Mattmello week Day 1: @mattmelloweek
Matt and Mello both had different ways of showing affection.
Ever since they were still in Wammy's Matt has been antisocial and didn't interact with other kids that much. He would stay in his room all day and play video games or read comic books. When he did come out it was for a few reasons, food, schoolwork, or Mello.
At Wammy's Mello also didn't have other friends. Not because he avoided people, most kids didn't put up with his moods and hatred for Near. They would say “He's just smarter than you.”, “He can't control it.” And worst of all “It's not his fault you're dumber.” Mello gave up after that and embraced the fact that Matt was his only friend.
Now, 10 years later it's the same and different.
Matt is still antisocial, but he'll go on walks with Mello, go to the grocery store, maybe to a game store if Mello lets him.
Yet now, Matt has matured. He knows that when talking to Mello he should be focused on him, not staring at a phone or playing with his switch. Matt gives Mello his full attention. Listening to him complain about a dog he saw on an errand or smiling when Mello shows him something. He'll go on the walks, or on the errands if he feels he hasn't spent enough time with Mello that day.
He remembers at 15 years old that he'd listen to Mello practice one of his languages for 2 hours.
Mello still isn't the best at making friends yet he can talk to people normally. Asking someone what they're doing for vacation or making small talk. He doesn't exactly like it, but he understands that making conversation is better than awkward silence.
Mello can't help but think about Matt when he sees a comic book or a specialized controller. He knows that Matt loved these things. Mello ,of course, doesn’t get Matt a console every time he sees one, but he’ll usually get a comic book or manga for him once a week. Sometimes tickets for a movie, like Studio Ghibli Fest.
When Mello was 16 he had brought an Avatar The Last Airbender comic book for Matt. However he chose the wording,
“This is one of your anime things, right?”
Matt replied, “Yeah, yeah, it's a book from a show.” He had decided to spare Mello's pride and tell him he was correct, though he was silently laughing. When Mello asked why he was laughing Matt said it was nothing, just that he was very thankful.
