How do you think Sheith will end up confessing their feelings in canon (likely not to happen, but IF it did).
Shiro and Keith are in the throes of the final battle against the Galra Empire. The rift is open and the only way to close it is from the inside. The catch is that the person who shuts it can never return. In short, they will die there. One life for the rest of eternity. It seems fair enough.
Keith is the closest to it. Heās also the fastest, so while floating in open space across from Shiro, he looks the man in the eye and volunteers himself. Shiroās jaw becomes steel, and he tells Keith no, but Keith gestures around them, at the carnage and growing body count. Keith clenches his teeth, and with rare tears bubbling behind his helmetās visor, he stands his ground. He tells Shiro heās going. It has to be him.
For some reason, he feels like heās always known it would be.
āKeith,ā Shiro says, his warning in the tone. āI told you this isnāt how we do things.ā
Keith clears his throat, but his anger response subsides. His features soften, and a corner of his mouth hooks upward. He smiles. He actually has the nerve to smile. āAnd I told you as many times as it takes.ā
Shiro stops short. āDonāt make this about me. Keith, this isnāt about me āā
āWhen hasnāt it been about you?ā Keith looks over his shoulder at the rift. Through the comm they can hear the explosions and shouts. āDonāt blame yourself for this, Shiro. This is my decision. Iām going in there, and you wonāt stop me. You canāt.ā
Shiro attempts to jet-pack toward him, but Pidgeās scream tears through his helmet. She needs him. Shiro can tell sheās panicked, maybe even dying. Keith hears it too and clears his throat.
āI love you,ā Keith says, and it resonates like a lifted burden. āNow go lead Voltron.ā
Thereās a short pause on Shiroās end. He swallows the thick accumulation in his throat, also fighting tears because he has always seen the world in Keith, but now Keith is going to be devoured to save a universe that barely had the chance to know him.
āI love you,ā Shiro finally answers, firm and brave in the face of the greatest fear heās ever known. āI have for a very long time.ā
āDonāt make it sound painful,ā Keith jokes, already floating toward the opening. He chokes on a sob but turns it into an unfinished laugh. āLoving you was the easiest part of my life.ā
