Sixième et septième cours de français
I was lazy last week (j'étais paresseux!) and did not do a blog submission! So here are the submissions from this week and last ~ oui.
Leçon Six
We rehearsed speaking our phone numbers and what we do for work this week!
Bonjour!
Some interesting careers included a lady who plants seeds. Madame Chermont said, oh une pépinériste = someone who plants the seeds (un pépins). But she decided that une fleuriste was more accurate a description.
In France they have unusual phrases that incorporate numbers. For example, the police are associated with the number “22″ and “flics” similar to “cops” in english. E.g Vignt-deux, voila les flics!
The police are also called poulle, which also means chicken. Madame De Chermont told us of a friend in france who is a professeur of jeune. She asked the children to draw “poulle”, 2 drew real chickens, 4 drew a policeman and the rest drew packaged chicky from the supermarket. Good grief. Apparently there is only 1 farm in the whole of Paris for the school children to visit.
Another example is “Être sur sont 31″ which refers to wearing something formal. It literally asks you to to dress for the 31st (of December).
In France, when the doctor listens to you breathing they will say “Dites 33″, say 33. Apparently saying trente-trois helps the doctor hear the chest more clearly.
My favourite is haut comme trois pommes. It is a phrased used for “when I was young”. It translates literally to “the size of three apples”.
The counting system in france is v unusual. It comes from the times when they used to trade francs in bags of twenty.
We then marked our devoirs! It is really time for me to learn what a verb is in English so that I can learn them in French. Good grief.
The fancy table above is so helpful! It describes “avoir” to have. J’ai, Tu as, Il/Elle a, Nous avons, Vous avez, Elles/Ills sont <zzz sound.
I did all my homework for the first time ^0^ I am chuffed.
Seven Sept
We are learning more about describing our “co-ordonée” - all the things to get in touch, our details.
Today madame De Chermont said, “I am in a cotton” because she has a head cold. It was the cutest.
She also said “it is quite disturbing” when trying to learn the french style of counting, but we are to keep it up!
Mon teléphone fixe. My home phone number.
We practiced learning the numbers a lot this week. Everyone called out a phone number and we wrote them down in english. Eloise and I were the best at it. We are nerds.
“Qui a le numéro de portable?” What is your mobile number?
We learned a few more bit and pieces about offering phone numbers. In France there are 5 districts, and they all start with a different two numbers (as in Australia (07), (02) (03) etc.
We also learned @ = arobase. - = tiret and _ = tiret bas. (which is useful when offering your email). Often the french emails end in .fr. Oh and hotmail is pron ‘otmail and gmail is pron: jaymail. of course!
We also began learning how to say what we like and do not like! What I have and what I do not have. The negatives, ooh la la.
We practised saying the things we like and do not like with our partner. Pour example, J’aime la musique! J’aime la natation! J’aime regarder main pas jouer. I enjoy swimming! I enjoy watching but prefer playing.
We examined more closely the Verbe de 1er <premier> groupe.
After, we completed exercises in our booklets which raised questions around schooling. Here is how the schooling grades work in France:
You are not a “étudiante” until university! Terminale is the last year of high school. Its as if they count the years backwards! unusual!
Voila! I love my french lessons. Oui oui.
Leçon de française cinq
We received some more tips from Catherine today in regards to french resources online!
http://sites.arte.tv/karambolage/fr <<< a TV show called Karambolage, where they explain how to pronounce french words to german people. She said it may be useful for us to learn the sounds slowly, although none of it is English. But we must immerse ourselves in French nonetheless according to Madame Catherine!
http://www.francetvinfo.fr/ <<< watch the news in French! There is also a way to turn the subtitles on in the videos.
https://www.lawlessfrench.com/ << teaches french to english speaking people ^-^ It is a blog by a lady.
http://www.culturepub.fr/ Culture Pub analyses advertising all across the world. A great one for graphic designers to watch ^-^
She also suggested we watch some SBS online movies. She gave us a list of funny ones to watch. I’m not sure they will be to my taste, but here they are nonetheless:
1. OSS 17 - comparable to james bond and Austin Powers
2. Astrénx et Obélix ~ four movies in this series.
3. Perfect Date (l’amour, c’est mieux à deux!)
4. Amacoeur
5. Bienvenue chez les chtis! (Welcome to the sticks).
Catherine also discovered how to say you are undergoing a PhD en française:
Je suis doctorant(e) en design. ^0^
- - -
Other than that today was mostly revision.
For homework we have to learn how to say our phone number!!! Eeek. In France, they say the numbers two by two. E.g. ph: 31-31-20-00. If you say it three by three like we do, it doesn’t make sense.
The map of Paris!!! The map is a snail. People often say they live Rive guache or Rive droite, to the left or the right of the bank.
Leçon de français #4
Catherine was back this week ^-^ What a treat. I like that she tells us the little tricks in French. She is very ready to deconstruct, rather than just hope we pick it up ^-^
The focus of yesterday’s french lesson was careers and nationality.
C’est ridicule! C’est un scandale! Catherine told us that the train near her house was out of service, without any warning or sign. I said, how do you say “that’s ridiculous. She told us about “C’est ridicule!” but, she said the french love to exaggerate, so really it would be C’est un scandale. She said often in France, you are not “trés bien” you are “trés trés trés bien!” I like that. I enjoy a good exaggeration.
Again, we learned more about the formal and informal. I am more inclined to memorise the formal, because I don’t want to offend anyone.
“Arche de Noé” - Noah’s Arc. She was telling us again about names that are different in Australia and France.
She told us of her sisters Frédérique and Laurence. The names exist in the masculine form too, but are spelt differently. In France, Patrice is a boys name, so it always astounds her when she meets a lady from Australia with such a name.
The varying ways the French refer to genders, according to age. “Fille” and Garçon” for children, Jeune Fille and Jeune homme for teenagers (she wasn’t sure why it translates to “young girl” and “young man”. Why not young woman and young man? And then Femme and Homme for adults.
We also discussed the culture around business cards otherwise known as “visitors cards” or “une carte de visite” in Française. In France, most people carry a card with them that has their name, number and address. These are often given out even when you just meet friends. ^-^ I think its sweet. I must remember this if I travel to france.
Catherine wasn’t sure how to say that I am doing a PhD in france. She said she will let me know. She said I should just say I am a designer. Which translates to “designer”. The same thing.
We haven’t learned numbers yet! But we learned “ème” which is similar to “2nd” and “5th” in English. The only number that doesn’t end in ème is 1, which is première.
I’ve already done my homework! I did it in class! Sometimes I wonder if I could just teach my self french, but there really is opportunity in the classes to speak out loud and discuss uncertainties. I am considering becoming a member for the book hire. hehe.
I’ve already done my homework! Devoirs. Voila!
Leçon #3 en Française
This lesson we had a visitor! Her name was Virgine. Qu'elle se appelait Virgine!
^-^ I forgot to reflect on the day. but here is the upload. Mostly the lesson felt like revision. But I did find Virgine spoke most of the lesson in french which was very fancy.
