Growing up in Two, Kane was the son of an abusive Peacekeeper. Most would think that growing up with a Peacekeeper for a father would make Kane obedient but Kane was always defying his father and anyone who tried to claim authority over him.
If it wasnβt for how talented Kane was at the Academy, he would have been kicked out of it long before he was old enough to be selected to Volunteer.
But Kane was talented, everything he tried he was the best at, not only in his class, but all the Academy.Β
Before being in the Games, Kane viewed the Games as fun competition, but he did recognize how biasly unfair the Games are for the outer Districts.
True to Kaneβs defiant nature, when he was fifteen he volunteered for the Sixty-Eighth Hunger Games. He had not been selected to volunteer.
For a long time, Kaneβs feelings about the Games didnβt change. That is until he met Zephyr. Zephyr was a healer and was everything Kane wasnβt. Kind, soft spoken, unconditionally generous. Slowly the two became friends, and with that came Zephyrβs perspective of the world. Eventually, Zephyr opened Kaneβs eyes fully to the twisted cruelty of the Capitol and the Games.Β
This led to Kane getting involved in the Uprising when it came around.
But a new view of the world wasnβt the only thing that came from their friendship. Over years, their friendship blossomed into a deep romantic love for each other.
Zephyr and Kane have been married for fifteen years now.
After about a year of marriage the two men decided they wanted to have a child. The two decided to use a surrogate and a year later their daughter Aura was born.
Aura means everything and more to her two fathers. She is the light of their lives and the three are all very close and do a lot of family activities together.
Out of fear of βwhat ifsβ, Kane and Zephyr decided that Kane would give Aura some training with weapons, self defense, and survival. But itβs nothing compared to if Aura had been enrolled in The Academy in Two.
Kane had been on the stage with all the other Victors from Two when the change of Reaping rules had been announced and their daughter was then Reaped, it had taken everything in him not to lose it and say or do something heβd regret. Aura was thirteen, just a child, and now not only was she going into the Arena, she was going in against Victorβs children and siblings. He needed to find his husband.
Games
The theme for the 68th Gamesβ Arena was Cycling Biomes.
When the Games launched the Arena was a dense deciduous forest.Β
A traditional Cornucopia sat in the middle of a clearing and the Tributes Launched from around the Cornucopia.
The Arena itself didnβt have too many dangerous aspects.
It was the elements that the Tributes needed to worry about.
Each night an hour after The Fallen were shown in the Arena sky, a storm would come. The storm killed any Tributes who were caught in it but also changed the Biome of the Arena.
Day Two was Tundra, Day Three Grassland, Day Four Aquatic, Day Five Jungle Forest, Day Six Grassland, Day Seven Tundra, Day Eight Aquatic, Day Nine Taiga.
The mutts for the Arena were βSpirit Bearβ mutts.
When Kane was in the Arena, he had the most kills out of all the Tributes.

Having stepped away from the main crowd of people in the stable, Kane was trying process what had just occurred. The rebellion was making itself known. He could only hope they had action to follow up on their words, otherwise their message during the Parade wouldnβt do much other than to piss Snow off more.
Looking up Kane saw a pair of eyes on him, Alex. Kane made his way over to the District Twelve Mentor.Β βNever thought I be back in a chariot.β He tried to chuckle.Β βJet did a good job with your outfit.β He tried to avoid the elephant in the room.
Kane didnβt want to get his hopes up, that was dangerous, but seeing the Mockingjay symbol, no matter how briefly, had caused a flutter in his chest. How couldnβt it after Zephyr asking Kane if he thought the rebels would do anything. But Kane knew better than to dwell on those thoughts.
The parade was over and Aura had said goodnight to Kane so she could mingle with the other Tributes in the stables. Kane had been eager to get back to the District Two Floor and his husband.
Kane sat on a chair in front of a vanity, elbows on his knees, hands clasped together, in their bedroom.Β βThis is dangerous.β He murmuredΒ βSnow wonβt let this go unpunished and now the Peacekeepers will be even more on guard than they already were.β
Silence always felt easy with Kane. It never felt loaded, a powder keg waiting for just the slightest spark to set it off, like heβd grown accustomed to in childhood, and later in his line of work. No, it justβ¦was. But that was before. Now, Kaneβs fate hung in the air, taunting Zephyr cruelly every time the air wasnβt filled with anything else. How do you mention it? Do you talk about it at all? How do you ignoreΒ something like this?Β
βYou, ahβ¦β His voice is soft, uncharacteristically small, like if he speaks too loudly something may shatter. He hasnβt been at this point in a long time.Β βYou donβt think theyβll let you die in thereβ¦do you? I mean. They could do something. They have to do something.β He doesnβt dare specify who he means. They both know.
Kane hadnβt been avoiding Zephyr, but he also had not gone in search of his husband after getting off the stage. Kane had come back to his room on the District Two floor at nearly five am. As he stood there in the dark watching his husband sleep, Kane was first overcome with overwhelming sadness at the thought of never seeing his husband again once Kane went in the Arena. Sadness was replaced with anger. Zephyr was the most kind and truly good person Kane knew, he didnβt deserve to lose his husband, and worse yet possibly his daughter too. Aura didnβt deserve this. Kane had moved to press a kiss to his sleeping husbandβs head before he had gotten in the shower.
When he had returned, Zephyr was awake. Kane hated how uncharacteristically small his husbandβs voice is when he speaks. Knowing that he, in part, was causing that. Kane is quiet as he walks over to a window in the room.Β βI donβt know.β He finally spoke, his own voice softer at first.Β βFor none of us to die theyβd have to pull something off before the Launch and I donβt see that happening.β He turned to face ZephyrΒ βIβm not betting on it.β
βShouldnβt I be asking you that?β Ariadne had been very grateful for Kane in her introduction to working with the Games. Knowing he knew her father and the true reasons for her appointment was reassuring so she wasnβt surprised he had come to find her.Β βAre we able to talk? About our new strategies.β
-
The corner of Kaneβs mouth curled up slightly.Β βI can do a lot more to help your situation than you can do to help mine.β He replied honestly. Heβd need Sponsors, something Ariadne could possibly help with, but beside that Kaneβs fate was sealed. Kane genuinely cared for the women but he also needed to help Ariadne so she could help the rebellion.Β βLetβs go up to the District Two floor. Less hidden eyes and ears.β He started towards the elevator down the hall.

βItβs just,β she paused, giving a nod of thanks to the bartender as her own glass was set before her, βIβd think if the whole point of volunteering to return to the arena were to keep the little one safe, well Iβd assume youβd want to be at your peak, no? I mean I would if Iβd been allowed the honor to volunteer again.β She spoke nonchalantly before raising her glass to sip from the golden liquid. βOh yes, simply atrocious,β she agreed though it was clear she didnβt think as such. Interesting, sure. A pity to loose so many fine victors, of course. But atrocious? No, she didnβt think so.Β
-
Kane was generally a patient guy, but given the events of the week and day, his patience for anyone not sickened by the Games was minimal. Kane nearly rolled his eyes.Β βI donβt think one last night of drinks is going to change my performance. Itβs too bad you didnβt have the honor. Iβm sure thereβs a lot of people that would rather you were in there.β He knew he was one. He didnβt want to go in the Arena. He didnβt want Aura in the Arena. This was all wrong.Β Β
Sheβd come for a glass of wine, something to calm the nerves and ward off the sirenβs song that echoed in her mind. Sheβd only just sat down when Kane motioned to her and told the bartender whatever she wanted.Β βOh, uhβ¦ Just a glass of chardonnay.β She smiled politely before turning her attention to her fellow victor.Β βDrinking all nightβ¦ Excellent strategy to get ready for the arena.β Maybe she wasnβt the best people, and maybe she didnβt have the best filter,Β βThe twistβ¦β she made a clicking noise with her tongueΒ βthat blows.β
Maybe he shouldnβt have offered her that drink.Β βI think Iβve earned a night of drinking after the past few days and given my death sentence.β Kane rationalized before drinking the glass the bartender had just brought to his lips.Β βThey both are atrocious.β He spoke maybe a little too candidly but between being on borrowed time and the drinks he had lost count of, Kane didnβt care.Β βAnyone who thinks any less is either a stupid or a psychopath.βΒ
Glowing cigarette between his fingers, Kane rubbed at his temple. βThanks.β He muttered, though he meant it. Sorries didnβt change anything but if Florencia meant it, which Kane believed she did, it was nice to have his doomed fate and his daughterβs potential doomed fate to be acknowledged. Kane finished off his still almost completely full glass before flagging the bartender again. βI canβt stop thinking about my poor husband.β He admitted, slurring his words slightly. βIn the best case scenario, he watches me die in front of our thirteen year old daughter. Worst case scenario, I let them both down and he watches me and our daughter die in high definition. Which Iβm sure the highlights will be played every year.β The neglected ash and ember of his cigarette fell onto his jeans and began to burn them, Kane completely oblivious.

"F-Four A.M.? Yeah... my floor... take me to my floor, thank you..." Annie said shakily as she slowly started to come back to her senses.
She took his hand cautiously and stood up.
"I... I wouldn't mind some water actually." Annie replied, her eyes were downcast as she tried to bring herself up and out of the mental hole she was currently stuck in.
"Thank you Kane... for helping me. Um, how are you handling things?" She asked as she started coming back into the present, her gaze briefly meeting his before they looked down at the floor again.
Kane helped Annie up before glancing around, down the hallway a bit sat a pedestal with a ice tub of glass water bottles. Kane walked down the hall and fetched two before returning to Annieβs side.
Kane was quiet for a moment, casting his gaze aside as well.Β βBest that I can.β He spoke softly before handing Annie one of the water bottles.Β βIβve accepted what I have to do. Accepting that I will leave those I love behind is a harder pill.β He admitted, though not daring to say anything about Aura being left behind as a Victor as he knew Annie wanted her son to come out just as much as he wanted Aura.
Kane couldnβt help the scoffing laugh he let out at Floraβs statement.Β βYeah, you could definitely say that.β Kane thanked the bartender as they returned with the two drinks.Β βThen again, it seems you lucked out this year.β He shrugged before taking a draw from his cigarette.Β
βA moment alone please, all the excitement has gone straight to my head I must admit.β Ariadne was new to the Games community. People were interested in learning all about the newest escort. Up until now she had done her best to smile and play along but the change of rules was too much and sheβd retired to a quiet corridor closing her eyes when she thought she was alone.
βIβll leave you alone if thatβs what you want, kid. I just wanted to make sure you were alright.β Kane was still reeling from having just been forced to volunteer, again, for the Games but true to his nature, he had to make sure the Districtβs new escort was alright when he found her alone.Β
Location: One of the hallways of the Tribute Center in the evening
She froze after the brand new news had broken. She wasn't sure how she made it through the interview with Caesar. Annie held Steven close to her, closer than she ever had before, and squeezed Finnick's hand tightly. By the time they got off stage, she had practically ran off, blacked out and found herself walking through the tribute center.
She knew her husband was probably looking for her but she simply couldn't bear it, she couldn't let their son see her like this.
Annie fell into a heap in the hallway and stared at the end of the hall. She was going someplace else in her mind... a place she had fought hard to get out of. Her husband and her son were both going into the arena. She felt like throwing up but her body was in such a state of shock it didn't even follow through on that.
Then, she heard a voice and her endless stare shifted into a gaze that meant she was present... at least somewhat... though not completely. She briefly looked around, confused as to how she even got there... and where exactly she even was or how long she had even been there.
"W-Where am I? How long have I been here? Am I really here? How did I get here? Where even is... here?" Annie asked the person as she gazed up at them with a lost yet vacant and tearful gaze from her spot on the floor in the long hallway in the tribute center. She was like a lost puppy trapped in an elaborate game.
Kane had been on his way up to the District Two floor to finally try and get some sleep, or at least lay down, when he had spotted a crumpled heap in the hallway. Getting closer Kane could see the red hair of Annie. He was a little wobbly from how much he had drank as he stooped down and spoke softly, not daring touch the women and startle her.
βYouβre in the Tribute Tower, Annie. Iβm not sure how long youβve been here, itβs nearly four am. Why donβt we get you up to your floor?β He offered his hand. Kane didnβt want to think about the fact that Kane and Finnick would be in the Arena together, along with their children, and for that reason, Kane prayed the powers that be that Finnick would be asleep when they went up.Β βOr would you like some water before you try standing up?β
Kane had accepted his fate, he was going to die so that his daughter could live. He knew it would be hard on Aura and Zephyr but the two would get to have each other. So, with that acceptance, Kane figured heβd have a lastΒ βhoorahβ before he needed to cut out the alcohol and cigarettes.Β
Kane was already a couple hours deep into drinking at the Tower bar. Kane flagged down the bartender.Β βAnother one of these.β He pointed at his glass, glowing cigarette between his fingersΒ βAnd whatever they want.β He jerked his chin in the direction of the next person over at the bar.
