with @allexandrianrejects, he kept finding projects and ideas he wanted to share with her. having the knight around was like having sister that actually wanted to spend time with him. or a college friend. or a mind partner.
he still wasn't sure what they were to each other, but whatever it was, it felt more confortable with each passing day.
of course, it's her who ends up saying it. “ the more i get to know you, the more i keep noticing little similarities between the two of us. ” she says one night, as they review several sketches of what could be an armor for pin.
" i know! it's wild to me that we didn't get a proper chance to meet earlier, " he responds, perhaps a little too excited. he lowers his eyes, fixes them on the scribbled pages all around them. " it's a shame they never let you go to the penteveral, " he sighs, a little more somber " something tells me you would've been a great student. "
She’d laid out her preliminary sketches between them, vests of leather and concepts for a sort of light chainmail— more protective, but it was possibly going to be too heavy for the little creature. It was a risk. Either way, they also needed measurements made and materials procured. Her pen became her tool of demonstration as she outlined benefits and drawbacks to her liege.
The Seremai had never expected his kindness, never expected him to see her as anything more than a tool. It seemed perhaps it was closer to friendship. Her heart swelled at the idea that Occtis perhaps liked spending time with her, discussing projects and intellectual pursuits. Maybe he even felt the same; they were both sheltered children, neither was ever rewarded for being loyal to their families. Occtis had taken that as a sign to leave… Circe, perchance, was following that path too.
“I’m quite a bit younger than my brothers. Aniko was ten years older than me, and Belos is freshly thirty. …they’ve always been protective, as our parents were. They didn’t want me distracted from my work,” she said, as if that explained everything. Still, she sighed. “I always thought learning more would make me a better asset. …I wonder if we would have been friends if we met at the Penteveral.”
A body tumbled into the foxhole beside them, no more than six feet away. At first, Talon presumed the person was dead, the way they landed so harshly, but soon enough the soldier— a young dark haired man —was starting to scramble for their weapon. All attempts at getting up were cut short by noises of pain, falling down once more. The young druid crept closer, now close enough to see that the padded and leather armor was emblazoned with the crests of Royce and their vassal house. …not the worst enemy to be trapped in a hole with, and clearly, he was too injured to move.
Even if he was an enemy, it wasn’t fair to leave him here to die, was it?
They knelt just out of reach of him, for now, to get the measure of him. “Took a bad fall there, fey knight,” they murmured softly, showing their open palms. “Would you let me look at your leg?” (allexandrianrejects) ((child soldiers <3))
Julien Davinos was sixteen years old when he knew he was going to die. One careless step—careless, you’re so damn careless you’re going to get yourself killed one day! Idiot boy—and the sky disappeared, boot giving way at the ankle, a sharp pain that made everything else that followed fuzzy and instant. He gasped for air, blinking away black spots from his vision. Dirt on his cheek, his hands. The world was sideways—no, he must be lying down.
He pushed himself upright and immediately collapsed as a nauseating pain consumed him. He couldn’t even tell where it came from, just that if he put pressure that way, he would surely pass out.
Then there were footsteps. Damn it, pay attention brat—he’d forgotten to check his surroundings. Where the hell was his weapon? From his position in the dirt he could see the tattered uniform of the rebellion, the enemy of everyone he had ever loved. He caught the glint of his sword and lunged for it desperately, drawing it up to swipe at the air before them.
“Stay the fuck away!” He shouted, chest heaving. His arm shook terribly at the pain of keeping this position. It was his leg, maybe, at the hip. Something was wrong with it, and worse, something was wrong with his other ankle. He couldn’t put any pressure on either of them without immense pain. He swung at them again, just for good measure. He had to keep the enemy at bay, had to survive as long as possible, to do as much damage as he could, hope he could scare them off.
His mother was right. He was an idiot, and now it would get him killed.
He panted hissing, strained breaths through his teeth. “I’ll kill you, I’ll kill you.” Never make it easy. A Davinos fights, wild to the bitter end.
"Don't move too much. The bones'll shift. ...makes it harder to heal." Talon's voice was even, like the shepherd trying to gain the trust of a lost lamb. Their lilt cracked slightly, a hint of nerves as he swung his rapier at them. They had half a mind to grab at the sword's blade in an attempt to stop him, but he figured there would be little to stop him from wrenching it away and slicing up their hands; it was his legs that were injured, not his arms. He could kill them if he wanted, but it would likely kill them both. Unless someone knew to look, he'd be stuck in this hole with their dead body with festering wounds. No food, no water.
They didn't want to hate him. He was as young as them, a child of a vassal house. He was not one of the nobles who had toasted at the massacre of druids. That day, he would have been just a child, like them. Surely he fought because that was what he knew. Could they fault another teenager, near tears of pain, even as he threatened their life?
"I'm not going to hurt you. I can heal. Not much, yet but... I'm training under those of my grove. I can fix your legs." It sounded too hopeful for two soldiers covered in dirt, two soldiers of opposite sides. They were proud to be only a teenager and already capable enough to mend breaks. That wasn't a common occurrence from what they knew. "I'll need to touch you... but I can heal you. And if you kill me, I can't help you out of this hole. I promise I will. No reason for us to kill each other in an unfair situation."
Their violet eyes trained on him, shaking slightly under the duress of lowlight, of focusing to make out his facial features, his expressions. Talon had to pray this boy would make the decision to save both of their lives.

he doesn't dare to look up to meet the druid's eyes. the last time he was faced with members of their circles they had treated him with nothing but hostility, now he doesn't even has thaisha's support.
" do i frighten you? " he asks very quietly, and waits for @allexandrianrejects' judgment.
"You seem to expect me to be," they replied softly, violet eyes training on his gaunt, haunted face. Perhaps they wondered to themselves what the boy would have been if they met him alive. Their feelings for the Sundered Houses had never been positive, but in recent days, they seemed to be meeting more of their cast-offs, the children of their families that have been hurt. Talon sighed and thought a moment before they continued.
"Would it be wrong of me to say you fascinate me? You're undead, perhaps. But you think and feel... you fear my judgement." A knuckle presses against his chin, raising his head up. "You're as frightened of me as you think I am of you."

his entire body aches. koral, despite his family's reputation and his own tendency to get absorbed into his research, is not a man unaccustomed to movement, to physical strain, but to have his body be constantly assaulted by movements he has no control over, by feet that won't stop dancing no matter how he tries and tries to stop, was something else entirely. he's just happy the curse is broken; even if he still has no idea how it broke, even if the last thing he remembers is being strapped to his own bed as it spun through the air and the flash of the davinos' sword as it connected with his skin. he remembers the darkness, and then he remembers his mother's hands on his face, waking him up. " mother, mother, " he intones, voice rough and strained as he leans away from her outstretched hands. " i'm fine, i told you. it's fine, i'm alright. "
"Don't strain yourself, Koral, dear. You're still regaining your strength," she replied softly, reaching out again, but only to brush his damp hair off of his forehead. She moved her hand away, though seemed to make no move to get up from the chair she'd pulled next to his bed. Her own voice was hoarse, red rimmed around her eyes.
“You know your father has told me so little about these grand plans— killing Occtis and sending you and your brothers across this Shaper-Forsaken land on these missions. And we so recently lost poor Frons.” Two of her sons had already been killed, one by the family’s own hand. Neither body was recovered… her youngest son’s was still walking around. Even if Koral had died in the house, who knew how long it would be before someone deigned to tell her? "I'm sorry if I'm perhaps a little overbearing. ...as much as I've been distant, I do worry my children, especially when they've been so near death."
“You know I’m no good for you…so why are you here?”
It was their his their hangout spot, an abandoned old mill on the outskirts of town. Revelry sat leaned up against the splintery fence, wishing for all the world that the guy at the top of his shit list wasn’t walking up the path towards him. The night was cold, but the simmering of his anger kept him warmer than the jacket over his shoulders. It had been just over one week.

"My mother and I got into a fight. Needed to get away from the Palazzo." The fuck off was implied, but Nikola didn't want to lead with that. After all, it was Nikola's sharp tongue that got them into the situation that led to their breakup almost a fortnight ago. The bard shook his head, pulling the green velveteen of his dressing gown tighter to his body to keep the chill of night out. Seeing Revelry when he was in his night clothes, barefooted, wasn't exactly the reintroduction he wanted after their fight. He felt a bit pathetic.
"Ilondria told me the rumor was you were being sent to school, wherever it is Luxes are trained." She'd even specifically told Nikola that Revel was being sent away. At least in his mind, away meant out of the city, and there'd be time before they say each other again, if they ever did. "Is our dear Ilondria getting bad information, or is the training not so private as we dim folk are led to believe?"
Revelry heard the *fuck off* loud and clear, you don’t spend that much time at the Palazzo Davinos without learning *that* look. He grunted, gestured with his chin to his side. An invitation. Cold, but neutral.
He wasn’t an asshole, he got having a fucked up family and needing an escape. He won’t deprive him of this refuge, even if he couldn’t stand to look at his pretty face. In the corner of his eye, though, he recognized the green of his dressing gown. He’d freeze out here tonight in just that. Must have been a bad fight…
He bit back a question. Let the silence hang in the air. They weren’t together anymore, and they certainly weren’t friends. He shouldn’t ask about the fight. Nikola had clearly wanted nothing to do with him the last time they saw each other, and the feeling was mutual—except that they were still both here. Seeing flashes of Nikola’s irritation, of his pain, with no easy solution made him uncomfortable, so he made sure to face forward, looking out over the forest below.
Revel scoffed, rolled his eyes. “Yeah? Figures they’d tell you before they tell me their plans. Fuckin’…” He grumbled to himself, the coals in his stomach only flaring.
Nikola sighed as joined Revelry, hopping up onto the fence to join him. Glancing over at him briefly, he considered saying something, making some sort of peace offering after what was said. After all, he was sure the irony was not lost on his ex, that despite his decree of ultimately being aligned with his family, the Davinos was still running from disagreements with his mother. Of course,he also couldn’t imagine Revelry was completely unaware that Nikola’s penchant of saying hurtful things was learned behavior— Maya Davinos’ tongue was as sharp and silvered as her husband’s gauntlet.
He looked away like a petulant child.
“She heard from your cousin Zebani’s handmaiden, who I believe heard from your father and grandmother. I’d claim idle chatter, but this doesn’t seem like the sort of thing that’d titillate the rumor mill… unless you’re being sent away because of me.” Not impossible. His own mother had threatened uprooting him from Dol-Makjar and even from his siblings to spend extended time at the Golden Orchard. But when it came down to it, the Orchard was much more pleasant than Lux school, he was sure. “I take it you’re not happy to join the family charlatan act?”
Revelry shot a glare out into the tree line, hurt. “You forfeited all claim to my heart. Don’t put your hand out for it now.” A little bit of relief, like steam escaping from a kettle. The irony of the situation was not lost on him, and it only sharpened the sting of hearing his sweet voice again, asking after him with that uncomfortable thickness in the air between them. How cruel, to pretend to care now.
He should just go. But something rooted him to the spot, a painful little anchor reminding him how much more relief he needed, how badly he wanted it from the one person who had actually understood him—or pretended to. Maybe if he could get proof one way or the other, the ache where Nikola should be would die down. “Was that even ever your intention? Or was I just a pretty thing to get in trouble with, until I was too much trouble for your sterling image?”
To say he was reaching a hand out was perhaps inaccurate. Nikola wasn't entirely sure, not really knowing what he wanted to do. Perhaps he wanted familiarity and comfort after the reopening of wounds. Perhaps putting himself in Revel's arms, nearly dropping himself into his lap, would provide that. ...still, he wasn't dumb enough to try it when the electric tension between them remained so tangible.
"You know that's not true, Reveluccio," he said softly, allowing himself to use the pet name he'd given his ex. A sign, perhaps, of lingering affection. His heart seized in his chest. "If I wanted that, it'd be quicker and easier just to follow my brother back to Castle Torch— I'm sure there's those knights who would indulge me. ...you're someone I can talk to. Someone I enjoy being with without the trouble, without you sneaking into my bedroom at night."
Nikola paused, finally looking over at the plane of Revelry's face. The confession, the apology, had already gone this far; he may as well clamp his teeth down on the blade and keep going. "I'm sorry I acted like an ass. I... I go for the throat even when I have no reason to, and I know I need to watch my tongue."
The pet name was a splash of cool water over the coals in his chest, steam filling his lungs instead of air. He took a moment to catch his breath, faltering. The apology that followed seemed unfinished, so he waited a beat for a demand that didn’t come. It was his turn to speak and he’d already waited too long.
“I mean yeah, it’s. You know. It’s whatever.” He shrugged it off, still unable to meet his gaze. “Not like you said anything you didn’t mean, so…”
What the hell was this? What did he want? Revelation had tensed up for a hit that hadn’t come yet, so, when would it? Maybe he could goad it into coming faster, so it couldn’t catch him by surprise. But thinking over his words, catching the little intricacies…he couldn’t bear to say anything at all. Nikola said all those nice things about him in the present tense. If this flattery was just a twist of the knife then he had no recourse against it. Nikola could talk him into anything.
Suddenly the argument they’d had felt fresh again, and instead of spite to shield him, he felt vulnerable, exposed. He couldn’t muster up the bitterness to protect himself, not when he could feel his ex lover’s eyes on him, so he had no way of stopping the tightness in his chest, the tears that sprang to his eyes.
"I was angry. I know it's no excuse but... you know my family. Whatever gets your point across, even if you lie a little, even if you hurt them." Nikola didn't know how much his parents meant in arguments, if the words disappointment or selfish brat really were how they felt about him or his brother. It seemed sometimes that Alba and Chiara were regarded more delicately, but they weren't safe with certain heated discussions were had. Nikola gave a shaky sigh. "I said what I did to get a rise, not because I really feel it, not as anything more than a flash when I was feeling hurt."
Maybe he wanted to continue, say he didn't think Revel was bad for him, say he did care for him. He wasn't sure if that was what he wanted to say or what he thought Revel wanted to hear. Maybe it was both. The feelings were murky when his ex boyfriend was involved. He was never sure if he was on the backfoot or completely in control until several minutes into a conversation. Maybe that was because of all the strong personalities around him who knew how to speak, how to play people like fiddles... with Nikola the one quickly becoming the master violinist of the family.
The dim evening light caught the tears glinting in Revelation's eyes, and the bard's breath hitched. "There's no need to cry, please. I mean what I'm saying now. I've thought... I'm not saying it in anger or in the heat of a moment. My meaning is true." His hand reached out, finding the Halovar's.
His head immediately ducked down, hand moving to wipe his tears before it was caught. Nikola’s hands were gentle, with callouses on the fingers from years of playing the yarting. As the wind chilled the exposed skin of their hands, Revelry felt relief in the warmth of him, of this gesture. He curled hesitant fingers around his, surprised when the bard allowed it to happen.
Still, he scrubbed at his eyes with his other hand, balled into a fist. His voice was choked with emotion. “I won’t, sorry, I’m not.” He took a deep breath, feeling the stretch of his guilt and grief settle over his ribs. “Sorry.” He attempted to swallow the feeling back down, but the relief of it was still there, and so was the ache: Nikola didn’t hate him. They could still talk.
He huffed a laugh, still unable to look him in the eyes but unwilling to let go of his hand. “I was an ass too, so. It’s fine. We were both stupid about it.”
Nikola couldn't help but smile as his hand was taken, relishing the soft warmth of another person so close. A shiver ran down his spine, and his body responded with a small shake, the peek of his arm visible underneath his dressing down growing goosebumps and the hair standing on end. "You don't need to apologize for it. I just don't like to see you cry," he told him. He gave his hand a squeeze.
"It's easy to be stupid when you're surrounded by stupid people your whole life," he offered with an odd laugh of his own, before biting his lip. "I won't say we have to get back together, or even that we should. ...I'm not going to put that on you. I don't want to force anything or try to make it seem like what happened the other night never happened. But I want to be friends again, Revel. I've missed you."
Dark brown eyes traced the curve of Revelry's face, the way his multicolored hair shone in dim light. "Can we be friends again at least?"

The body was squeezing itself in the middle, muscles clenched and slowly grinding. It had been doing this for a good while, but the feeling had only gotten stronger over time. Uncomfortable, Bud told the lips to frown and the brow to crease. These were the upset signs.
“It looks like it’s going to rain.” It turned to Victor, speaking what it had been told was Common. An instinct, one that it had no reason to discontinue, despite not knowing what it had just said. He knew it would get Victor’s attention, that it was a way to voice its displeasure.

Since it was known that the thing inside Julien was not currently Julien, every time he spoke in Common, there was a collective jump. Not that Victor figured that the real Julien's first words would be anything other than what the fuck. It was still the being he'd somewhat accidentally named the nickname one gave pets and children. The warlock's eyes drifted over to see the frown on the lips, a furrowed brow. The words it spoke certainly wasn't what it was getting at, knowing it barely understood anything at all of Common.
"You don't have to speak in Common with me, you know," he began, attempting to sound as smooth and gentle in the guttural Demonic language as he could. It sounded so alien on his tongue; it was never meant to be spoken by mouths with blunt tongues and flat teeth. Ruddy eyes ran up and down Julien's body, attempting together what Bud was upset about. "What's upsetting you?"
“Know, yes.” Bud put a hand to Julien’s stomach, dropping Common for Infernal, its native tongue. “Something wrong inside. Hurts, in Julien body. Not warm or cold.” It insisted, as if that information was relevant. To him it was, temperature was very important in determining if it was well. This was clearly a human problem, one it needed Victor’s help solving.
Victor considered the knowledge it was giving him, nodding slowly. "In the stomach? Does it feel like an emptiness? Does is... vibrate and make gurgling noises?" It was the best way he could describe it to someone who didn't know what human hunger was. For most everyone else who was humanoid, it was an instinct to know what it was. "I think you're hungry. ...the body is hungry, I suppose is the better way to phrase it."
“Yes yes, like this:” Bud used Julien’s human mouth to perfectly mimic the sound of a stomach growling. It was an instrument he had evolved as a species to excel with. “Hungry… Victor make this sound when hungry? Julien too?”
The notion was strange to it. Hunger was an intense yearning, a fearful, painful thing. The stomach of this man was yearning? But it had no thoughts. How could it eat? “Little bite you, make better? Or big bite, kill Tachonis?”
Victor blinked in surprise at the creature’s flawless mimicry using the human body— not only that, but the human vocal cords. Frankly, he had no idea that was possible. “Yes. Our stomachs are asking for food when they make that noise.”
The question of feeding the body, the way Bud went to its own methods of eating, presented a problem. “That’s not how we eat. To feel Julien, you need to eat human food,” he explained, reaching into his own pack to find some of his rations. He pulled out a pear, a hunk of bread, and some hard cheese. “We’ll have dinner soon, and I’d like you to eat with us then. …but would you like to try now to see what it’s like?”
Bud took a look at the things, pondering them. They didn’t look appetizing, but the smell of them made the stomach make more noises. It seemed Victor was right, Julien’s stomach was yearning for these mismatched objects.
“Okay!” Bud chose the cheese, which seemed the most appealing based on the amount of life it possessed, however small. Then it paralyzed the cheese. Hunt, subdue, kill—the tiniest wisp of blue drained out from the hunk of cheese and fed itself into Julien’s chest. Bud frowned in disappointment. There were barely a couple drops.
The stomach growled, and Bud pouted, turning back to Victor. “Wrong, not food.” Its voice wavered, like it was about to cry. “Help.”
Victor didn't remember what it was like for his younger siblings to learn to eat— that was a part of their life that they didn't spend much time around him or their father. They were two by the time he finally met them. The twins understood the want of food, the gnashing of tiny jaws to get at a chunk of soft, sweet bread. Perhaps he thought it was all instinctual then... or maybe Bud had the wrong instincts.
His eyes followed the small wisp of blue energy, aware that the creature in his friend's body (his friend?) was trying to eat the way it understood eating. And now, he was about to cry. That stung. "No, no not like that. ...I'm sorry if I wasn't clear."
The warlock sat beside him and put down the other food items, holding only the cheese in his hand, since that was what caught the fiend's attention the most. Taking two fingers, he broke off a piece of the cheese and put it into his mouth, deliberately chewing and swallowing it. "That's how humans eat. We don't take energy— we have to break apart the physical object and swallow it."
