Yes. Mello was. He joined it by bringing Rod Ross the head of his greatest rival, possibly in a very literal sense, at the age of 15. In fact, he rose through the ranks so far that even though Rod was nominally the leader, in practice he answered to Mello. Mello was planning to kill Rod's gang once they were no longer useful to his investigation of Kira. That didn't quite go the way he intended.

The concept of Mello, if he does in fact hold any Catholic beliefs due to the amount of religious symbolism surrounding his character, finding out that Shinigami are real and the Death Note exists, essentially shattering his religious beliefs and challenging his entire worldview. He can't even reliably cling to his faith anymore.

Additionally, the concept of this shift breaking down Mello's internalized homophobia and finally giving him enough reason to just say "fuck it" and stop being weird about his weird homoerotic situationship with Matt.
