I used to celebrate the 4th of July every year, not really ever questioning its significance. I’d sport the red, the white and the blue and used it as a great reason to get really drunk and extremely high. I was living in a world with a very selfish goal looking through a very tiny lense. Nothing was more important to me than getting loaded. When I got sober, the first thing I did was begin to examine my values, and how I could take more action in the things I cared about and believed in. When I took a look inside myself it became prevalent that I’d been ignorant to the privilege the color of my skin carries. It was then that my lense widened, and my value for justice surfaced. The astronomical evidence of racial injustice that continues to happen everyday in this country disgusts me and I have decided that I will no longer celebrate the freedom of this country when it was built on slavery.
