Two Megalosaurus, two hundred years apart. Graphite drawing on paper, 23x30.5cm. One is a reconstruction from the 1820s, when the dinosaur was first described: a massive, quadrupedal reptile—the fearsome ‘elephantine lizard,’ as Charles Dickens called it. The other, reflecting accumulated scientific data and informed conjecture, is a modern reconstruction: a bird-like, bipedal predator with the agility and grace of a living animal. Both are beautiful in their own ways, and I love them both.
