Alex has always been a relatively happy child, if anything a bit blind to the realities of his home life. He’s grown up thinking he was adopted into the Diggory family when in reality his father had had an affair with his mother, a muggle women, and in an effort to cover it up both him and his brother along with the rest of the Wizarding World were told he was adopted. Growing up in the Diggory household had its challenges. His mother was always especially distant towards him and sometimes he thinks his father doesn’t even want to look at him. His brother though? His brother is amazing and more than makes up for all that. Alex has never once in his life doubted that his brother cares about and loves him, not in the way he doubted it from his parents. Unaware of the reason for the distance Alex can only fill in the blanks with what he knows and he just excuses it away as him being adopted. It’s not like his parents are cruel towards him, he just can’t help but feel like neither of them had really wanted him. It was almost like they viewed him as a responsibility to take on more than anything. He used to lay awake at night and fantasize about his real parents and what they would be like. He knew nothing about them, not even their names. It would have bothered him a lot more had it not been for his brother.
His brother who, despite not being his real brother, didn’t treat him any differently. Growing up Amos was more than just Alex’s brother, he was Alex’s best friend too. What attention he lacked from their parents Amos more than made up for. When some of his friends with older siblings were being kicked out of their bedrooms Amos never shut the door in his face and Alex took great advantage of that, constantly following him around, trying to be just like him. His brother was the coolest person alive and Alex wanted to be cool too! When Amos started Hogwarts Alex learned for the first time what real loneliness felt like and he hated it. Having been unaware of just how much Amos had shielded from him it was a massive shock to be alone with his parents. His parents who, Alex learned quickly nothing was ever good enough for. Try as he might he could never live up to their expectations the way Amos seemed to so easily. By the time he got his letter Alex had already given up trying. School years: Alex was far from the top of his class, always seeming to do just enough to coast by and not get in trouble. It’s not that he wasn’t smart, he was very smart in fact, but he just didn’t try. Not like he should, if he tried at anything it was to not do well. His parents distance, Amos shielding him from the worst of their behavior, and his own lack of ambition created a terrible mix and most of his potential has been wasted because of it. His grades aren’t important to him, why would they be? He valued his friendships way more and he would drop out of his classes entirely if it meant he got to keep people around him. He wasn’t as clingy towards his brother as he had been as a child but that didn’t mean he wasn’t still just as desperate for any interaction as he was as a young child. He’s absolutely terrified of the idea of being alone it’s quite honestly the only reason he chose to continue his education further. It was what all of his friends were doing so it was the only option Alex had to keep them around, to keep himself around them. It's why he didn't pick a specific subject, it didn't matter because he wasn't going to try, just like how he spent all of his schooling so far he would do just enough to get by and nothing more. He had more important ways of spending his time.
