Last week I watched a professional esports tournament broadcast.

The production was immaculate. Multiple camera angles, real-time data overlays showing player statistics, heat maps of in-game positioning, expert analysts breaking down tactical decisions between rounds. The commentary was sharp, the pacing was tight, and the technical execution was flawless.

It was, frankly, better produced than most traditional sports broadcasts I watch.

And yet esports still gets dismissed in a lot of sports media circles as somehow not "real" sport. Which is increasingly difficult to defend when you actually look at the infrastructure behind it.

Modern esports organisations employ performance coaches, sports psychologists, nutritionists, and physiotherapists. Teams analyse opponent data with the same rigour as an AFL or NRL coaching staff. Players follow structured training regimes, recovery protocols, and sleep schedules specifically designed around performance.

The technology underpinning competitive esports is extraordinary. Real-time biometric monitoring during matches. AI-powered opponent analysis tools. Custom-built hardware optimised down to millisecond response times. Venue infrastructure that would rival any modern sporting stadium.

This is not a niche hobby that got lucky. This is a serious, sophisticated, technologically advanced industry — and it deserves to be covered as one.

Here is a sentence from an actual sports technology product listing, lightly paraphrased to avoid calling anyone out specifically:

"Harness the power of advanced biomechanical algorithms to unlock your true athletic potential through precision-engineered performance data ecosystems."

I have genuinely no idea what that means. And I work in this space.

Sports technology marketing has a serious problem: it's written by people who are very excited about technology, for people who are primarily excited about sport. The overlap in that Venn diagram is smaller than the industry seems to think.

Real athletes — weekend golfers, recreational runners, casual gamers — don't want to know about your algorithms. They want to know three things: Will this make me better? Is it easy to use? Is it worth the money?

That's it. That's the whole brief.

The best sports tech products I've used are the ones that answer those three questions immediately and clearly. The worst ones make you feel like you need an engineering degree to understand what you've just bought.

This is part of why independent, plain-language coverage of sports technology matters. Marketing copy is written to sell. Reviews should be written to inform.

Running watches have become remarkably sophisticated. Heart rate monitoring, GPS tracking, VO2 max estimates, recovery suggestions, sleep analysis — the modern running watch knows more about your body than most people are comfortable admitting.

But which ones are actually worth it?

I spent six weeks running with three different GPS watches — a budget option, a mid-range option, and a premium option — to find out whether the price difference translates to a meaningful difference in usefulness.

Here's what I found.

The budget watch did the basics well. GPS accuracy was solid, heart rate monitoring was reasonable, and the battery life was genuinely impressive. For someone just starting out with data-driven training, it would serve them well.

The mid-range watch added training load analysis and recovery time suggestions. These features sound gimmicky until you actually use them — having the watch tell you "you need 38 hours before your next hard effort" is surprisingly useful when you're the kind of person who would otherwise just run hard again the next day because you felt okay.

The premium watch was a different league entirely. The GPS accuracy was noticeably better, particularly in areas with tree coverage. The training analysis was more nuanced. The interface was faster and more intuitive. But — and this is important — the actual running data it gave me wasn't dramatically different to the mid-range option.

My verdict: unless you're a serious competitive runner, the mid-range option hits the sweet spot. The premium watches are genuinely excellent, but you're paying a significant premium for refinements rather than fundamentally better information.

Walk into any golf shop in Australia right now and you'll find an entire wall of rangefinders. Laser. GPS. Hybrid. Prices ranging from a hundred bucks to nearly a thousand. All of them promising to take strokes off your game.

But do they actually work?

The honest answer is: it depends — and not on the rangefinder. What the research consistently shows is that knowing your exact yardage doesn't automatically make you a better golfer. What it does is eliminate one specific source of error: distance miscalculation. If you were already misjudging distances by 20 metres and hitting the wrong club as a result, a rangefinder will help you. If your misses are about swing mechanics, course management, or nerves — it won't move the needle much at all.

For higher handicap golfers, the benefit tends to be more psychological than statistical. Knowing you've got 143 metres to the pin — not "roughly 140 or maybe 150" — gives you something concrete to work with. It removes guesswork. And removing guesswork tends to lead to more committed swings, which tends to lead to better contact.

For lower handicap players, the gains are more measurable. Precise yardages allow for better club selection, better course management, and more intentional shot shaping.

So should you buy one? If you're serious about improving and you don't already have one — yes, probably. Just don't expect it to fix your slice.

Most of what's out there falls into one of two camps. There's the breathless gear review that reads like a press release, full of superlatives and suspiciously light on criticism. Or there's the deeply technical analysis that assumes you have a biomechanics degree and about six hours to spare.

Neither is particularly useful if you're a real athlete trying to make a real decision about real gear.
