You were born with a silver spoon and rose colored glasses and you have never known anything else. Your parents love story was a great one, and you love to hear him tell it. The youngest of seven, you don’t know what it is to be alone and you idolize and adore each of them individually. You are their jewel, the perfect gem to finish the set, and they all guard you fiercely lest you see the cruelty and destruction of their world. Princesa, he calls you, and gives you everything you could possibly want. They don’t let you in on the darkness, they don’t let you peel back the curtains or lift up the rocks to see the ugliness of life. And you have never wanted to. 

Loyalty is etched into your marrow by your father, as it was for all of your siblings. They were shown harsher consequences, you only notice the lack - how the disloyal seem to vanish into thin air. You never question it. Why should you? Your rose colored idealism is too easy, your life is too comfortable, why should you ask who has paid the price for your luxury. 

Change comes swiftly and with a heavy hand. Your father is dead, your mother follows her love to the grave in a matter of weeks. For the first time you know what it feels like to be alone. She was yours and his only, your siblings belong to themselves and each other and the cartel. You are drifting, but you stand in front of your siblings and recite that poem she loved with a face made for sorrow. You are still listless, and they all see your light beginning to fade. Your brother suggests NY, they are all planning to head there soon, why not start school there and start fresh? 

And so you go, and for the first time you are alone, the only Rosales out from the shadows of your siblings. (But you aren’t truly alone, they wouldn’t let you go unguarded). You try your hand at a number of things before finding yourself in the art world of the city. It is so full of life, joy, love and all those things you’ve longed for that you throw yourself in fully. You find friends, a found family who knows and loves you for you, and not a family name or blood and power. 

Your family joins you, and you’re thrilled to have everyone around you again. You’ve grown, will they save you’ve changed? Perhaps you’re older and wiser, more likely just given a degree of freedom not available at home. You graduate, and they all celebrate you. An internship, and that existential angst that comes from the end of childhood and venture into the unknown. They want you to grow up, and you want them to see how grown you already are. Can you look darkness in the eye and not lose yourself with in it?
